Cagney & Lacey … ONLY one of the best television shows!

December 14, 2007

I was just trying to think of some shows that I really enjoyed watching. Some of the shows stand out more than others. I remember that a cable channel (in the U.S.) showed one of my all-time favorite police shows a few years ago. The channel aired the shows every weekday, at the same time, and I had my VCR programmed to get every last one of those shows… Now I’m sorry that I didn’t keep the VHS tapes. (Of course, I would have had to keep our VCR hooked up!)

“Cagney & Lacey” is one of the shows that I remember most fondly. I absolutely loved the comradeship of the two women… and I also loved how different they were. Sharon Gless (Christine Cagney) and Tyne Daly (Mary Beth Lacey) could not have been better cast as these two diverse women. (Sharon Gless replaced Meg Foster… and even Loretta Switt in the role!) Cagney was the wise-cracking, brutally frank police officer…. single, with a private life that could not have been messier. Lacey, on the other hand, was the police woman who had to use tact to gloss over Cagney’s (almost) bull-headed ways…. She was married, with a very loving husband and children.

By the time the show aired I had already graduated from college, and had held jobs in the work force… But, my jobs didn’t have anything in common with the jobs that these two police officers had… They were tough women who always caught their man (or woman… whoever the culprit happened to be!) And, back in the early 1980s, I don’t remember a whole lot of shows where the two lead characters were women…. and tough and smart at that!

Cozy Authors to Add to the Cozy Mystery Site…

December 13, 2007

I just added four new authors to the Cozy Mystery Site’s pages. They are all authors who I just found out about…. Barbara Allan, Candy Calvert, Sally Goldenbaum, and Natalie M. Roberts. (Thanks to you, the Cozy Mystery Site’s Readers!)

Barbara Allan is a husband and wife writing team who write the Trash n’ Treasure Mystery Series.

Candy Calvert, along with being the author of the Darcy Cavanaugh Cruise Mystery Series, is also an RN. Is it any wonder that she writes a mystery series that takes place on a cruise ship…. while her sleuth is an RN?

And, for you cozy quilters…. Sally Goldenbaum writes the Queen Bees Quilt Mystery Series.

Also, if you are the proud parent of a child who enjoys/takes dance classes…. Natalie M. Roberts writes the Jenny T. Partridge Dance Mystery Series.

Mini Mysteries, Five Minute Mysteries, Whodunits!

December 9, 2007

I have been trying to come up with some little stocking stuffer types of things lately. Just little things that fill up a small amount of space… Things that take the place of yesteryear’s oranges and nuts…. Things that could actually be fun to get, rather than simply added into the nut bowl or the fruit drawer in the refrigerator.

I found these little gadget/things called Tangles last year that my (grown) son enjoys keeping by his computer. I think that they are ideal for people who fidget… people who just can’t seem to keep their hands from moving. (I probably could benefit from having some of these Tangles by my television chair… Instead, I cross stitch while watching television. I simply can’t seem to stay still!)

Another idea came to me the other day while going through a box of things my (grown) daughter no longer needs… She had a copy of Almost Perfect Crimes by Hy Conrad. It is a book of "Mini-Mysteries for You to Solve." I am not sure for what age the mysteries are intended, but I found myself trying to solve a few, and I now have the book by my bedside… so that I can solve more!  (I just looked up Hy Conrad and found that he has several Mini-Mystery books, some which are definitely intended for children… Kid’s Whodunits: Catch the Clues!)

I am still trying to come up with ideas for small gifts… but am sort of at a standstill. Do any of you have really good "stocking stuffer" types of ideas for any age group? If so, please send me a comment…

Only a Few Pages Until I Catch Up with One of My Favorite Authors…

December 4, 2007

I am currently listening to Ann Granger‘s last Markby and Mitchell Village Whodunit Mystery, and I am sick about it! I know that I have mentioned (several times) about how I hate to "catch up" with my favorite authors. I try to leave a few books in my TBR (To Be Read) pile so that I have some books to really look forward to. But, since I read my books faster (just barely!) than an author writes his/her books, invariably, there comes a day when I "level out" with the author.

The latest author who simply isn’t writing fast enough for me is Ann Granger. I waited and waited to finally read her fifteenth Markby & Mitchell novel (That Way Murder Lies), but I finally broke down and started listening to it…. and could simply not put it down (or should I say "turn it off"?!?) I now have only a few chapters until I will no longer have "an Ann Granger" to look forward to…

I was so delighted when I found that audible.com carried her novels. I quickly purchased them (unabridged, of course!) and gave my TBR "real books" to my library for other connoisseurs of wonderful books to enjoy. And, as excited as I was to get the books "on tape"… I was even more excited when I heard Judith Boyd’s phenomenal reading of the books. (She’s right up there with my other favorite book narrators.)

Perhaps I should take a more positive view of this…. a glass half full approach… a silver lining in the clouds… Nope! Doggone it…. Why can’t my favorite authors just write faster!?!
