Television Mystery Series… What to Start With?

April 24, 2016

Sometimes you just don’t feel like curling up with a book, and want to do something that will be take a bit less time to finish. Other people are more visually oriented, and really appreciate the extra “immersion” that can be provided with a visual medium like television. In all of these cases, watching a TV series can often be the best way to really have one of your favorite Cozy series come to life!

However I know that the TV and Movies page on my site (listing all of the Cozy TV and Movie series that I’m personally familiar with) is a bit overwhelming as it is just a list and not really a “review” per se. So I thought it might be helpful to discuss some of the best television mystery series to start with if you are a Cozy Mystery fan. These are three of what I consider the best television mystery series, and I strongly recommend each of them.

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes [Blu-ray] The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (starring Jeremy Brett)

It’s always hard to determine if Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes is Cozy or not… by the standards of the time he might not have qualified, but by modern standards his mysteries certainly qualify as Cozy to me! While Sherlock Holmes has been played by a number of talented actors (Ellie Norwood, Clive Brook, Raymond Massey, Basil Rathbone, and Benedict Cumberbatch, to name a few), my personal favorite and the one I feel holds up the best to modern audiences while retaining the character the best is the Granada Television series starring Jeremy Brett.

Note that the next two series also starring Jeremy Brett (The Return of Sherlock Holmes and The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes) as well as the multiple movies made by Brett are also excellent – but I’m mostly recommending The Adventures because it is the first chronologically made and is probably the best introduction. (Unfortunately Jeremy Brett was quite ill during the filming of the final TV series, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, and it shows a little. So I would not recommend it quite as highly as the rest of Brett’s duration as Sherlock Holmes unless you have already seen the rest of his work.) (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is available in disc format on Netflix.)

Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Definitive Collection [DVD] Agatha Christie’s Poirot (starring David Suchet)

As with other entries on this list, there have been several actors to portray Agatha Christie‘s Hercule Poirot, but for me the “true” Poirot will always be David Suchet. To me, he perfectly portrays the fussy Belgian detective. Though these wouldn’t have been considered period pieces when they were written by Christie, the TV series is – as it was made in the last twenty years, not the 1920s-1970s when Christie was writing.

Personally I most recommend the earlier seasons >>> all those with Hugh Fraser as Arthur Hastings, Poirot’s honest and brave but not necessarily incredibly clever friend and assistant. I especially enjoyed the earlier seasons that had Pauline Moran as Miss (Felicity) Lemon. The later seasons do all have their high moments but the earlier material was all absolutely brilliant. The box set I linked above, which includes all the full-length made-for-TV-movies is also quite excellent. (Agatha Christie’s Poirot is available in disc format and streaming on Netflix and on Acorn.)

Brother Cadfael (starring Derek Jacobi)

The Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters is an excellent historically set Cozy Mystery series set in war-torn medieval England. As with the other period pieces on this list (and there are a lot as I am a real fan of England’s various architectural movements through the ages) this series uses the setting to full potential. Sets and costumes are all top notch, with a strong feeling of “immersion” in every episode as a result. (Brother Cadfael is available in disc format on Netflix and on Acorn.)

These are just three of my personal favorites… so if you’ve got others that you feel are really great to start with if you are a Cozy Mystery fan, be sure to give examples in the comments. Thank you!

Realtor Sleuths in Cozy Mysteries

April 22, 2016

home8A while ago, Terri asked me to post a Realtor themed entry:

… Could you do a list of cozies with professions of Realtors (as this series is) or Real Estate Appraisers (“Appraisal for Murder” by Elaine Orr, series Jolie Gentil Cozy Mysteries)- or maybe a combined list? Kathleen Delaney’s “Ellen McKenzie mysteries” would also fit. …

I keep a list of possible themes which I try to add to whenever I start the posting process for a new-to-the-site author, so I already had the theme going. So, the realtor sleuth theme now will join some of the many themes I have on my site such as Librarians Sleuths in Cozies, Culinary Cozies with Recipes, Cozies with Cats, etc.

