If you’re in the mood for a retro (1990s) good British mystery television series, then Wycliffe might fit the bill for you. It’s not “high-tech” or fast-paced, but it is Cozy.
Detective Superintendent Wycliffe is a quiet, intelligent policeman. He heads a small group of detectives who are very capable and loyal to him. He expects his team to follow orders, work together, and take the initiative. His subordinates are allowed to follow leads and make decisions about what they should do next.
The Wycliffe television series is a five season ITV network show which aired from 1994 to 1998, following a 1993 pilot. The main characters are Wycliffe (Jack Shepherd), DI Lucy Lane (Helen Masters), and DI Doug Kersey (Jimmy Yuill). All three of the leads are excellent in their portrayals.
The Wycliffe show is based on the mystery series by W. J. Burley. Each episode is a self-contained case Wycliffe’s team solves. (I especially like that there is a solution to each episode’s mystery. The series is set (and was filmed) in Cornwall. Expect to see beautiful scenic settings, crashing waves on rocky cliffs, green rolling hills, quaint villages. However, do not expect beautifully manicured lawns at large country estates where what seem like weekly fetes take place – like some other British television mystery series have. This series seems to be more realistic.
The Wycliffe television mystery series is available on BritBox. I recommend it to those of you who enjoy British mystery series that don’t feature a lot of adult situations.

Hello, I adore my BritBox shows; in that, I only really watch one program…Home Away from Home; I like to view the lovely homes/condos offered to be exchanged with one another. I do have a few other programs on BritBox like Are You Being Served, and my husband likes to watch the one with Daniel Craig; can’t recall what it’s called…MI6 or MI5 or such thing. I recommend that we all get hooked up to BritBox and it would be even more lovely if they could start having that Agatha Raisins series in their box set off offers. But not likely to happen. I have this on my wish list to someday purchase but no dough as yet. Stay safe and at home, everyone!

Ainee, I haven’t tried Home Away from Home – I’ll have to give it a shot! Thanks for the recommendation.

I watch the Wycliffe series when there is nothing else being offered. It is very slow paced and Wycliffe (the character) is a bit hard to figure out. Sometimes he comes off as kranky and sometimes warm and caring. I read quite a bit into the series a long time ago and I do recommend it.
I notice there are two new mysteries on Hallmark this season. “Francesca Quinn” and “Nikki and Nora”. I haven’t seen them yet.

Susan, thanks for the Hallmark update – I’ll have to see if it’s worth going back to doing entries on the channel…

Susan, thanks again. I just wrote my Hallmark Movies & Mysteries entry for October 2022. I’m glad you let me know about these two new shows. I’m hoping that the network continues to offer more. (I’ll be posting it very soon.)

Please continue to post about BritBox and AcornTV. It’s very helpful to have someone point out series as there’s so many from which to choose.
