New Orleans, Here We Come!

March 30, 2014

Here’s a quick post to let you know my husband and I are heading out to New Orleans this morning. Google maps says it’s a nine hour trip, and I am hoping it (they?) is (are?) correct. Our son is going to be holding down the fort here, even though Sprite (our puppy) is no longer with us. Having him here let’s me enjoy my trips.

My husband and I are scoping out apartments for our daughter. Her clerkship is over in August and she will be starting another one the next week. So we will be trying to find a place for her to rent for the year she is in New Orleans. I hope we find a place she’ll be happy and SAFE. She has e-mailed us several complexes that she has looked into, which will make our scouting trip a little easier.

We still haven’t decided whether we are going to turn the scouting trip into a vacation. We’ll wait and see how many places we end up looking at, and how tired we get.

I’ve got a few posts that will be going up automatically: the TV Mystery Movies and the May New Releases. Other than that, I’ll probably be chatting about our trip. Hopefully it will be more amusing than just talking about the apartment situation.

I downloaded the latest Alexander McCall Smith No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon) and his last 44 Scotland Street (Bertie Plays the Blues) as well as Spencer Quinn’s The Dog Who Knew Too Much and some Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendell, and Ngaio Marsh mysteries. We should be able to agree on at least one audio mystery!

Hope you and your husband find a nice, safe place for your daughter to stay. We always worry about our sons and daughters when they are out on their own far away from us. She must be very excited though, to be spending a year in New Orleans. Have a safe trip and hope you and your husband get to spend some fun time together just to relax and see the sights.

Thanks, Judy. I just hope we can find someplace safe, safe, and did I mention, safe? It’s a bit of a responsibility… Once we find a few places, we hope to at least relax, perhaps not much fun on this particular “fact-finding” trip.

Wishing you a safe trip with enjoyable hours of apartment hunting and reading/listening hours. Your daughter is so fortunate to have you do the ‘leg work’. I found the ‘Chet’ books through your blog and have enjoyed the first 3 books.

PamB, I get such a kick out of Chet, the Jet.

Since our daughter won’t be able to take any time off, she was just going to pick a place off of the internet. Not a good solution for us to envision…

    Danna…

I picked up the book below yesterday as it was noted as a cozy mystery….haven’t read it and know nothing about it. It is on my list after the book I’m currently reading….which is the creative Woman series number 12 Horseplay at White Meadows by Marlene Chase.

52 Steps to Murder (number 1 in the Dekker cozy mystery series) by Steve Demaree.

I was glad to see that I’m not the only one who remembers specific lines from certain books….I’m reading Horseplay at White Meadows and in the book there is a line from Anne of a Green Gables…the line…”Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet”. Spoken by Miss Stacy to Anne….from one of my all time favourite books and as I was reading the line I immediately recognized it….thank you Marlene Chase for reminding us that authors write, but they also read.

Have a safe trip to New Orleans and a safe trip back home. Good luck in finding a safe place for your daughter to live. Can’t wait to hear about your adventure.

Sheila, the first area that we looked at tonight (daylight savings allowed us to drive around a little), we took off our list of hopefuls.

    Have a safe trip.

so glad to read that you have a “house-sitter.” Always cringe to read people say they are going away… Without any mention of their house being lived in.

Oh gracious, good luck with finding a SAFE living area for your daughter! -sigh- I’m sure she will find living there, a coooool experience. But logic says, safety must be in her mind, at all time.

Tessa, I have to admit that safety is in our minds a little more than hers.

Thanks, Dru. Right as we were approaching New Orleans, a truck passed several cars on the right shoulder of the interstate while honking their horn to let us know they were in a hurry to get someplace. That was rather scary!

Welcome. I lived in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina moved us to the Northshore of lake Ponchatrain. She’s going to love it. I would suggest that you do an online search of the crime maps in the areas she is considering. Like a lot of older cities, good neighborhoods and bad are sometimes hard to distinguish. I love my hometown but in the post-Katrina world crime is a concern. If you have any questions, just email me. I’d be happy to give you my perspective for what it’s worth.

Nikki, thank you so much for your help via emails. My husband and I are pretty sure we have narrowed down three apartment complexes for our daughter to look into, based on your input.

      Thanks, again!
