Four New-to-the-Site Mystery Authors: Tessa Arlen: Lady Montfort, Kathleen Bridge: Hamptons Home & Garden, Nancy Haddock: Silver Six, Julie Moffett: Lexi Carmichael

September 15, 2015

As most of you know, I receive letters/notes from Cozy Mystery readers who tell me about mystery authors who they think definitely belong on the Cozy Mystery site. Well, I have finally posted four of your recommended authors from my rather long list. I think all of they’re books look like they’re going to be fun Cozy Mystery reads!
Tessa Arlen    The daughter of a British diplomat, Tessa Arlen spent part of her childhood in exotic locations such as Singapore, Beijing, and Cairo, before being sent back to a boarding school in England. She now lives in Washington state. Her novels are still firmly set in England, however, with her first mystery series, the Lady Montfort Mystery Series, being set in Edwardian England.

Kathleen Bridge     Kathleen Bridge writes the Hampton Home & Gardens Mystery Series, which features a former Home & Gardens writer solving crime in the Hamptons region of New York. Meg Barrett owns the Cottages by the Shore which is an interior design business.

Nancy Haddock    Nancy Haddock has lived in Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida, and is the author of the Silver Six Mystery Series starring a set of six retired housemates in fictional Lilyvale, Arkansas. She also writes paranormal vampire romances. Haddock is an ex-speech pathologist and high school teacher.

Julie Moffett    Julie Moffett has spent significant time overseas, including attending a Japanese high school (due to her father being in the military), a backpacking trip through Europe, and a college graduate study in Warsaw, Poland. She’s also had an interesting career since finishing her studies, spending time as a research adviser for a defense contractor and as a journalist, making good use of her education in topics like Political Science, International Affairs, and Russian Language. Her main mystery series is the Lexi Carmichael Mystery Series. Lexi is a technician at the NSA. Also, Moffett has written numerous romance novels, most set in Scotland.

Four (Five?) New-to-the-Site Cozy Mystery Authors: Ellen Byron: Cajun Country, Susannah Hardy: Greek to Me, Sadie Hartwell: Tangled Web, A.L. Herbert: Mahalia Watkins Soul Food, & Carlene O’Neil: Cypress Cove

August 17, 2015

I just added four new Cozy Mystery authors, or should I say five? As you will see when you read this entry, one of the Cozy Mystery authors writes under two names. (Would that be four people, five authors?!?) These are all authors who Cozy Mystery readers have recommended as belonging on the Cozy Mystery site. Thank you!

Ellen Byron   Though a relative newcomer to writing Cozy Mysteries, Ellen Byron is a long-time television writer finally trying her hand at longer fiction. With writing credits on shows like Wings, Just Shoot Me!, and Still Standing, she brings veteran talent to her Cozy Mystery series, the Cajun Country Mystery Series.

Susannah Hardy (aka Sadie Hartwell)   A graduate of St. Lawrence University in New York, Susannah Hardy has spent significant time in the New York/New England area, including growing up in upstate New York and currently living in Connecticut. She writes the Greek to Me Mystery Series, starring restaurant manager Georgie Nikolopatos, and (under the pseudonym Sadie Hartwell) the Tangled Web Mystery Series, starring yarn store manager Josie Blair.

A.L. Herbert   Growing up in scenic Maryland, it’s no surprise that A.L. Herbert chose to set a mystery series in beautiful Prince George’s County, Maryland – the Mahalia Watkins Soul Food Mystery Series. Halia owns the Mahalia Sweet Tea Restaurant, which keeps her busy >>> especially since she has a taste for sleuthing!

Carlene O’Neil   A native of the Northern California Wine Country, Carlene O’Neil writes about the land she loves and knows best >>> so it’s natural that her series, the Cypress Cove Mystery Series, is set in Cypress Cove in the heart of California wine country. The series stars Penny Lively, former photojournalist now running her family winery after inheriting it from her aunt. Before becoming a Cozy Mystery author, O’Neil was a television writer.

