First, let me preface this blog post by saying I LOVE Sir Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. We (my husband and grown children) have tried to watch all of the Sherlock Holmes shows/movies – and I thought we had! However I was wrong…
My husband and I just finished watching the 1954 series called Sherlock Holmes (which is available on Prime). The series is based on Sir Conan Doyle’s characters and as such, is not based on all of Doyle’s stories. Sheldon Reynolds is the producer of this very enjoyable series. Each episode is formatted to a television half hour show, which might have been about 26 minutes back in 1954.
Sherlock Holmes starred Ronald Howard and his faithful Dr. Watson was played by H. Marion Crawford. Archie Duncan was cast as Inspector Lestrade. All three of these actors portrayed their characters extremely well. I especially enjoy seeing what great friends Holmes and Watson were, and also, how willing they were to let Inspector Lestrade take the credit for their many cases (39 episodes) – even though Lestrade was not quite as instrumental as he believe he was.
The characters, settings, and stories are all believable and well done. In some cases, Sherlock Holmes doesn’t need to do much detecting because he’s able to gleam the clues and come up with a solution.
We enjoyed this 1954 Sherlock Holmes series – which as I said is on Amazon Prime. I am not sure, but I’m guessing it’s also available on YouTube.
PS: Don’t expect these episodes to be based on Conan Doyle’s stories.
PPS: Sorry about delays in posting lately – I have been having some personal issues, being sick over the holidays…. and now Cocoa (our dog) is having (significantly more serious) health issues as well. However, I hope to get back into posting soon.
