I know it’s only Wednesday, but I want to make sure all of you Jesse Stone movie fans get the word: Tom Selleck will be back this Sunday night (on CBS) as Jesse Stone. The newest of the Jesse Stone movies is called Benefit of the Doubt. (The Jesse Stone movies are based on Robert B. Parker‘s Jesse Stone Mystery Series.)
My husband and I are Jesse Stone movie fans, and I have already set up our DVR (equivalent) form of taping. Can you tell we are looking forward to this latest Jesse Stone addition?
This will be the eighth Jesse Stone movie in the series. For those of you who might be “arriving late to the dance” >>> Jesse Stone is the police chief of a town called Paradise. He “left” his big-city job because of his heavy drinking, and has done a great job as the police chief… except in the eyes of a few higher-ups of the town, who have put him on administrative leave (I can’t remember if it was permanent, or not). Benefit of the Doubt has Jesse trying to get his job back.
The even better news is that a lot of the “regulars” will be back, also. Kathy Baker (Rose), Kohl Sudduth (Suitcase), Saul Rubinek (Hasty Hathaway), William Devane (Jesse’s psychologist), William Sadlerd (an underworld-type mobster), and Stephen McHattie (a homicide commander for the state.)

I loved the Jesse Stone novels by the late Robert Parker but I had a hard time getting used to Tom Selleck playing Jesse’s part. But as I got used to watching the movies I came to think that Tom Selleck makes a great Jesse Stone. I hope in the future there will be movies that include Holly Barker but since I don’t go to many movies I have no idea who could play Holly’s part. I hope her father is included in the movies with Holly. I hated when Holly was taken away from being her town cop. Sure was more interesting then when she was hooked up with some sort of FBI or CIA group. She was more believable as a town cop. Love these two characters, Holly and Jesse as well as the other characters from the novels.

Linda, I had the same problem with the Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley television series. I simply could never get used to the actress they picked to play Barbara Havers. Eventually, I was able to watch the show, but tried not to associate it with the mystery books.

I have not read the Robert Parker books, I am thinking I may need to try them as I love the movies. It will be easier to read as I will picture Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone, (not hard to take is it ladies). Kind of like reading the Murder She Wrote books, the only way you can picture Jessica Fletcher is as Angela Lansbury. Looking forward to the movie and I also will set the DVR.

My husband & I have been fans from the start. The writing is superb, the acting awesome, not to mention the interaction between the characters is one of a kind. You don’t see this often in movies or t.v. (movies), where the actors blend so well and naturally with each other & feed off from each other as the actors do in the Jesse Stone stories. Love them all. And, PLEASE, PLEASE bring back Holly. She was on leave for her baby, but please bring her back. She’s such a great character in her role. And, to Tom Sellleck……..this has to be one of the best roles you’ve ever done. Please tell us you will do as many more in this series as you can. Only wish they came out a bit more often, than once a yr.

It would be nice to see more of these movies, but, as of now, CBS apparently hasn’t contracted for any more.

I have seen each one and love them. I have watched repeat episodes. Unfortunately I have no recording device and this Sunday is the final “Sherlock” episode on PBS! I will be looking for Jesse Stone reruns.

Although I am a film buff, I remain confused over the ending of the “Benefit of the Doubt” movie and would like to see some discussion / clarification. Who was the sniper working for? How did he spot Jesse? Was he also after Hasty? And who was Geno’s boss?
Apparently Hasty made off with a huge duffel bag full of cash – (drug money?). Who were his accomplices in the boat??
I gather that either killing Jesse, or Hasty’s getaway (or both) were being planned for “the 24th” and had to be moved up.
Having all or most of the characters constantly giving 2 word answers didn’t seem realistic (“I do.” “It does.” etc.). If just Jesse did this, it would be cool – but having all the characters speaking like this was unlike real life, IMHO.
Any discussion of the denouement would be much appreciated. It remains a mystery to me! 🙂

I just finished Benefit of the Doubt, so here goes:
I believe the sniper was working for Hasy. He was there to insure that Hasty was able to get away. It turns out that Hasty was the big boss, and as such, Gino’s boss.

Was anyone else other then my husband and myself disappointed with Sunday nights viewing of the latest Jesse Stone movie?
We could be spoiled by the fact we enjoy Tom Selleck in the t.v. series Blue Bloods or perhaps it was too long of a time between the Jesse Stone movies but it was a little slow, we don’t remember a love interest and we would have liked to have seen more of Kathy Baker.

I was very disappointed to only see Rose for that little, itty, bitty amount of time. The same goes for Suitcase. When I looked up the details of the movie (in order to write my entry) it said that both of the actors were in the show. HELLO!!! I would not have guessed it both of them would have been limited to the five minutes (at best!) they both got.

