British Television Mystery Series: McDonald & Dodds

First, let me start off by saying I love this ITV British television crime series. McDonald & Dodds takes place in Bath, a beautiful English city which is about 100 miles from London.

Detective Chief Inspector McDonald (Tala Gouveia) is transferred from London to Bath – where she is ready to take on the world. She wants to move up the police ladder. Unfortunately for her, she is forced to partner with Detective Sergeant Dodds (Jason Watkins). The Chief Superintendent (James Murray) wants to force Dodds to retire since Dodds still works in a very deliberate and outdated mode. Dodds doesn’t use a computer for research since he much prefers going to the library to gather his facts. He also is a paper and pen note taker, etc. All of this irritates McDonald – but the Chief Superintendent is so determined to put an end to Dodds’ career that he refuses to let McDonald off the “make-him-retire” hook. Needless to say, Dodds is quite quirky…

McDonald is quite different than Dodds. She’s a very modern detective and is quite good at heading her small group of investigators. She is very ambitious and expects a lot from her officers.

All of the actors do great jobs portraying their unique characters. The writing is smart, the plots are interesting, and the setting is absolutely beautiful. I very much recommend McDonald & Dodd. It is currently aired on BritBox.

Spoiler alert: The show doesn’t force the two main characters to remain locked into their quirky vs. exasperated personalities. The two main characters actually evolve.

Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for June 2022

For those of you who grew up reading the Nancy Drew mystery books, there’s good news for you this month! On Monday, June 27 the Turner Classic Movies channel will be showing all four of the Nancy Drew mystery movies that star Bonita Granville. I have seen them all a couple of times but I still plan on watching all four of them again. I think they have the same feeling/spirit as the books. Bonita Granville IS Nancy Drew!

Also, as much as I love Raymond Burr’s Perry Mason – there is another actor who was cast as Perry several times. This month, there are three Perry Mason movies that star Warren William as Perry. I really like Warren William but let’s face it, Raymond Burr IS Perry! William puts quite a different spin on Perry… (All three movies will be shown on Saturday mornings — the 11th, 18th, and 25th.)

Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for May 2022

I really enjoy watching the old documentary shorts that they used as filler time in theaters years and years ago. James A. Fitzgerald is the presenter on these old documentaries from the 1930s and 1940s. (No, I wasn’t around for these theater gems way back then!) I not only enjoy seeing what the different destinations of the films were like back then, but I also enjoy seeing what the people were wearing back then. Women in dresses – sometimes wearing hats, men in suits and ties… It certainly was a different world! Anyway, on Thursday, April 5 the Turner Classic Movies channel will be showing a lot of these documentary shorts featuring Mexico. On Wednesday the 4th they’ll be showing shorts on Curaçao, Guatemala, and Havana. There are other documentary shorts sprinkled throughout the month, as well as the rest of the year.

There are a several mystery movies that will be playing this month, however it seems like there aren’t as many as usual.
