Knitting Shop, Archaeological Dig, Ferocious Cat, Rain, & Murder…

October 11, 2015

KnittingYou know how it is when you just can’t remember the name of an author who writes a series you want to revisit? I sure do! Well, Libby is asking for our help in identifying her lost/misplaced/forgotten author:

Libby:

Do you know of a book that is about an American woman married to an English man (or perhaps a Scot) who travels to Orkney Islands. There is an archaeological dig going on on one of the other islands which they visit. Of course, there is contention about this and next thing you know the sponsor who is underwriting the cost is murdered. There’s lots of rain, a resident cat that is quite ferocious, the woman and her husband have a dog, she visits a knitting shop on Orkney’s mainland and gets to know some of the locals.

I read this last fall, but didn’t make a note of the title or the author (I thought I could remember – instead I have spent months racking my brain and cruising the internet for possibilities.) I know there are others in the series with this woman (who I’m ashamed to say I can’t remember the name of!) as the detective. Is it possible that this rings a bell with you?Rain

If you think you know who the author Libby is looking for, please post a comment. Thank you!

I think I found it. Try The Orkney Scroll in Archaeological Mysteries, No. 10 by Lyn Hamilton. It meets the things you listed above in a book. Amazon.com listed it. Hope this helps!!

It is not a series or author I have read, but I asked a friend who enjoys books set in Great Britian and those set around an archaeological theme and he sugested Lyn Hamilton? He mentioned the main character is Canadian and the stories traveled a bit. Hope this helps.

The name of the author is Jeanne M. Dams. She lives in South Bend, Indiana. The American woman married to an Englishman is called Dorothy Martin. The series is set in the Cotswolds.

I think the author could be Sharyn McCrumb. Her “detective” is named Elizabeth MacPherson and she lives in NC, I believe.

Shadows of Death has a feral cat in it. That is what tipped me off on the possibility it might be the book you are trying to remember.

Wow! I’m so glad Libby asked her question and that so many cozy lovers came up with answers. I’ve now added the Dorothy Martin series by Jeanne M. Dams to my TBR list and I’m also going to check out Lyn Hamilton’s “Orkney Scrolls.” Any book with an archaeological theme works for me! Can’t wait to try these new-to-me authors. Thanks ladies!