Realtor Sleuths in Cozy Mysteries:

Jenna Bennett (aka Jennie Bentley & Bente Gallagher): Savannah Martin Mystery Series – Savannah is a divorced Southern Belle who is a realtor in Nashville, Tennessee.

Catherine Bruns: Cindy York Mystery Series

Ann Charles: Deadwood Humorous Mystery Series – Violet “Spooky” Parker, is a single mom of twins who wears purple cowboy books and is a real estate agent in a little town called Deadwood (South Dakota). Violet has a tendency to sell haunted houses, so watch out!

Cheryl Crane: Nikki Harper Mystery Series – Nikki is a celebrity realtor in Hollywood.

Vicki Doudera: Darby Farr Mystery Series – Darby is a realtor on an island off of Maine’s coast.

Charlaine Harris: Aurora Teagarden Mystery Series – At the beginning of the series, Aurora (Roe) is a librarian. She later becomes a real estate agent in Georgia.

Traci Tyne Hilton: Mitzy Neuhaus Mystery Series – Mitzy is a top-selling realtor in Portland, Oregon. (These are billed as “cozy Christian” mysteries.)

Nancy Lynn Jarvis : Regan McHenry Real Estate Mystery Series – Regan is a realtor/sleuth and her husband Tom is an ex-computer programmer, in Santa Cruz, California.

Barbara Lee: Chesapeake Bay Mystery Series

Tierney McClellan (aka Barbara Taylor McCafferty & Taylor McCafferty) : Schuyler Ridgway Mystery Series – Schuyler is a realtor in Louisville, Kentucky.

Elaine Orr: Jolie Gentil Mystery Series – Jolie is a real estate appraiser in an east coast beach town called Ocean Alley, in New Jersey.

Maggie Sefton: Kate Doyle Mystery Series – Kate is a divorced realtor in a Colorado college town. (Well, actually there is only one book in this series.)

Nina Wright: Whiskey Mattimoe Mystery Series – Whiskey, a widow, works as a realtor in a resort town in Michigan. Abra is her Afghan Hound.

If you’re interested in finding other themes of Cozy Mystery series, I have lots and lots of themes on the Cozies by Themes page of my Cozy-Mystery site.

By the way, if you know of any other Cozy Mystery Realtor Sleuths, please post a comment. Thank you!

Who Would You Cast In This Cozy Mystery Movie?

April 20, 2016

We’ve gotten a few comments recently that got me to thinking, Who would I cast?

KG:

… I think Lucy Stone Mysteries would be a great movie series on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel. I wonder who could be cast as Lucy?

Esmeralda:

Maybe just me, but doesn’t Gladdy look/remind anyone of Beatrice Arthur ?

Lucky for me I wrote both of these comments down! Now I’d like to know if any of you have someone in mind who could play the following parts:

Beth Kennedy from Laura Alden‘s (aka Laurie Cass) PTA Mystery Series
Kellie Martin

Meg Langslow from Donna Andrews‘ Meg Langslow Mystery Series
Melissa McCarthy

Mrs. Jeffries from Emily Brightwell‘s Mrs. Jeffries Mystery Series
Kathy Bates
Roma Downey
Cheryl Ladd
Angela Lansbury
Susan Sarandon
Emma Thompson

Theodosia Browning from Laura Childs‘ Tea Shop Mystery Series
Andi MacDowell
Lea Thompson

Desiree Shapiro from Selma Eichler’s Desiree Shapiro Mystery Series
Melissa McCarthy

Stephanie Plum from Janet Evanovich‘s Stephanie Plum Mystery Series
Martha Plimpton

Kinsey Millhone from Sue Grafton‘s Kinsey Millhone Mystery Series
Sandra Bullock
Jennifer Garner
Anne Hathaway
Martha Plimpton

Gladdy Gold from Rita Lakin‘s Gladdy Gold Mystery Series
Bea Arthur

Lucy Stone from Leslie Meier’s Lucy Stone Mystery Series
Lacy Chabert
Patricia Heaton
Kellie Martin
Martha Plimpton
Lea Thompson

