Cozy Mystery Book Recommendations – January 2016

January 29, 2016

This month, I’m going to start out the Cozy Mystery Recommendations by telling you about my favorite Cozy Mystery book that I read during January. As I have mentioned many times before, I try several new-to-me authors in between reading a Cozy by one of my favorite authors. I’m always on the look-out for new authors to add to my favorites list, and this time, I found one!

The Cozy Mystery I tried, and enjoyed a lot, is Plantation Shudders by Ellen Byron. A few days ago, Kimmie wrote some rather glowing comments about this Cozy right here in one of the comments:

LOVED the setting, cast of characters and the family dynamics. This is a place I would absolutely visit!! With all of the descriptive visuals, I was sucked in and felt like I was watching the whole story from the comfort of my comfy couch on the front porch!? (Not to mention, it left me salivating over the delicious dishes referenced throughout the book!!)

Kimmie, I couldn’t have said it better! Plantation Shudders is the first in the new Cajun Country Mystery Series (by Ellen Byron) and it is set between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, which after visiting a few times, I will say is almost like a country within itself. (I can’t think of anywhere else that has its own unique flavor!)

Maggie (short of “Magnolia” >>> which may well be pretty common in Cajun country!) comes from two very respected families in the area. She lives/works at the bed and breakfast that was formerly the plantation on her father’s side of the family. She also works as a guide at the plantation her mother’s side of the family had to bequeath to the state because of financial reasons. Her family’s B&B is finally starting to recover from the devastation brought on my Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately >>> enter Murder!

I enjoyed all of the characters in the book, both the “regulars” as well as those who were in the book as guests at the B&B >>> who I am guessing won’t reappear. I especially enjoyed Maggie’s interaction with Xander, the Autistic son of one of the “regulars”, and I am hoping he continues to inhabit this Cozy series. (Also, Gopher, the family Basset Hound is too darling!)

The plot, characters, unique setting, small town feeling, mystery, and writing style are all things that I enjoyed, and I find myself looking forward to the release of the second Cozy in this series. Oh, and for those of you who enjoy your Cozies with recipes, there are some pretty appetizing looking recipes included as well!

So now it’s your turn! Would you please tell us about the really good Cozy Mysteries you read during January, and please tell us why you liked them so much. These should be the Cozies you thought were better than the other Cozies you read during the month. This way, the rest of us will be able to read your recommendations/comments, and put those authors on our Cozy Mystery radar. Please list the Cozies you liked the most at the very top of the list.

As usual, please do not tell us about the Cozy Mysteries you did not like.

What really good Cozy Mystery book did you read during January 2016 that you want the rest of us to know about, and why did you enjoy it?

Upcoming Television Mystery Movies for February 2016

January 26, 2016

The Turner Classic Movies channel will be presenting their yearly “31 Days of Oscar” programming during February 2016. Because of this, I thought there wouldn’t be too many mystery movies this month, however I am pleasantly surprised by how many will be shown. Also, as most of you have probably noticed, the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel show the same mystery television shows over and over (Murder, She Wrote, Hart to Hart, Diagnosis Murder, Matlock, & Columbo). For this reason, I’ve decided not to list them during their “regular” time slots. Probably by now, most of you who watch this channel know exactly when these shows air! I’m just going to be listing these shows’ special marathons. As usual, I’ll be showing the mystery movies that the channel airs. Hopefully, this will help make the list more manageable.

Cozy Mystery News – January 2016

January 24, 2016

Cozy Mystery NewsEvery once in a while I have Cozy Mystery news that I simply cannot keep to myself. Of course, I share it with my husband, but that almost doesn’t count. (I usually get a “That’s nice.” type of response from him…) I have a feeling that some of you all will be happier about some of these Cozy Mystery tidbits than my husband was!

If you’re all caught up with Allyson K. Abbott‘s Mack’s Bar Mystery Series, you can look forward to at least three more books in that series. And, as if Allyson K. Abbott’s news isn’t great enough, her “AKA” Annelise Ryan has gotten the go-ahead for at least three more Mattie Winston Mystery Series books! That’s double the terrific news for this talented author and her fans.

Good news for fans of Juliet Blackwell‘s Haunted Home Renovations Mystery Series. She is scheduled to bring us a 7th book in that series.

Here’s super good news for Cajun Country Mystery Series fans: Ellen Byron has the green light to release books 3 & 4 in that very Cozy New Orleans series. (I told you it was good news!)

And, for those of you who are fans of Jane K. Cleland‘s Josie Prescott Antiques mysteries AND fans of audiobooks: her Ornaments of Death (Christmas theme) is already in audio format, and three more of her mysteries are set to be made audible as well (Deadly Threads, Lethal Treasure, & Blood Rubies).

I know there are a lot of Amanda Flower fans out there. Well, you will probably be over-joyed to find out that she will be writing a new Amish-themed Cozy Mystery series: the Amish Sweetshop Mystery Series. The sleuth is a chocolatier who visits her Amish grandparents in Ohio, and stays for a longer amount of time than she had expected. (No spoilers here!)

OK, so I know everyone who reads Cozy Mysteries has heard about Carolyn Hart. Her Death on Demand series is going strong, and she will be bringing us a new one. Carolyn Hart is also scheduled to bring us a new Bailey Ruth Ghost Mystery. (How about that for good Cozy Mystery news?)

Calling all D.E. Ireland fans! Remember, Ireland is a duo of authors. One of them (Sharon Pisacreta) will write the new Berry Basket Mystery Series using the Sharon Farrow moniker. The Berry Basket series will take place near Lake Michigan and will feature a berry shop owner.

Also, Laura Levine‘s Jaine Austen Mystery Series fans will be happy to see that she will be writing at least three more mysteries after this year’s release in June. Great news!

Jess Lourey (of the Murder by the Month series) will be starting the new Witch Hunt Mystery Series, which she will be writing as Jessica Lourey. (This is a non Cozy series.)

OK, now this is great news for the Margaret Maron fans amongst us. She will be be bringing back Sigrid Harald. Sigrid is a New York City homicide detective, and she hasn’t been around for us to read about since 1995.

Those of you who follow Marcia Muller‘s San Francisco private eye, Sharon McCone, rest assured that there will be more mysteries in that series. She has just gotten the OK for at least two more.

If you’re a fan of Carol J. Perry‘s Witch City Mystery Series, you’ll be pleased to know that she will be releasing three more Cozies in this series. Pretty exciting!

Hank Phillippi Ryan has gotten a contract for two more Jane Ryland mysteries. I know some of you who will be absolutely delighted by this news!

Well, as I said, I just couldn’t keep these great Cozy Mystery tidbits to myself. I hope some of you are as pleased by some of these new-sy announcements as I am!

P.S. Any time you hear something that you think might interest the rest of us, please post a comment or drop me a note. I must warn you though, I’m not good at keeping secrets. Thanks!
