The latest mystery of Katharine Schellman’s Lily Adler Regency mystery series: A Scandal in Mayfair. Lily now has a reputation of being able to discretely investigate and provide resolution for those desperate hoping for answers, and this book once again gives her the chance to grow in that role. I like the way Lily manages to gather facts from both the best and worst parts of London society, all in the course of helping her clients and bringing justice to the vulnerable. Characters are not one-dimensional and different friends of Lily step up at various points in the book–and help show Lily’s emotional growth.

I was thrilled that Darcy Hannah’s new series A Fatal Feast at Bramsford Manor had some characters from another series. Looking forward to the next one in this series.
I read French Quarter Fright Night by Ellen Byron. Great New Orleans vibes with a lot of humor. The Art of Murder by Sarah Osborne had Ditie and her family and friends visiting Quebec. The book reminded me of my visits to Quebec City and Montreal.
Claws of Death by Cathy Wiley is about judging food contests. I met the author at the Shiremanstown Cozy Fete, but had read some short stories in the Death in the Mountains, Air, Beach anthologies.

The three books I recommend that I read this month are The Briar’s Club by Kate Quinn, The Cat of Yule Cottage by Lili Hayward and The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter.
~ The Briar Club is set in 1950 Washington DC during the McCarthy era. Very well written, it’s an absorbing story. The characterizations of the residents of a boarding house are very well done. Really unexpected twist near the end.
~The Cat of Yule Cottage is such a good book! Set in Cornwall. it’s of winter, clannish villagers, isolation and magic. Of there is a very special black tomcat who is attached to the cottage and a standing stone nearby. Perfect for this time of year!
~ The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year was an absolute delight to read! It channels Agatha Christie and a locked room mystery with a really tender romance. Very well written!

I just finished Tamar Myers new cozy The Mermaid Mystery, very different from her Penn Dutch, set in South Carolina. It was fun.

A Christmas Party by Georgette Heyer. Country house murder in a locked room with a host of people who had a motive.

I just finished reading “The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection. It is by Alexander McCall Smith. It is book 13 of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which takes place in Botswana. He is able to relate the feelings of the people of Botswana in a warm, comfortable way. It is all very interesting how Mma Ramotswe resolves her cases. All the characters are very fun to read about.
(My next book will be a Maisie Dobbs mystery, “A Dangerous Place”, by Jacqueline Winspear.
