Recommendations for NEW Cozy Mystery Readers…

September 28, 2010

A couple of days ago, Michelle submitted a comment asking for help.

“I just started reading cozy mysteries so what is new to me is probably good old reading for the rest of the mystery fans. I absolutely love the Wine Country Mysteries by Michele Scott. I currently am still reading those and I just discovered the Coffee House Mysteries by Cleo Coyle. If any of you have any rec’s I would love to hear them…”

I know that amongst us, we have many different likes and dislikes. The authors I might suggest might be quite different that authors who you all might think that Michelle would enjoy, and vice versa.

So, do any of you have a Cozy Mystery author (or even two or three!) who you think should be on the top of any new Cozy Mystery reader list?

I do! (I’ll start with just one… I don’t want to monopolize!)

Anne George: the Southern Sisters Mystery Series is full of heart and great characters, and also fun to read.

Please post a comment with your recommendation(s)…

PS>>> I have just posted a list of all of the mystery book authors who Cozy Mystery site readers have recommended. Here is the list of the Recommendations for Cozy Mystery Authors for NEW Cozy Mystery Readers.

Mystery Book Series – Anthropology or Artifacts ???

September 1, 2010

Here’s another mystery book mystery! Sara asked us to help her find the author for this mystery book series:

“I’m trying to recall the author of this series, and would appreciate help from you and your readers. IF I remember it correctly, it’s a series that came out at least since 1996 (or later) in which a female who works either in anthropology or with Native American artifacts in a western U.S. state. She found clues to a hidden mine (gold or silver maybe???) and one of the books had a really old map in it that she traced. I think there were at least three books or more in the series. Any clues? Thanks. SARA”

If you think you might know who the mystery author is, please post a comment.

PS… I probably should have included the fact that Sara posted her comment on the Cozy Mystery Professions’ Theme:
Mystery Books with Anthropologists and Archaelogists as Their Sleuths…

Cozy Mystery (Audio) Books on Tape…

August 19, 2010

A site reader (Linda) wrote the other day with a question that I have actually gotten from other Cozy Mystery site readers. Since it involves audible.com and audio books, I decided to see what I could come up with for her, and thought that I would ask you all if you have any suggestions for Linda.

“I have a question for you and possibly an area to add to your site – cozy mysteries on audiobooks.  There just aren’t very many of them that are recorded.  My mother is legally blind and a lover of cozy mysteries.  I subscribed her to Audible.com and use your site to look up possible cozy mysteries that she would like.  It’s getting harder and harder to find any though – I look them up one by one, dozens and dozens and dozens before I find ONE that is available on audiobook.

I’m sure there are others who follow your website that have vision problems – any suggestion on where I might be able to find a better selection of cozy mystery audiobooks?”

Linda, my husband and I are members of audible.com, and have enjoyed listening to many different authors: Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers, Ellis Peters, Ruth Rendell, Alexander McCall Smith, and I just discovered that they have Simon Brett and Sister Carol Anne O’Marie in their library. The good news is that they have  just started adding Carola Dunn, Monica Ferris, and Dorothy Gilman.

My daughter came to my aid and sent me the following:

“Here’s that info on books for the blind:
http://www.loc.gov/nls/
To qualify, she has to show that she’s got vision that makes it so she can’t read.”

I went to the site, and under the “Search the Catalog” area they actually use Mary Higgins Clark for the example of an author. It looks like you’ll have to spend some time going through the site, but it does look promising.

It’s not enough that they make audio books of Cozy Mysteries, locating them is the difficult part of the equation. Do any of you have ideas for locating audio books of Cozy Mystery authors? Please post a comment…

Need Help Identifying Mystery Book Series with Pix & Smoky Mountains…

July 24, 2010

OK, Cozy Mystery site readers >>> I am (again!!!) asking for your help. I have received two requests for help in identifying two mystery series. (As you all know… since I have repeatedly written about it… When I started the site I ONLY had pages for authors I was familiar with… authors who I read and enjoyed. Now, however, with all of the recommendations from site readers about authors who they think belong on the site, I am no longer familiar with all of them. And, let’s be honest… I would have to be a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Course to have read all of the authors on the site!)

Getting back to my requests…

Gayle writes: “… They are set up around the Smoky Mts. This man is rich, has a huge mansion, attends parties in Knoxville, and has these people that work for him to solve mysteries. During one of the mysteries he meets a woman, falls in love with her and brings her there to mansion.”

Here is Susan’s request: “…The mystery solver was a housewife, I think.  One of her neighbors was a large and growing Catholic family who named their children after saints.  One of the sons, named Pix after Pius X, helped her out in her mystery solving.  Do you know what this series is?”

Please post a comment if you have any helpful suggestions for Gayle or Susan.