Sharon McCone from Marcia Muller‘s Sharon McCone Mystery Series
Martha Plimpton

Faith Fairchild from Katherine Hall Page‘s Faith Fairchild Mystery Series
Jennifer Aniston
Alyson Hannigan

Remember that actresses wear wigs all of the time, although in the case of a new mystery movie series, the blonde actress isn’t wearing a curly, red wig which so many of us had expected her to wear. One actress that always comes to my mind when I read a mystery book with a strong sleuth is Martha Plimpton. Ever since I saw her in a movie way back in 1994, I’ve thought of her as the perfect Kinsey Millhone, Joanna Brady, or Stephanie Plum. As for Gladdy Gold, I totally agree with Esmerlada. I think Bea Arthur would have made a delightful and strong Gladdy Gold.

How about you? Can you imagine who you would cast as these sleuths? If you have any ideas, please post a comment. Thank you!

Isis Crawford: A Mystery with Recipes Mystery Series

April 18, 2016

A Catered Murder (A Mystery With Recipes Book 1) I have been surveying some of the Cozy Mystery series that are most frequently recommended in our monthly recommendations, and next on my list is Isis Crawford’s Mystery with Recipes Series. Isis Crawford is somewhat of a veteran writer of Cozy Mysteries. As Barbara Block, she wrote the Robin Light Mysteries which included ten books published between 1994 and 2007.

The Mystery with Recipes Series began with A Catered Murder, published in 2003 and is now up to book sixteen which will be published in a few months (2016). As the name of the series suggests, these books fit squarely within the culinary cozy mystery theme, mysteries with recipes, that is so popular in the Cozy Mystery genre.

Set in Longely, New York, a town that is about a $200 cab ride from New York’s Kennedy Airport, the mysteries involve two sisters, Bernie and Libby Simmons as the sleuths. A Catered Murder begins with Bernie arriving at the family home/bakery/cafe early in the morning after taking such a cab ride. Bernie arrives with no luggage or cash after having flown from Los Angeles following a discovery that her long-time live in boyfriend has been cheating on her with one of her best friends. Bernie left literally everything behind.

Libby, Bernie’s older sister, has been running the cafe and catering business “A Little Taste of Heaven” while also taking care of their wheelchair-bound father who lives in the family’s quarters above the shop. Bernie arrives on the same day as Libby is catering the local high school’s reunion. So Bernie is immediately put to work helping. Yikes! At the reunion dinner, someone dies and the mystery begins!

Libby wants to help find the murderer both because the death occurred during her catering event, but more importantly, because one of her best friends, Tiffany, is accused of the killing. Bernie and Libby’s father, Sean, is the former chief of police of Longely. Luckily, he still has contacts that can help them try to solve the murder even though he is on the “outs” with the current chief of police.

Bernie has a nearly photographic memory. She is always annoying Libby with her encyclopedic knowledge on trivia related to food (or just about anything!) Libby, who is also suffering from a long-ago failed romance, is more the steady matronly type who took over the business of running the shop after their mother died.

Libby and Bernie are somewhat of a rarity in the Cozy Mystery genre in that they both provide substantial contributions to the sleuthing. In A Catered Murder it would be difficult to say which of the two sisters is the primary sleuth. To me, the relationship of the sisters is one of the most attractive parts of the book. The relationship is nicely drawn as complicated with some sparks and disagreements, but it obviously is still based on deep sisterly affection. (Love that!)

There’s a reason Isis Crawford’s Mystery with Recipe series has been recommended by other Cozy Mystery readers. It’s a series that keeps on delivering, a series that is full of characters who will draw you in and make Longely, NY  and the “A Little Taste of Heaven” shop a comfortable and inviting place to which to return.

As an added bonus (for Cozy Mystery readers like me >>> who love holiday themed Cozy Mystery books, Isis Crawford sets a lot of her Cozies during holidays (Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, and even the Fourth of July!) She has written so many holiday themed Cozies that she is on the “Holiday Theme Mystery Authors …” page on my site. This page features Cozy authors who set a lot of their books during the holidays.)

P.S. If want to read some of the other entries about highly recommended Cozy Mystery series, you can see them on the Most Recommended Cozy Mystery Series page on my site.
