Thank you, Danna! I just added 9 books to my library requests. I’m hoping more will show up later because so many of these are new series, which I’m looking forward to. I was really surprised at how many of the books already had more than 20 requests so early! I’m in a lull right now because I’ve read just about all the new cozies they’ve got.
That made me very glad to have sprung for a NOOK version of the Nell Sweeney series – 6 books for one low price. I remember somebody here recommending them, so I read a sample and snapped it up. I love history and mystery, so it’s a great choice.

You’re welcome, Deb. You must be following nine very popular authors from this list. At my library, they get so many copies of really popular authors, it seems to not take much time to finally get a book with a long list. Hope you have the same type of library…

The newest Alice Kimberly was released in Jan. Amazon is currently out of stock. She released the new one under the Cleo Coyle name. That said, I have unfortunately had trouble getting my hands on this book in my local bookstores. I was very surprised by that, considering the switch to Coyle, I thought that would make it a shoe in for the stores to have it prominently displayed. I like this series more then the coffeehouse series and can’t wait to read the latest installment…if I could only find it!!

Supposedly Alice Alfonsi and Marc Cerasini (Cleo Coyle) will tell you the reason for the delay of Ghost and the Bogus Bookseller if you subscribe to the newsletter on their website:

          coffeehousemystery.com.

They answer this to a question regarding it on the message board (icon on the left). BUT they don’t state why on the website, emphasizing the necessity of subscribing to the newsletter.

However if you click on the ‘haunted mystery’ icon (left side of site) and then scroll down, they state it will be released ‘later’ this year (emphasizing ‘LATER’). Also, the cover of this book on their website and at Amazon shows the author to be Cleo Coyle and NOT Alice Kimberly.

Well that would explain why I can’t find it…this is the second time they have delayed this book’s release. When they first announced it they had a fall 2011 release date for it. Someone should really clue Amazon in to the changes since they still have the old info on it. Thanks for the heads up on this MJ.

Danna, Wunderbar !!! New books to look for. I was happy to see Kerry Greenwood and Kate Ellis have new releases in my favorite series. I am reading “Believing the Lie” by Elizabeth George. It is very slow reading and very long, 608 pages. Truthfully I find it rather dull because she has too much detail. What do your other readers think?

Regina, when you said you were going to do some light reading, and Elizabeth George was your choice for that “light” reading, I was sort of surprised. I used to look forward to all of her books, but, she does seem very detail-oriented. I prefer my mysteries to be a little shorter than 608 pages >>> What am I saying?!? I prefer my mysteries to be about a third that long!

I love long books! I’m reading Elizabeth George again, and I’ve found Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series, which I love. I also like Anne Perry’s Charlotte and Thomas Pitt books, though not the Inspector Monk series. But I do like the Mr. Monk series by Lee Goldberg, even if they’re not very long!
The Nell Sweeney collection I have now is like reading a nice long book – it’s 6 books in one, so I’m reading them all in a row.
I much prefer a series book to a standalone because I can get really immersed in the characters and setting – just like reading a nice long book.

Deb, you are so right>>> everyone has his/her own choice. I wish I didn’t get so impatient with long books. I used to read long mysteries, but now I just find myself saying “Come on… Let’s get this going…” too many times during beautifully written descriptions.

Danna, that reminded me of a couple of “long book” stories. One was a historical novel I read in high school. I couldn’t figure out what happened to a prominent character, and it turned out she died in the middle of an extremely long descriptive paragraph that I skipped!
The other was when my father was reading the novel Hawaii, by James Michener, who couldn’t write a short book. I asked my Dad where he was in the book, which covered the entire history of the islands from their formation out of the ocean through the orginal Polynesian settlement all the way up to the 1950s. His reply? “She just died.”

Re: your high school historical novel >>> That’ll teach you to read every word! (Sort of why I don’t like extremely long books… You can never know when to just skim through sections…)

Deb, I am kind of strange about the length of a book. I am as of now reading M.C. Beaton’s “Death of a Kingfisher, A Hamish Macbeth Mystery.” I absolutely am in love with Hamish and I would dearly love for this book to go on and on. I hate these stories to end. I have so many favorite authors that I hate to get to the end of a book! But I also want books to get over so that I can get on to the next book.
I guess sometimes we just aren’t satisfied, are we?

