Cozy Reader Questions

September 24, 2020

It’s been a few months, so I’m trying to keep more on top of reader questions than I have been. There are still quite a few outstanding questions, though.

From R…

I’m looking for a fiction or mystery book where an older married couple are on a trip(might be a food tour). But they’re in Europe somewhere & I THINK someone gets sick. Every chapter or two though is a different narrator(ie. her POV and then his POV).

I believe that the woman’s name is Caroline/Carolyn but I can’t remember her husband’s name.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read it & I’d like to try and find it again.
Thanks

EDIT: Julie, Susan, and Suzy have posted in that this sounds like the Culinary Food Writer Mystery Series by author Nancy Fairbanks. R confirmed that this is the mystery they were thinking of.

From Gayle….

I’m looking for a series I lost track off….woman has a law firm, married to a man who maybe works for a government agency, they have a plane, and she gets involved in solving crimes. The series has been around for a while.

EDIT: Terry and Marja suggested that this could be the Sharon McCone Mystery Series by Marcia Muller.

From Judithe…

I am trying to find a mystery series about a woman lawyer who comes to work with her father. Not the Sujata Massey series. American or maybe British?

EDIT: Annie and Marja both suggest this could be the Barbara Holloway Mystery Series by Kate Wilhelm.

From Joan…

Hi, I “lost” an author, as in I cannot remember her name or titles of her books. The main character arrives in a small seaside village in England(?) having left her former life behind. She decides to open a shop. She meets a local woman who befriends her and a cheese farmer/producer with whom she thinks she could have a relationship. There are murders and mysteries to be solved. Help?

EDIT: Laura suggested that this might be the Scarlet Cove Seaside Systery Series, written by Agatha Frost and Evelyn Amber.

From Tom…

At least 20 years ago a woman -AUTHOR – who lived in Mequon wrote a fictional murder mystery based in Milwaukee’s Washington Heights neighborhood and Washington Park. Young school aged girls were involved in story and I believe solved mystery.

Can anyone help with authors name or title, please?

EDIT: Sharon suggested this might be Whistling in the Dark by Lesley Kagan.

From Lex…

Hi, I have been looking all over and can’t remember a series I have read. The main character is a female detective (maybe a PI) who lives in Cambridge MA on or around Brattle Street in a carriage house.

EDIT: Ellen suggested that this might be the Carlotta Carlyle Mystery Series by Linda Barnes. Marcia thinks it could be the Museum Mystery Series by Sheila Connolly. Ginger thinks it might be the Dog Lover’s Mystery Series by Susan Conant. Marja thinks this could be the Sunny Randall Mystery Series by Robert B. Parker. Lex eventually figured it out – it was Patricia Cornwell‘s Kay Scarpetta Mystery Series.

From Bobbie…

I am looking for a series that takes place in Florida with a young man that is a half brother or illegitimate son of a wealthy boat owner or maker. He has a friend or grandfather that he associates with. It’s a mystery series. I think his name was Chase or Chance. It is not the Saving Chase series.

EDIT: And a late question from Marja…

Now I know this isn’t a Cozy per se, but I have read 2 or 3 books about a Baltimore [possibly Atlanta] female police officer who makes detective at the end of the first book. Because she patrolled a poorer quarter of town, she has connections with many of the people there. She lives out of town in a small country house with a big yard for her two Border Collies [and for awhile they even had some sheep to herd] and has a boyfriend who is a fairly senior detective. Her father, also a cop, committed suicide in this house, in the office, and she has made that space into a judo [?] training room for herself and [I think she has a student or two, or a teacher]? The author’s first name is something like Mary Jo … I’d love to read another but I can’t remember a title of the books or the author’s name! Boy is that frustrating bc as you can see I remember a lot of other stuff from books! ;^D

EDIT: Tad thinks this might be the Detective Sarah Alt Mystery Series by Trudy Nan Boyce. Marja confirmed that this is what she was looking for!

Thank you in advance to anyone who answers! As I get possible answers, I’ll post them with the question…

Cozy Mystery Series with Very Many Books vs. Cozy Mystery Series with Just a Few…

August 21, 2018

MJ recently wrote me about a very interesting question, which I think makes a terrific blog topic. It’s something that probably a lot of us have wondered about while we made our way through rather long Cozy Mystery series.

