Larraine, we also love the Inspector Lewis mysteries. I think that I actually like them more than the Inspector Morse mysteries… (I know I shouldn’t admit to that!)

I loved Inspector Morse and when Lewis first started I wasn’t sure that I was going to like the spin-off series, however, Kevin Whately has managed to carry on where Morse left off without losing his own identity or personality.

I’m just sorry that this is such a short series. I hope they make more soon.

Carrie, I wonder why British television has such short seasons. Maybe that’s how they keep the quality so high…

Our stupid PBS station apparently isn’t showing them until next week. On a brighter note – Did you know that Kate Atkinson’s character, Jackson Brodie, is coming to life on PBS in October. Just saw it on Facebook. This is an incredibly complex and interesting series and character. Atkinson is one of the very literary crime fiction writers.

Larraine, our PBS station has also had their beg-a-thons during the beginning of some very anticipated shows’ premieres. The good news is that they usually get back on track, and air the shows.

Watched the first Lewis on Sept 4th. Love the characters, acting, backgrounds, but feel the story resolution totally sucked. No explanation of the why of the murders, except the old one (Judd) and possibly the third one (ex-cop) and hard to even guess the why of the last one (girl returning late). Need Poirot to come in for the last act?

I have been disappointed in the quality of the scripts and the
dialogue is almost unintelligable. Is it the lack of enery or
a hint of country accents? I haven’t made up my mind, all I
know is it is pretty hard to understand what they are saying.
They seem to have more murders than Dodge City, Tombstone of the old west. Pretty unbelievable.

Bill D, I’m sorry you aren’t as happy with the scripts and/or dialogue. Speaking about murders in Dodge City/Tombstone… How about Jessica Fletcher’s Cabot Cove?!? I think the town probably got the money together to send her to live in New York!

I have tried watching the first two episodes of the new Endeavour series. I say “tried” because I can only understand about one third to one half of the dialog.

The actors speak so very rapidly and their speech mannerisms do not register very well at all on my American ears. It was hard to follow the plot even with closed captioning switched on. I finally gave it up as hopeless after watching for about ten minutes.

I have watched Mystery for over 30 years and it is sad that the audio quality has gotten so poor.

EdB, that’s a real shame that you have such difficulty deciphering their accents. We watch ours on our DVR, so are able to rewind if there is something we miss.

I agree with EdB; many British actors (and the people who hire them) don’t seem to care any more if their accents are so thick that no one can understand them. This is definitely not true for all of them, but 30 years ago it wasn’t tolerated at all.

Wow! All I can say is I was really “heartbroken” when the Chief Inspector Morse series ended. Indeed, I was when the great actor himself died. I’m sure a lot of us felt this way at the time. When they decided to continue on with Kevin Whately and with that deliciously handsome, as well as, brainy sidekick of his, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Now, the more I see the two of them together, the more I think that they were brilliantly paired to star in this series. I just hope that they would make more!

Eva, we were also really sorry when John Thaw passed away. He was so good in the Morse role, and actually, in everything we ever saw him in. We were so delighted to see that Lewis was given a chance to take over for Morse.

I remember when Kevin Whately was in The English Patient. I was one of the very few people who absolutely hated that movie… but Kevin Whately was able to light up the screen in that film…

Hmmm, I wonder what the spoiler comments contained? Now I’m curious! 🙂 I liked the new episode but there was one character whose demise was not clearly explained, and the Masterpiece Facebook page has a ton of comments about that, so I suspect the cozy mystery readers feel the same way. Regardless of the omission, I still enjoyed the show and look forward to more!

I absolutely love Lewis and Hathaway. I can’t wait until I see the next episode of Inspector Lewis. Just watched “Wild Justice” and Lewis is talking about retiring in the episode. Please don’t tell me that this is going to be the end of the duo. I will be devastated. Plus I read at the PBS website a new “young” Morse is coming in 2012. Please keep Lewis and Hathaway!

Beverly, I wonder if the retirement talk isn’t just added as a sort of teaser for us… A young Morse should be fun… Maybe the young Morse is a replacement for a retiring Lewis?

Wild Justice was great. Perfect for British mystery lovers. I didn’t like the retirement talk. Losing Thaw was terrible, we don’t want to lose Whately too (even though he is still alive) would be really lousy.

I loved the initial Morse series but love the Lewis series equally. The introduction of Hathaway is the appropriate, less judgmental counterpoint to Morse and I am seriously enjoying it. I hope they continue it.

Rosemary, it seems that Inspector Lewis has become more and more like Morse was. I don’t remember Lewis being as short-tempered as he has become now that Morse isn’t around to fill the impatient bill…
