October is almost over, so it’s time to discuss our favorite Cozies that we read this month!

The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian this is the first book in her Accidental Alchemist series and is worth checking out it is not paranormal but more fantasy. The cozy companion is a gargoyle name Dorian Robert-Houdin and the main character Zoe Faust is over 300 years old! I really enjoyed this book.
Death and the Sister by Heather Redmond is the first book in her Mary Shelly cozy mystery series which starts when Mary meets Percy Shelly but is more about Mary Shelly and the relationship with her step sister Jane Clairmont. I really enjoyed this first book and loved all the historical facts I learned about Mary Shelly and her family. Really loved the her sleuthing partners were her stepsister Jane and Percy Shelley (before either were married or famous).

I met 13 authors at the Cozy Fete in Shiremanstown this month. So far I can recommend Dead to Writes by Cathy Wiley, Vintage Trailers and Blackmailers by Heather Weidner and A Pose Before Dying and The Pomeranian Always Barks Twice by Alex Erickson.
As always I love Donna Andrews. Between A Flock and a Hard Place doesn’t take place at Christmas, which was great because I prefer non-winter stories. Murder Among the Pyramids was a nice historical by Sara Rosett.

In they company of Witches by Auralee Wallace. Book one in Evenfall Witches B&B Mystery Book series. Really well written. Very cosy, but also very real.

I always find the mysteries by Clare Chase worth waiting for (there is always a wait at my public library), and Mystery on Meadowsweet Grove was no exception. Book #12 of 14 of the Eve Mallow mystery series focuses on open garden day in the village of Saxford-St.Peter. What is supposed to be a carefree, lovely time turns into a murder that brings suspicion to her friend Vivian’s future daughter-in-law. Lots of twists and turns, great atmosphere and full characterization. I am glad she seems to be a fairly prolific writer (more than a book a year!).
A relatively new author, Philipp Schott, writes about a Manitoba veterinarian, Dr. Peter Bannerman. Although he’s written other books, the Bannerman series is Schott’s first mystery series. Two books have come out so far, Fifty-Four Pigs AND Six Ostriches–great titles! Schott’s descriptions of stunning Canadian scenery, the fictional, rural town of New Selfross (“Canada’s quirkiest city”), and its residents (primarily of Icelandic and Scandinavian descent) are immediately engaging. Dr. Bannerman and his amazing scent dog Pippin are both wonderful characters who work well together. The bloodshed described in each book could be considered a bit more than one usually finds in cozies, but the characters, animals, and necessary attention to detail places the books in the cozy sphere. Can’t wait for the next book!

I found 2 new series this month, but, alas, so far they only consist of 2 books each. The first series is the Homefront News Mysteries by Joyce St Anthony. The books are Front Page Murder and Death on a Deadline. The owner/editor of a small town newspaper volunteers to cover World War II, so his daughter takes over running the paper. This is close to my heart as I was a journalism major in college. Lots of adventure and set in WWII, my favorite time.
Second series is the Mrs Hudson and Mary Watson Investigations. Two books again – All Roads Lead to Whitechapel and No One Notices the Boys. It was fascinating to me to find out the (possible) backstories of Mrs Hudson and Mary, as they decide to take on cases Sherlock Holmes doesn’t. Great writing and very exciting premises, as Mrs Hudson and Mary get into literally life or death situations. I also very much enjoyed finding out more about the Irregulars, who figure prominently in each book.

Claudia, I don’t normally respond to these recommendations, but you might be interested to know that Joyce St. Anthony is a pseudonym for Joyce Tremel, so you may also be interested in those mysteries as well.

Claudia–It looks like the two books about Mary and Mrs. Hudson were published in the UK under different titles. The books are by Michelle Birkby, and the Pan Books editions (from 2016/17) are titled: The House at Baker Street and the second Women of Baker Street. Based on the descriptions provided by Amazon, the two, 2-book series appear to be the same. I’ve just tried to buy them since you made them sound so good!

Kylie Logan’s Mayhem at the Orient Express kept my attention. Three neighbors who fight are ordered to form a literary discussion group and they are joined by a fourth neighbor who is interested. They choose as their first book Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. As it happens the owner of a Chinese restaurant “The Orient Express” is found dead by all four. A major snow storm is formed, any transportation to and from the island is discontinued and the narrator, Bea Cartwright, a recently transplant who built a B&B is now hosting islanders who lost power. They decided to start their own investigation and find interesting clues about some of the guests.
I am looking forward to the next installment(s) to find the secret of the Bea Cartwright who left New York City with funds to build the B&B
I also enjoyed Maya Corrigan By Cook or by Crook and Scam Chowder. As with most recent books, Val moved from a big city to live with her grandfather in Chesapeake Bay, running a cafe at a fitness center and happened to find a dead body. She ended up investigating while interacting with interesting characters, including he grandfather who decided to learn how to cook.

This series is my all time favorite for laugh out loud hysterical. I highly recommend it.
