Back In San Antonio…

November 17, 2023

DC5

My husband and I just got back from visiting our daughter, her husband, and their three and a half year old daughter.

We had a great time in the Washington, D.C. area. One of the excursion we always take when we’re out there is a visit to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It’s a terrific zoo — and always reminds me of the days our daughter and son were itty-bitty little ones. (My husband was stationed in the D.C. area years ago.) We love that zoo!

While my husband and I had a great time during our ten day visit, AND while we miss the three of them, it will be a lot less hectic when the two of us settle back into our laid-back, familiar routine. And, it will be good to see our son (and our “puppy” Cocoa) again.

BUT — I already miss the hustle and bustle of having a three year old in the house. Thank goodness we have our weekly portal visits!

I’m too old for most of the hustle and bustle. We have eleven grandchildren. Eleven because the eldest grandson got married a couple of years back. From there they go from high school graduates down to the 3rd grade. Seven girls and four boys. We spend a lot of time visiting since they’re all within a ten mile radius to our home.

Nora, that sounds both incredibly busy and fulfilling! I certainly wish our own grandchild lived a bit closer to home…

Hi Danna. I didn’t realize you lived in San Antonio. I recently was back in SA for a month. I still have family and friends there but am now back at home in Colorado. I had been going to do a book signing up in Comfort but the library up there is still in the process of remodeling.

Vikki, yes, we’ve been in San Antonio for longer than the site has existed. I’m sorry to hear that your local appearance was cancelled.

I just wanted to comment on your post. My husband was also stationed in the DC area years ago. Probably longer ago then yours was. We also visited the Maryland Zoo. When we were there we saw a white tiger and the real Smokey the bear. I really love looking back at the memories of that time. Thank you for sharing your memories. You brightened my day! Jeannie H

Jeannie, we were only in DC for a few years, but they happened to be at the right time in our childrens’ lives to be some of the most fulfilling in our lives.

You were in my next of the woods. I live in Central Maryland. I was born and raised here. Glad you enjoyed your visit. πŸ™‚

Meezan, thanks! It really brought back a lot of memories, though forming new ones with our granddaughter was definitely the highlight.

Dear Danna: So glad you got to visit Family before the hectic holidays!
I remember being in San Antonio when I was stationed at Corpus Christi NAS. I took the River walk boat ride and at Thanksgiving time it was magical. So was the Alamo and I got to see them both. What a treat.

So far, I have revisited Anne Perry’s Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series and in the more modern times, Peggy Ehrhart’s Knit and Nibble series of the first three. Waiting for the next one, Knitmare on Beech Street and she has 2 more coming out after that. But just reading her earlier Knit and Nibble books is a treat.

I just finished Maggie Sefton’s Fit to be Tied and Yarn Over Murders. I’m going to start the earlier books in that series as well.

Happy Holidays to all the readers on this site.

Hope you and hubby and Cocoa have a good, safe and happy Holiday.

PamB, she’s a bit young for that so far! But we certainly enjoy all the other entertainment she provided.

Glad you had a good time! My relatives lived in the Washington D.C. area. Washington is the only big city I’ve visited. We lived in Baltimore for about a year when I was a baby but I have almost no memory of that time. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mom and Dad took us to the zoo if it was there in 1961-1962. It’s always nice to come home and relax, though.

Marion, actually, the Maryland Zoo is quite old for an American institution – I believe it was founded before 1900! So it wouldn’t be surprising at all if you had been there as “recently” as the 1960s.
