Vampire & Werewolf Theme Mysteries : Super Supernatural Paranormal Theme Mysteries

September 25, 2008

On to the third part of the Super Supernatural Mystery Novels with the Vampire Theme and Werewolf Theme:

Vampire:

Charlaine Harris: Southern Vampire Mystery Series… Sookie Stackhouse isn’t your run-of-the-mill cocktail waitress! Sookie happens to have a vampire boyfriend AND she’s telepathic!

Dean James (aka Honor Hartman & Jimmie Ruth Evans)… Simon Kirby-Jones is an American author living in Snupperton Mumsley, England who just happens to be a vampire!

Aimée & David Thurlo: Lee Nez Mystery Series… Lee (aka Leo) happens to be a Navajo policeman with a twist… he’s half vampire…

A site reader just asked that I include Mary Janice Davidson to the list of Cozy Mystery authors who write mysteries with a Vampire theme… Undead and Unwed is the first in the series…

Werewolf:

Karen MacInerney: Tales of an Urban Werewolf Mystery Series… Sophie Garou isn’t content with just braying at the moon…

This list doesn’t include the following Paranormal Cozy Mystery themes: Ghost, Witch, Enchanted/Magical, or Psychic or 6th Sense  (which I’ve listed on the Theme page.)

Please feel free to post a comment if you know of any other mystery authors (who are currently on the Cozy Mystery site) who you think write mysteries that would fit into this Vampire and Werewolf  Theme. Thanks!

This site is wonderful! It is so hard to keep up with my favorite authors and see who has something new, thank you for doing such a thorough job. Please add Mary Janice Davidson to your list of vampire cozies and the books about Monk and Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files to the TV file. Keep up the good work!
    Sincerely, Terri

    Hi Theresa,

I’m glad that the site is helping you track down the new books that your favorite authors publish…

Also, I added Mary Janice Davidson to the vampire list.

I do happen to have Monk on my list of TV & Movies that I want to eventually write about, but since I don’t watch the Dresden Files, I don’t feel qualified to write about that particular show.

Thanks for writing and telling us about Mary Janice Davidson (and for reminding me about Monk!)

I am looking for the author of a series about a vampire who is an American but living in an English country village. He is, I believe an academic, who can take a pill of some sort to control his vampire tendencies. It is an amusing combination of a English cozy mystery and a vampire novel. Any suggestions?

Yes, Regina, and I forgot to list him in the above list!

Dean James (aka Honor Hartman and Jimmie Ruth Evans) writes the Simon Kirby-Jones Mystery Series which features Kirby-Jones as an American vampire/writer who lives in Snupperton Mumsley, England.

Thanks for reminding me… I am going (right now) to amend the above list!

Thank you for recognizing the Simon Kirby-Jones series! I’ve read all of them I’ve come across (3 or 4 titles, I’ve lost track) and have enjoyed them all thoroughly.
You know it’s a true hallmark of a cozy mystery that it’s set in a town with a name of “Snupperton Mumsley”. How quaintly British!

Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files is also a series of books. Dresden is a wizard who helps people find things & helps the police solve unworldly crimes. This series is dark, I wouldn’t call it a cozy.

I just finished the Dresden series it was great, not very cozy, but had alot of the “cozy aspects to it. Great recurring characters.

Thanks for putting together all this information. I love your website (which a member of our mystery book club shared with us recently). I have a couple of names that you might consider adding to this genre:

Tanya Huff, a Canadian writer with a couple of the oldest supernatural mystery series: the Keeper series (witches) and the Blood series (vampires)

Patricia Briggs Mercedes Thomson series (werewolves, witches, the works). They’re a little more gritty than the average cozy, but no rougher than Charlaine Harris.

Welcome to the site, Sharmila. Thanks for the kind words.

    AND

Thanks for the authors. I know that the paranormal theme is really growing in the mystery genre. A lot of already-established authors are starting new paranormal series… which is great for paranormal buffs! (I have added the two authors you recommended to my list of authors to post.)

    Thanks, again.

Oooh, you should add John Levitt (definitely paranormal mysteries with an adorable dog) and Ilona Andrews. Excellent stuff. Two of my favorite authors. I’ve also read the Patricia Brigss series. Very good.

I have an author who you could add to the vampire list: Tanya Huff and her Victoria Nelson series. There are no more new titles in the series, but I think they would feel right at home… :o)

Patricia Briggs needs to be added to this list. I just finished her 5 in the Mercy series and all five were wonderful.

I just started a sixth book by this author, Cry Wolf, and so far I love it also.

Dare I say her series is just as interesting as the Sookie series. :o)

    Happy reading!

I didn’t see Angie Fox’s series on here under the Witch, werewolf, vampire subcategory… I am reading the first book in her series “Accidental Demon Slayer” which is excellent so far! Lizzie Brown turns 30, and on her birthday she inherits a biker-witch grandmother, a Greek-Griffen boyfriend/protector. A must read!!

      Shannon,
I know your post is old, but a funny paranormal series would be Bite Me: A Love Story by Christopher Moore. I think there are 3-4 in that series. Literally had me laughing out loud and I “read” audiobooks (ha!)
Someone else suggested Mary Janice Davidson & those are good too.

I am fairly new to your website and after looking at it a couple of times, put a bookmark on it and consider it one of the top “fab five.” It’s so good, even the comments are a goldmine of info. I have found more authors than I think I can get to (let alone all their books!), and that’s just covering about 1/10th the material listed. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I certainly prefer the cozy type and paranormal first, and they are rather hard to find. I’ll probably work my way through the entire listing. You (and your commenting fans) have made it super easy to keep me in good reads for years! cjp

Love your site, check here often. I love paranormal books but see you don’t have many listed. How do you decide which ones to list? I don’t see Gerry Bartlett’s Real Vampires series or Michele Bardsley’s Broken Heart Vampires series. Both are really fun reads!

Welcome to the Cozy Mystery site, Georganne.

I’m not familiar with either Gerry Bartlett’s Real Vampires series or Michele Bardsley’s Broken Heart Vampires series. Thanks for telling us about them.

As to your question about how I decide which series to list on the Cozy Mystery site:

Let’s see… I first get the recommendations from either Cozy Mystery site readers or sometimes the authors (or their publishers) themselves. Once I get the recommendations, I do online searches. Hopefully the authors have websites I can take a look at, and study. I also look at their books on Amazon, to see what other mystery readers say about the books. I especially like it when there are reviews from book authorities that I can read. From there, if I think the authors belong on the site, I put them on a very long author list, which I go through from time to time. I usually try to add four authors to the site at a time, although my current batch of authors has five. It takes me a while to make their individual pages, but eventually I get the authors posted.

When I first started the Cozy Mystery site, I only listed Cozy Mystery authors who I had actually read and felt I could endorse. However, I started adding authors I had never tried reading, which I’m glad I did >>> since, thanks to the many recommendations, I now have a lot more favorite authors on my personal list of authors I follow!