Karen Anne Golden: The Cats that ….. Mystery Series, Liesa Malik: Daisy Arthur Mystery Series, Marta Perry: Lots of Amish Cozy Series, & Mary Stewart: Stand Alones

July 18, 2015

I have been meaning to add these four Cozy Mystery authors for a while, and finally, I have got their pages up!

Karen Anne Golden grew up in a small town in Indiana, and spends much of her free time hard at work restoring her dream-house – a Victorian era house built at the end of the 19th century. She also adopts stray cats – all experiences that are reflected in her Cozy Mystery works. Her Cozy series is The Cats That… Mystery Series, starring Katherine “Katz” Kendall, a former computer professional who suddenly inherits a pink Victorian mansion (and fortune) in Erie, Indiana.

Liesa Malik    A current resident of Colorado, Liesa Malik has lived in a number of other interesting places as diverse as Texas, England, Florida, and Michigan. She has worked for a variety of newspapers throughout her career, and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from the University of Florida as well as an Art degree. Her Cozy Mystery series (titled the Daisy Arthur Mystery Series) stars a retired special education teacher now beginning a second career as a romance novel author.

Marta Perry    Perry grew up in Pennsylvania, where she was first exposed to the culture that she would later come to write about, the Amish communities of Pennsylvania. She has an interesting spin on her series, in that many of them are set more around communities, with each individual book having a different character who serves as a protagonist. Her Dark series revolves around the town of Deer Run, while her Watcher in the Dark Series is set in Laurel Run. Her Three Sisters Inn series takes a slightly different approach, revolving instead around three sisters, with each book written about each. (Perry also writes Amish series that are not mysteries.)

Mary Stewart was a British novelist and one of the most popular authors of the “romantic mystery” genre of her time. She graduated with honors from Durham University with a degree in English, but her education was derailed by World War II before she would eventually go on to earn her master’s degree. Most of her novels in the mystery genre are stand-alone novels. Some of the most successful works were The Moon-Spinners, which was adapted into a Disney movie, and Madam, Will You Talk?, her first work.

Amanda Carmack, Arthur Conan Doyle, Shamini Flint, and Linda Rodriguez – Four Author Additions to the Cozy Mystery Site

May 16, 2015

I’ve just added four more authors to the Cozy Mystery site. Most authors I add are decided by recommendations from Cozy Mystery readers who have enjoyed their works – though Arthur Conan Doyle obviously needed no recommendation! (The main reason I haven’t added him before this is because his works have been published so many ways that I had trouble deciding how to organize them…)

Amanda Carmack writes the Elizabethan Mystery Series. As the title implies, this mystery series revolves around Queen Elizabeth I (who is still Princess Elizabeth in the early novels), though the detective is Elizabeth’s private musician, Kate Haywood. She also writes romance novels as Amanda McCabe and Laurel McKee.

Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes mysteries helped bring the early criminal detective fiction to the mainstream, with so much popularity that even after Doyle killed off the character, he eventually brought Holmes back after a ten year hiatus due to continued demand. As well as being a pioneer of the early detective fiction genre, Doyle was a humanitarian and doctor, earning two knighthoods for his volunteer medical work. He was even something of a detective himself – he helped clear the names of two wrongly accused men, and the results of one of these cases was partially responsible for the formation of the English Court of Criminal Appeal.

Shamini Flint might have begun her writing career with children’s book series like the Sasha Series and the Diary Series, but she’s also the author of the Inspector Singh Investigates Mystery Series. This series stars a Singaporean inspector whose slightly awkward nature often makes people underestimate his keen detective instincts. Originally a lawyer, Flint now works two jobs – full time mom and author!

Linda Rodriguez worked at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, as an administrator – which is also where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She put this experience to good use when writing the Skeet Bannion Mystery Series, starring Marquitta “Skeet” Bannion, a former Kansas City police officer who decided to get away from the big city to serve as the campus chief of police at a college in a small town.
