Here we are in the sweltering days of summer! Every once in a while it’s just good to kick back, lie on your sofa, drink a cold beverage, and watch a mystery movie in the coolness of your air conditioned home. (Anyway, it’s sweltering down here in San Antonio, and it’s great to take a little time to enjoy a good, old, black and white mystery movie in a consistently cool room.)
This month, I am including the entire Masterpiece Mystery! schedule. It begins tonight (I know, short notice!) and will run all the way through November, ending with dramatization of P.D. James’ Death Comes to Pemberley Mystery!
I have gone through my TCM Now Playing guide, and have come up with these mystery movies that will be airing during July 2014 on the Turner Classic Channel.
This month marks the 100th anniversary of WWI (July 1914 – November 1918), so there are many WWI movies airing during the month. Also, I want to point out that there are several movies based on Agatha Christie’s mystery novels that will be airing during July 2014. And for all of you Nancy Drew fans (and let’s face it, many of us came to Cozy Mysteries through the Nancy Drew portal!) there will be four Nancy Drew movies sprinkled through the July 2014 mystery movie line-up.
If any of you know of a good mystery movie that will be airing during July on another channel, please post a comment. We’d all love to know about it. Thank you!

Pamela Frost Dennis says
Looks like I have some DVR programming to do. Loved the original “The LadyKillers”. I also enjoyed the 2004 version with Tom Hanks.
Thank you this list!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Pamela, I have my DVR device already set up to tape the mystery movies that will be on for the next two weeks. I wish I could program it for a longer time span!
Pamela Frost Dennis says
Me too! Especially when I hear about a new series that sounds like something I’d love, but it’s start date is several weeks away. By the time I remember about it again, it’s already airing.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Pamela, I usually make a note to myself when I really want to see a new show. (Since I don’t watch commercials, it’s difficult to find out about new shows in advance, though.)
Patti S. says
I am glad to see the Nancy Drew movies with Bonita Granville. I have them on DVD as I love them so much. They are totally enjoyable. Thanks for the list , Danna. Appreciate it!
Pamela Frost Dennis says
Patti –
Bonita Granville was adorable as Nancy Drew. I am going to look for the DVDs to purchase. Thanks for the idea!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Pamela, that or record it onto a DVD from the TMC showing…
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Patti S, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of these Nancy Crew movies. I’m looking forward to them…
Ann says
I can highly recommend P.D. James’ Death Comes to Pemberley. They did a quality production with it and true to cozies…the characters shine through!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Ann, thank you so much. I am really looking forward to that show in particular. I have watched all of the old P.D. James’ Inspector Dalgliesh television shows, both with Roy Marsden and Martin Shaw, and cannot wait to see the next P.D. James’ television episode!
Thanks, again!
Donna Mc says
That’s a great line-up for mystery fans! I’m confused about the Inspector Lewis series, though. I thought the run had ended and there would be no more episodes featuring those two characters? Hoping I’m wrong and that Lewis and Hathaway will be back!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Donna Mc, I remember wondering if an Inspector Hathaway series was something we would be seeing in the near future.
Nicole says
Yes they had ended the series with last season (6) but then committed to another one (uh, two – would be 8 seasons).
Dont know if there could be more but i dont think there could be a season only with hathaway because the actor wanted to end the series after the last because of his family and the lot of time the filming and travelling need. This season is good will (ah well good money 😉 i think. Or they changed places!?
I am – how would you say “head over toe” in “love” with hathaway 😉 and read a interview with laurence fox and he talked lot about family and so on.
But you never know.
In summary i have to say i am very jealous about your tv possibilities. Not only you can see first because we have to wait for german synchronisation but you have sooo much more. Dont know if there ever was a movie with nancy drew here 🙁
And you dont know about german movies. Its really really not the same. One have to search about the gems 🙁
But sure i am UK and USA addicted regarding movies.
Donna Mc says
Thanks, Danna and Nicole. I wondered that too and was hoping to see an Inspector Hathaway series! He is such a good actor. After searching the PBS Masterpiece Mystery site I found an old interview with Kevin Whately, who played Lewis, and he said that it was “probably” the last season but that they might “consider doing an odd one” now and again. So maybe that is what happened. I guess this mystery will be solved when we all tune in during October. 🙂 Here is the link if anyone would like to see the interview: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/watch-online/shorts/kevin-whately-future-inspector-lewis/
Sheila says
I’m looking forward to DVD’ing the Nancy Drew shows. Never saw them with Bonita Granville. I did watch the TV Nancy Drew show starring Pamela Sue Martin.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Sheila, I hope the Bonita Granville Nancy Drew movies are a lot of fun to watch.
Joyce Ann says
Thank you for this list. I’m going to print it and keep it on my desk to refer to all month. I’ll have to record the ones I want to see. It’s not politically correct to sit and watch a movie while my husband rebuilds our deck in the heat!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joyce Ann, good idea about referring to the list, AND also, for not watching a movie inside sipping an ice-cold Coke while your husband is sweating in the heat as he rebuilds your deck!
