Anyone With a Tip?

December 13, 2018

I have a Cozy Mystery-reading friend who makes a felt ornament for each of her children every year. This inspired me to try making a few holiday-inspired doo-dads.

However, and that’s a very big “however”, for the past two and a half years my husband and I have had an issue with any little thing hitting the ground. You see, that’s the time when we adopted our little puppy – Cocoa. We love her dearly HOWEVER she has a huge problem: any time anything that doesn’t belong on the floor hits the rug, she has it in her mouth, runs away from us, and then swallows it.

Luckily for us, our neighborhood has an emergency veterinary hospital – which we have had to take Cocoa to – three times. It’s not bad when she gets ahold of a napkin, or a sock, but it’s things like part of a mechanical pencil or a small rubber gasket that require a veterinarian’s care.

Getting back to my crafting… I came up with an ideal solution for my “Cocoa-small-objects” (like felt ornaments) problem: I now keep all the little sequins, beads, needles, and felt pieces in a large aluminum roasting pan. I keep that right on my lap just in case I drop anything while crafting. I can’t believe how well it works!

Do you have any solutions to problems you would like to share? If so, please post a comment below. Thank you!

Finally! One of My Very Favorite Authors is Kindle-ized!

December 4, 2018

Just a quick note…

Those of you who have been with me for a while may remember how much I like Patricia Moyes.  I had just found out about her wonderful Henry Tibbett Mystery Series when I decided to start reading all of my books on a Kindle. I quickly became spoiled by being able to adjust the font of my books. I hadn’t read the entire series, but since I “knew” Henry Tibbett would soon be Kindle-ized, I gave Goodwill all of my paperbacks. Hmmm… Who would have guessed that it would take years and years for  the Patricia Moyes series would finally be released in e-book format!

Anyway, just yesterday I found out the first eleven Henry Tibbett’s are now available in Kindle format. It took me about one minute to order the next one, and then I decided to order the first one as well so I can write a blog entry about it. I’ll be posting that soon – although I am currently spending my reading time on holiday Cozies.

(I was going to just post a quick note to let you know about the first eleven Henry Tibbett mysteries being Kindle-ized, but got a little carried away.)

P.S. By the way, even though Henry Tibbett is a Scotland Yard inspector, I find this series to be very Cozy…

A Guilty Pleasure…

October 12, 2018

I know! I know! I should spend more time reading my beloved Cozy Mysteries! However, every October (for the last several years) I have looked forward to spending time watching seasonal non-mystery shows on TV.

As I have mentioned before (a nice way to say “complained about” before…) we don’t have the four seasons here in San Antonio. I have missed fall and winter ever since we moved here. It’s either hot and muggy, or cool down here. (This is the main reason I am so devoted to cold-weather holiday Cozies.)

So, every year at this time, I anticipate watching some of my favorite Food Network shows. That’s right, I have made no pretense about enjoying cooking/baking but I get a vicarious enjoyment out of watching other people performing those tasks.

Here are some Food Network channel holiday show I think you may enjoy:

1) Halloween Baking Championship: I have particularly enjoyed the last two seasons of this show because the host (John Henson from “Talk Soup”) and the three judges (Carla Hall, Lorraine Pascale, and Zac Young) seem to get along so well, often playing off of each other. The show has two competitive baking rounds, with someone being eliminated after the second. These competitors can bake!

2) Halloween Wars: This show is quite different than the previous in that it features teams consisting of a sugar specialist, a cake decorator, and a pumpkin carver. Like the previous show, there are two rounds. The teams are “artificially” put together so they aren’t made up of friends. It can sometimes get pretty brutal between the competitors. Still, it is absolutely amazing to watch what they create.

Not to worry, once Halloween is over, I then start watching the holiday themed (ie Christmas etc.) competitions.

3) Holiday Baking Championship: This Christmas-themed baking competition is also played in two rounds. The judges are Duff Goldman (from “Ace of Cakes”), Lorraine Pascale (gorgeous model/cook), and Nancy Fuller (from “Farmhouse Rules”). These three judges are absolutely terrific together! If you haven’t already seen this show, you will be amazed at the winter holiday creations the bakers make!

4) Christmas Cookie Challenge: I’m not sure if this show will be on again this year, but I already have it on my Tivo favorites list – just in case. It features bakers who specialize in cookie-baking, so it isn’t as professional seeming as the previous baking competitions. A real bright spot it had going for it last year is that Ree Drummond (“Pioneer Woman”) was one of the judges.

5) Chopped-holiday editions: I’ve already discussed Chopped before, but my husband and I especially enjoy the shows that feature Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas themes.

That about wraps up my winter holiday cooking/baking shows. Oh, and let me mention one more holiday show: The Spring Baking Championship. Bring on the Easter bunnies!

How about you? Are there any holiday shows you look forward to watching (other than the Hallmark movies)? Please leave a comment below. Thank you!

PS: Both Halloween Baking Championship and Halloween Wars began recently. However you may be able to catch the earlier episodes – as the Food Network re-airs them several times.

I Enjoy Culinary Cozies Except When I’m Dieting…

April 8, 2018

Yikes! Some of the culinary-themed Cozy Mysteries I read are trying very hard to throw me off the dieting wagon!

My husband and I put on a “little” weight over the holidays – as we usually do. Every year we vow we won’t “let that happen again” >>> but every year, it does.

Some of you may be thinking “How much weight can they possibly gain over ‘the holidays’? Let’s face it, ‘the holidays’ means two or three weeks…”

Not so for us! “The holidays” start some time in October for us. Yep! We look at Halloween as the beginning of “the holiday” season. About as soon as the stores start putting up their Halloween treats (well, not really >>> since that now means early September!) we start making excuses to buy our favorite treats. Unfortunately, we have different preferences which means we have to buy two treats instead of just one. This doesn’t mean we only partake of our individual prefered treats…

So, we are now trying to shed those unwanted pounds from “the holidays”. Right now I am trying to (sort of) avoid reading culinary Cozies. As much as I enjoy reading how Goldy Bear (Diane Mott Davidson) plans on catering her next big event or what type of cookies Hannah Swensen (Joanne Fluke) has put in her gift cookie bags >>> I am just going to have to remain strong >>> at least for now.

How about you? >>> Do you find yourself trying to avoid Cozy mysteries with a strong food-related theme just because they make it hard for you to stick to your diet?
