Larraine says
am so glad you are keeping us informed about this – love this series!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Larraine, we also love the Inspector Lewis mysteries. I think that I actually like them more than the Inspector Morse mysteries… (I know I shouldn’t admit to that!)
Nan says
So excited for these new shows!!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
So are we, Nan. I have set up both of our taping devices so that I am sure we will have them when we are finally ready to watch them.
Carrie says
I loved Inspector Morse and when Lewis first started I wasn’t sure that I was going to like the spin-off series, however, Kevin Whately has managed to carry on where Morse left off without losing his own identity or personality.
I’m just sorry that this is such a short series. I hope they make more soon.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Carrie, I wonder why British television has such short seasons. Maybe that’s how they keep the quality so high…
Larraine says
Our stupid PBS station apparently isn’t showing them until next week. On a brighter note – Did you know that Kate Atkinson’s character, Jackson Brodie, is coming to life on PBS in October. Just saw it on Facebook. This is an incredibly complex and interesting series and character. Atkinson is one of the very literary crime fiction writers.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Larraine, our PBS station has also had their beg-a-thons during the beginning of some very anticipated shows’ premieres. The good news is that they usually get back on track, and air the shows.
Patty says
Thanks for letting us know about the new episodes!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
You’re quite welcome, Patty!

Danna - cozy mystery list says
Shirley, I’m glad you got the word about the PBS Masterpiece Mystery! shows >>> before they aired…

Watched the first Lewis on Sept 4th. Love the characters, acting, backgrounds, but feel the story resolution totally sucked. No explanation of the why of the murders, except the old one (Judd) and possibly the third one (ex-cop) and hard to even guess the why of the last one (girl returning late). Need Poirot to come in for the last act?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I have gotten several comments about last night’s Inspector Lewis mystery, but am not able to post them>>> as they have SPOILERS in them. Sorry to those of you who have taken the time to write a comment… but there are a lot of us who haven’t yet watched the show…

Denise Z says
Thanks for sharing. I have watched the old episodes on Netflix and did not know the series was still running:)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I hope you were able to catch the one that played on Sunday night, Denise Z. If not, I don’t know how many other PBS channels do this, but ours reruns on Tuesday morning at 12:30 (half an hour after midnight)…
Bill D. says
I have been disappointed in the quality of the scripts and the
dialogue is almost unintelligable. Is it the lack of enery or
a hint of country accents? I haven’t made up my mind, all I
know is it is pretty hard to understand what they are saying.
They seem to have more murders than Dodge City, Tombstone of the old west. Pretty unbelievable.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Bill D, I’m sorry you aren’t as happy with the scripts and/or dialogue. Speaking about murders in Dodge City/Tombstone… How about Jessica Fletcher’s Cabot Cove?!? I think the town probably got the money together to send her to live in New York!
EdB says
I have tried watching the first two episodes of the new Endeavour series. I say “tried” because I can only understand about one third to one half of the dialog.
The actors speak so very rapidly and their speech mannerisms do not register very well at all on my American ears. It was hard to follow the plot even with closed captioning switched on. I finally gave it up as hopeless after watching for about ten minutes.
I have watched Mystery for over 30 years and it is sad that the audio quality has gotten so poor.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
EdB, that’s a real shame that you have such difficulty deciphering their accents. We watch ours on our DVR, so are able to rewind if there is something we miss.
eliot says
I agree with EdB; many British actors (and the people who hire them) don’t seem to care any more if their accents are so thick that no one can understand them. This is definitely not true for all of them, but 30 years ago it wasn’t tolerated at all.
Eva says
Wow! All I can say is I was really “heartbroken” when the Chief Inspector Morse series ended. Indeed, I was when the great actor himself died. I’m sure a lot of us felt this way at the time. When they decided to continue on with Kevin Whately and with that deliciously handsome, as well as, brainy sidekick of his, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Now, the more I see the two of them together, the more I think that they were brilliantly paired to star in this series. I just hope that they would make more!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Eva, we were also really sorry when John Thaw passed away. He was so good in the Morse role, and actually, in everything we ever saw him in. We were so delighted to see that Lewis was given a chance to take over for Morse.
I remember when Kevin Whately was in The English Patient. I was one of the very few people who absolutely hated that movie… but Kevin Whately was able to light up the screen in that film…
Donna (Merry Mishaps blog) says
Hmmm, I wonder what the spoiler comments contained? Now I’m curious! 🙂 I liked the new episode but there was one character whose demise was not clearly explained, and the Masterpiece Facebook page has a ton of comments about that, so I suspect the cozy mystery readers feel the same way. Regardless of the omission, I still enjoyed the show and look forward to more!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Donna, I’ll go back and post the spoilers that people sent me, and just make a spoiler alert at the top of the comment.
Deb says
Hi everyone! New to this blog, and I absolutely had to join because I don’t know anyone else who watches this show. So glad to have found you! Never saw the Morse episodes, but absolutely love Lewis…and how could any woman not fall in love with Laurence Fox? 🙂
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Welcome to the site, Deb. Laurence Fox is rather dishy, isn’t he?
Rani says
To quote Laura …. an equine nine! He is rather yummy!
Deb says
Subtle sense of humor, strong silent type, bit of a bad boy….the only syllable I can utter in relation to Laurence Fox is yummmmmmmmmm.
Beverly says
I absolutely love Lewis and Hathaway. I can’t wait until I see the next episode of Inspector Lewis. Just watched “Wild Justice” and Lewis is talking about retiring in the episode. Please don’t tell me that this is going to be the end of the duo. I will be devastated. Plus I read at the PBS website a new “young” Morse is coming in 2012. Please keep Lewis and Hathaway!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Beverly, I wonder if the retirement talk isn’t just added as a sort of teaser for us… A young Morse should be fun… Maybe the young Morse is a replacement for a retiring Lewis?
Ricky says
Wild Justice was great. Perfect for British mystery lovers. I didn’t like the retirement talk. Losing Thaw was terrible, we don’t want to lose Whately too (even though he is still alive) would be really lousy.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I totally agree with you, Ricky, about losing Inspector Lewis to retirement!
Allie F. says
I LOVE the Inspector Lewis series…..far better than most of the “programs” on American TV!!! The pairing of Lewis and Hathaway is brilliant. Please….keep them coming!
Allie F. says
PS: I was a huge Morse fan as well, and have watched every episode. I wished they would re-run them all.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Wouldn’t that be great if they would rerun all of the British mystery shows we all love, Allie F?!?
Rosemary says
I loved the initial Morse series but love the Lewis series equally. The introduction of Hathaway is the appropriate, less judgmental counterpoint to Morse and I am seriously enjoying it. I hope they continue it.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Rosemary, it seems that Inspector Lewis has become more and more like Morse was. I don’t remember Lewis being as short-tempered as he has become now that Morse isn’t around to fill the impatient bill…

Have watched the latest episode of Lewis and Hathaway three times now, and I still want to know, who killed Adreanna? The founder of the floundering Children of Promise trust. Can I really be that dense? Please, somebody, help.
Eva says
Does anybody know if we are going to see another series of Inspector Lewis this year?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Eva, I just checked the PBS site, and couldn’t find out anything about a new Inspector Lewis series.
Deb says
They’re back, in case anyone was wondering 🙂 Hathaway is still delicious as always.
