Even More Television Mystery Movies for January 2014

January 21, 2014

I want to let you all know that I have found some more television mystery movies that will be airing this month. I am not going to add these to the January 2014 Upcoming Television Mystery Movies list since some of you have told me that you print the lists as soon as I publish them in order to make them handier for you to set up your DVRs, which would mean you wouldn’t see these additions.

I know that some of you don’t have access to the Hallmark Movie channel, I’m sorry about that. But for those of you who do, all of these movies will be shown on that channel. I have listed them in my time zone: Central. (As you can see, adaptations of Mary Higgins Clark’s mysteries make quite a few appearances this month on the Hallmark Movie channel.)

Because of the playoff games in the NFL I didn’t get to watch the last two weeks of Downton Abby. I sure do hope those people who schedule that terrific TV show realize that and the try to re televise those days, that I would assume a lot more people than just me missed.

Linda C, what a shame! Our PBS station re-airs the Masterpiece shows at least once a week (perhaps twice).

I just discovered the Hildegarde Withers mysteries from the 1930s. The PBS station in Milwaukee just aired one last Saturday and I really enjoyed it. Hildegarde is a straightlaced schoolmarm who has a wicked sense of humor and doesn’t hesitate to take on the local police chief. The dialogue reminded me of old Hepburn-Tracy movies or even the Thin Man. Amazon is selling a DVR of 6 movies for about $30.

Kalena, were the Hildegarde Withers mystery movies the ones that star Edna Mae Oliver in them? Those are the only ones I have been able to find. I see that (the beauty) Eve Arden played Miss Wither in a 1972 television movie. Hmmm… I can’t help but shake my head at that!

(Thanks for telling us about The Hildegarde Withers Movie Collection.)

Danna, Apologies for the delayed response but my computer decided to take a break for a few days! Yes, Edna Mae Oliver is the star of the series.

Kalena, after seeing Edna Mae Oliver as Miss Withers, I can’t imagine anyone else playing her.

MEtv will be showing a Nero Wolfe made-for-TV movie on January 31. Going by the commercial, it looks like it was made in the 1970s. I’ve already set my DVR!

Donna Mc, thank you for the information about MEtv showing the Nero Wolfe movies. Would these be the ones with William Conrad (from the 1980s) or the 1970s Italian movies with Tino Buazzelli as Nero Wolfe?

(Now I have to go see if I get MEtv!)

Hmmm, good question, Danna! The commercial was so brief that I couldn’t recognize any faces, but I did an internet search and found a made-for-tv movie from 1977 starring David Thayer as Nero Wolfe. Lately MEtv has been showing a lot of old made-for-tv mystery movies on Friday nights, like those Perry Mason ones from the ’80s.

Thanks, Donna Mc. I just looked up MEtv’s schedule for January 31, and I couldn’t find any Nero Wolfe movies showing. When I accessed the site, I realized that this is a channel some of you told us about a while back. It looks like they show all sorts of “older” reruns, which is when I realized I don’t have access to it.

Aw, that’s a shame. They air a lot of great shows! The schedule differs according to location, you have to put in a zip code to find the one in your area. Maybe it will be added to your location soon, it seems to be a popular network that is growing.

I don’t know if you will get this in the U.S. but B.B.C. Four have been re-running the Italian Rai t.v. versions of Andrea Cammilleri’s Montalbano books and the “pre-quels” series of “Young Montalbano.”
They are also on the BBC IPlayer. They are very faithful to the books and are absolutely enchanting.
