Mickey Spillane Wanna Be Sleuth in Mystery Series

July 21, 2012

Linda wrote a couple of months ago asking help is finding this author and/or mystery series:

“…  I too have an author that I can’t remember and I liked the stories so much that I thought I would remember easily, but guess what? I can’t remember. The main sleuth was hit in the head some how and woke up thinking he was a “gumshoe”. He kept talking like he was a character in a Mickey Spillane murder mystery. Anyone got any ideas. This series would have come out, I would say, in the last 3 to 5 years. The guy was funny. He couldn’t remember any other parts of his life. He didn’t even know his own mother.”

Again, if you think you might know who the author of this series is, or the name of the mystery series, please post a comment. Thanks!

Late 1800s or Early 1900s San Francisco Female Attorney Sleuth in Mystery Series

July 20, 2012

Last month, Fran wrote and asked for help finding the following author and/or mystery book series:

“A while back I read a couple of books that I’d like to find again. The books were set in San Francisco and were in the late 1800s or early 1900. The main character was a woman who had trained as an attorney and was trying to make it in the male dominated world of law – against her parents’ wishes.

Can you help?
Fran”

If you think you might know who the author of this series is, or the name of the mystery series, please post a comment. Thank you!

Mystery Books with Men as Sleuths – Male Amateur Sleuths, That Is

July 13, 2012

There is one place that I can name where “Equal rights for women.” has been taken very seriously, and that is in the amateur sleuth mystery book realm. Let’s face it, men simply are a very tiny, itsy-bitsy minority in the amateur sleuth world!

I have received several letters from people asking that I include this theme. The latest letter is from Carla:

“I was wondering if you could add another theme to your list.  It is very hard to find cozy mysteries with male protagonists.   It seems that mysteries with male detectives seem to be more procedurals and have a harder edge.  I prefer cozy mysteries with amateur detectives.”

Newspaper Woman Who Returns Home When Dad Dies…

May 21, 2012

This is the fourth letter/comment from a Cozy Mystery reader who is trying to identify a particular author. Before my endless lists, I had that problem a lot!

Deborah writes:

“Hi – I am trying to remember the name of an author – here is what I remember about the books – Main character was in the newspaper business (I think) in a large city in CA (San Francisco, I think) and when her dad died in a small town in Northern CA  she went home to take care of things. I think her dad owned the local paper and she ended up keeping it open – solving some mysteries – meeting up with her high school boyfriend, the local attorney who was her dad’s friend – and deciding to live there again. I remember a story involving a good friend from high school and a big fire (arson, I think). Does this sound familiar to anyone? Would appreciate any suggestions on how to find this series. Thanks.”

This does not sound familiar to me, but maybe one of you know who Deborah is trying “to find”. Please post a comment if you do. Thank you!