I kept trying to remind myself all day long that I wanted to watch this movie. About 9:30 I remembered. I hate to go into a movie after that long a time. Sometimes if I miss the first few minutes of a movie I miss a lot. Maybe there will be another showing later on this summer.

I think you’re probably right, Linda C. They will no doubt run the rerun at some point soon. I remember years and years ago when the networks actually wanted to keep their viewers, and rather than show the same shows during the summer months, they ran new, summer fare. Not so anymore!

Danna, Now that baseball is over for this year, and the Elections are over (hooway!!) this kind of TV movie would be great to watch. Hope the TV producers, or whoever it is who decides to put things on TV will take advantage of this and put movies like the Jesses Stone movies on TV. This would be a great way of getting me to watch network TV again.

Love these movies with Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone but-I found this one a little slow in the begining and then almost too fast in the end with many questions. hmmmm…maybe just me. Hope Rose will be back and I did not care for Jesse’s love interest in this one. ???? Love Reggie. What are you looking at? lol And I miss Jen’s phone call. I would love to see Rose come back in the next Jesse Stone movie (if there is one!), oh, and Suitcase.
As for me, I never liked Jen’s phone calls, so I was happy not to have them in this movie.
Every time I see Reggie sitting and just “looking” I think of him as Jesse’s conscience.
Also, Jesse’s girlfriend (Hasty’s secretary) was his girlfriend in (at least) the last movie. You can tell this is based on a series written by a man>>> ALL of Jesse’s girlfriends have been half his age, and smoking hot! (And, let’s face it, since Jesse isn’t a rich man, it’s pretty doubtful he would absolutely NEVER end up with a woman closer to his age!)

I have to admit that I haven’t yet watched Benefit of the Doubt. We had a rather hectic day yesterday, trying to cram in family time before my daughter started studying (today) for the Bar exam. And, since we never watch anything live on television, yesterday would have been our Jesse Stone movie day.

Julia, this new “Sherlock” Mystery! is one of the few Masterpiece Theatre shows I simply could not watch. I probably would have been able to watch it, had they not changed the whole feeling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s memorable character. If they had created totally new characters, and not relied on the Sherlock Holmes “packaging” >>> then I probably would have had a choice to make between this final episode and any other Sunday night television fare.

I am sad that CBS cancelled the Jesse Stone series. It will be replaced by some inane comedy or reality show where everyone is a moron. Will go back to local library and see if they carry the books and the TV scripts.

It is the Intermezzo in A Major Op 188 no.2 by Johannes Brahms.
Does anyone know the piece that was played when “Jesse” makes the connection to Hasty? He is sitting on the bench by the water. It is mostly piano, but it sounds like there is a clarinet in the mix as well. I’m thinking maybe a piano trio?

i do believe that when tom selleck took on these roles for these series, he knew it was going to be a success. i could not think of anyone else to replace him. i think as a mature and a little bit older actor fits him right where he needs to be at this stage in his life.

I love Tom Selleck in the role of Jesse Stone. I didn’t at first, though. But as I continued to watch the TV movies I got where I decided he was the best actor for this role. Loved the new book; read it in one day!!

Danna, I have often wondered if actors and actresses who play likable characters are really likable people in real life? Tom Selleck is a very likable actor. I couldn’t imagine him not being a good guy in real life. But there are some actors and actresses who have played some really mean parts so well that I wonder if just how hard these people are acting?
I can’t remember his name (Chuck Conners) right offhand but the actor who played “The Rifleman” in a long ago TV Cowboy series also played in “Roots.” He played a terrible part in “Roots” and he played that part so well that I never liked him in any other movie after that.
John Travolta played some great characters in most of the shows and movies that I seen him play in except for “Broken Arrow.” (I think that was the name of the movie. At the end of the movie he road a guided missile to his death, or I suppose he died. Haven’t liked him in any other movies since.
Kevin Bacon played some very good parts throughout his career. But then I saw him play in a movie called “The Sleepers” that also starred Robert De Niro (close enough) and hated him in that movie. He played a very terrible person who abused young boys in a juvenile correction institution in New York City. But then I also saw a movie he starred in called “Taking Chance”, which was about a Marine officer whose job was to escort those fellow Marines who died in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan back to their hometown for burial. I cried my eyes out this whole movie. At that time I had 2 great nephews fighting in that war. That movie was such a heart warming movie.
In this movie Kevin Bacon played an excellent part and I forgave him for “The Sleepers.”
Doris Roberts played a terrible character on “Everybody Loves Raymond” and I couldn’t stand her in that show. But I loved her in the Christmas shows that she is in.
One time I complained about some of the actors on some of the TV Soaps being so mean. Someone told me that that was a sign that that person was doing his/her job very well. I guess we aren’t supposed to like everyone in our books or our TVs and in movies. Somebody has to be the “Bad Guy.”