P.S. I read on the inside back cover of this book that the BBC had a TV series with Hamish Macbeth!!!! I didn’t know that!!! So I looked that up on the internet last night and low and behold, there was Hamish! Looks just like I thought he would! Oh how I would love to be able to see this TV series. I did see these were available for purchase.
I sure do wish the BBCA would put some of these TV series on so we could watch them here in the good ole US of A. I want to watch ENGLISH TV on an ENGLISH TV channel. I have plenty of USA channels to watch American TV. The BBCA sure misses their calling here on this.

Linda, I have seen the Hamish Macbeth mystery shows, and while I did like them, they were quite different than M. C. Beaton’s Hamish Macbeth mystery books. Also, I like the actor who played Hamish, but he didn’t look at all like what I had envisioned, and he didn’t come off as such a big oaf. I think a lot of people underestimate Hamish (in the books) because they think he’s a simpleton… and are quite surprised when he continuously solves the mysteries.

(It’s funny how we all come away from series with different ideas of what we think the characters look like.)

Danna, What I like the most about Hamish Macbeth is that he has all he wants in life and he really doesn’t want anything else. He is very happy and content with his life just the way it is. How often do we ever get to meet someone like that? How many of us are like that? Not too many in fiction and very few in real life. Hamish just wants to be able to do the job that he has been given to do. I think Hamish is a very honorable, responsible person. He loves the area of Scotland that he has been given to police. He is very loyal to those people that also live in his area and he will do anything he can to see that “his” people have justice. All he asks is to be let alone to do his job.
I know that sometimes his story tries to make us believe he is a lazy oaf but he really isn’t . I love this new character that was introduced in “Death of a Kingfisher.” I hope Dick Fraser is around for a long time. I think he makes a perfect sidekick for Hamish.
I hate it when TV producers rewrite a book! Wouldn’t you like to know what goes on in some of these people’s heads! Why mess with something that is so good!!

Personally I always start with the first book in the series that interests me…and that’s not always the debut novel. One time I tried to be good, and started with the first Sam Adams book by Sarah Shankman. It is a wonderful series, but it changed radically in direction and characters in the third book, and I very nearly didn’t bother with the third book because I wasn’t wildly impressed by the first two.

Julia, good point! It’s sort of like the television show
          Star Trek: the Next Generation:

If we had started watching the show in the first season, there is a chance we wouldn’t have continued watching it for long. It took the show a season (at least!) before it hit its stride. We went back and watched the first season (eventually) but we were pretty surprised at how bad some of the shows were…

Since the February release is a hardcover, it’s quite probable that the June release date is for the paperback.
It’s quite usual for that to be released much later.

I am so please to see the new entry in the Gregor Demarkian Mystery series by Jane Haddam will soon be out.
Some people don’t consider these mysteries “cozies” but I do because they deal so much with human relations and give interesting sidelights into the home lives of an evolving ethnic group.
In the early books there was so much written about Armenian foods that I was prompted to contact an Armenian church that helped me obtain a cookbook published by the ladies’ auxiliary.

Hi, Melissa B! I always look forward to the monthly mystery book new releases, also. Of course, I especially like it when one of the authors I follow has a new book amongst all of the rest.

I discovered “cozy” mysteries last year when my husband gave me a Kindle for Valentine’s Day. Until then I read regular mysteries, adventure novels and sci-fi. Then I happened to download a cozy mystery because the cover looked interesting and have been hooked ever since. I’m a divorce attorney and needed fun, light reading and these are just the ticket. As a dog lover I started with Susan Conant and Donna Ball and moved on to the crafts series (especially scrapbooking), the culinary series (Cleo Coyle, Avery Aames), etc.
Your website has been a great help in finding additional authors. Thank you so much for your effort. Keep up the good work!

Welcome to the site, Humberta. We have talked about the different types of Cozy Mystery book covers, and how they catch our eyes and affect us differently.

I definitely think divorce attorneys would need “fun, light reading”!!!

Thanks, Nita R! Thanks for telling us about the free Kindle e-book Hollywood Scandals, which is the first of Gemma Halliday’s Hollywood Headlines Mystery Series. The even better news is that all three of the Hollywood Headlines mysteries in that series have been bundled for the Kindle, and cost only $0.99.