MJ:

I have been pondering another question. Do cozy readers like a really long series from an author? OR do they prefer shorter (perhaps 6 to 10 books) and more of a variety from an author?

I ask this because I find that I’ve gotten bored with some of the longer series. I’ve stopped reading ****. ****, and ****. Now I can’t say that about every author. I still like Katherine Hall Page and Susan Wittig Albert and their 20+ book (Coyle at 18) series.

I was thinking about this as I was reading Connolly’s new series. She has her Orchard series (11 books) and it looks like she isn’t writing any more in the Museum Mysteries (7 books). Also, the County Cork series and that ‘Dead’ series. In other words she likes more variety, as do many other authors (McKinlay, Bartlett/Barrett, Gerber/Aames, Flower, Logan, Minichino, et al to name just a few).

Maybe it’s a dumb question…………..I was just curious.

MJ, this is definitely not a “dumb question”! I have wondered about this also. A lot of the time, when a favorite author of mine continues writing and writing more and more Cozies in a series, I find that I sort of start feeling like I need a change, and wonder why they don’t. This has happened several times. It almost feels like sometimes the author is simply “phoning it in”. Let’s face it, there are a lot of Cozy Mystery authors out there today, and to me, some long-running series tend to morph into too-long-running series.

What about you? Do you prefer it when your favorite authors keep each of their Cozy Mystery series shorter (as MJ mentions 6 to 10 books)(or even shorter) or when your favorite authors concentrate on just one very long series? Please post a comment below. Thank you!

Name That Cozy – March 2018 Edition

March 22, 2018

One of the most frequent questions I get is “what Cozy is this from?” And while I like to think that I can help more often than not, I just haven’t read anything… so that’s when I fall back on asking you, the site readers!

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these posts, so this time I’ve got a whole bunch of them. Five, in fact. So without any further ado…

From Cindy C:

I’m looking for a series featuring an English peer who is the 4th richest man in England or the world. I believe his name is Alex. His parents were murdered on a boat when he was about 7 and he inherited all their money. He has a faithful butler and a policeman friend who help him solve mysteries and later in the series he has a little boy, also named Alex.

UPDATE: Judith (and several others, including Laura and Diane) suggested that this is probably Ted Bell’s Alex Hawke series, which starts with Hawke. Looking at the description, I’m pretty confident that it’s the book Cindy is looking for!

From Diane:

I read a mystery some time ago and really enjoyed it. It was set in Milwaukee and dealt with the Arabian carpet trade. I learned so much about those wonderful carpets, but to save my life I can’t remember the author/title. Any ideas?

Thanks

UPDATE: Susan* suggested that this could be The Bloody Bokhara by William Campbell Gault. It seems like it fits somewhat, though the descriptions I’ve found have unfortunately been very short so it’s hard to tell…

From Paula R:

I’m trying to locate a book series I read long ago. The books were purchased from a Christian bookstore. It was written by a man who was a medical doctor and the books were based in Michigan cities, mostly in the Upper Peninsula.

UPDATE: Sandra suggested this might be the Prescription for Trouble series by Richard L. Mabry, which starts with Code Blue.

UPDATE 2: Cindy suggested another possible answer, the works of Harry Kraus, another medical doctor. His main series is the Claire McCall series, which starts with All I’ll Ever Need.

From Betsy:

Looking for a book about two white arabian horses. Thriller, mystery, romance about a woman and her musical daughter. Her former lover shows up to protect her and fight the bad guys. Of course, they rekindle their relationship after a tryst in the barn and it turns out he is the girls father. Running through the story are the two white arabian horses. Can’t remember the title or author.

From Sheila:

I’m looking for a mystery about a woman who hits her sisters abusive husband, they press charges, she goes to prison. When she gets out she leads bird enthusiasts in central park.

UPDATE: Judy S suggested that this is probably Little Night, by Luanne Rice. Looking at the synopsis, it seems to match the description well.

So, if you think you’ve got the answer to either of these stumpers, please let us know in the comments below! Thank you!
