Veterinary Theme Mysteries & Veterinarian Theme Mysteries

October 15, 2007

I want to go ahead and finish up the cozy mystery series with animal themes I started a while back with the Cat Cozy Mysteries, Dog Cozy Mysteries, Bird and Bird Watching Cozy Mysteries, and Pet Store and Pet Sitting Cozy Mysteries. This blog will feature the (cozy) mystery authors on the site who happen to have veterinarian sleuths.

Lydia Adamson writes three series. The Lucy Wayles series involves a librarian, the Alice Nestleton series features an actress and sometimes cat-sitter, and the third series revolves around Dr. Dierdre Quinn Nightingale, veterinarian. This veterinarian mystery sets place in New York.

The Reigning Cats and Dogs Cozy Mystery Series is written by Cynthia Baxter, and features (former) Dr. Jessica Popper, veterinarian. This series also takes place in New York.

Claudia Bishop is better known for her Hemlock Falls Cozy Mystery Series, but she recently began writing a series that involves a veterinarian  in the cozy mystery series entitled The Casebooks of Dr. McKenzie.

Edie Claire writes the Leigh Koslow Mystery Series. While Leigh is not a veterinarian, her father is. Every once in a while Leigh works as a tech at her dad’s office. Also, the second book features a zoo vet and setting.

Laura Crum writes the Gail McCarthy Mystery Series which features an equine veterinarian…

Abigail Deuel: Mandy Bell DVM Mystery Series

Linda O. Johnston writes the Pet Rescue Mystery Series which features an animal advocate who runs a pet rescue agency…

Georgette Livingston‘s veterinarian series features Dr. Jennifer Gray. This series is set in Nebraska, and involves many capers!

Allana Martin writes the Death of a ***** Mystery Series which features a sleuth and her veterinarian husband.

Betty Webb pens the Gunn Zoo Mystery Series, which features a zookeeper…

The last author in this category is Karen Ann Wilson. Technically, her sleuth isn’t a veterinarian… Samantha Holt is a veterinary technician who resides in Florida. Even though she isn’t a full-fledged veterinarian, she can still sleuth with the best of them!

(Obviously there are other veterinarian-theme mysteries by other authors… I have only included the authors who I have on the site. If you know of any other cozy mystery authors who write veterinarian-themed novels… please write me a comment so that I can include them.)

Thanks, Danna, for all the work on the site. It is amazing how many different ways there are to sort cozy mystery books! I wonder if all genres of mystery books have expanded so fast in recent years.

Anyway, I really enjoy reading your blog, and I use your list all the time – especially when it is time to reload my Audible.Com player. I don’t know how I could get along without it now!

Martin, That’s what the site is here for… to help people get their books so that they can read them chronologically.

Thank you for the kind words…

I really love your site. I print the lists so I can keep tabs on new books coming out, which ones I have read, etc. I noticed you do not have one listed. Gemma Halliday. She wrote Spying in High Heels, Killer in High Heels, Undercover in High Heels and coming soon, Alibi in High Heels.

    Sheila,

I’m glad you are enjoying the site. I try to write some of my blogs so that they contain information that site readers find useful. So, I’m glad you do just that!
And, thanks for the recommendation… I will add Halliday to my list of authors to post….

I have enjoyed another series involving a horse veterinarian: the Gail McCarthy mystery series by Laura Crum. Titles include Cutter (1994), Hoofprints (1996), Roughstock (1997), Roped (1998), Slickrock (1999), Breakaway (2001), Hayburner (2003), Forged (2004), Moonblind (2006), Chasing Cans (2008). Set in Santa Cruz county, California, the stories are suspenseful and very realistic. Interesting view of a horsey lifestyle.

Betty Webb has a new series about a zookeeper living on a houseboat on the central coast of California. The first book is The Anteater of Death.

Just wanted to drop a note, I’ve been a fan well over a year now! I belong to a couple of audiobook clubs and I have learned so many new authors/series thanks entirely to you!!

You have added a lot of joy to my life, taken out a lot of hit and misses and given me an endless list of books to listen to!! Unfortunately there are fewer of the cozy books that make it to audio but the ones I have found and listened to I love!!

Sometimes I go by themes, sometimes just by alphabet, your site is AMAZING!! I don’t know how you do it but I am so happy you do!!

    Hugs!
    Linda from Texas

    Hi Linda,

Thank you for all of the kind words about the site.

I know exactly what you mean when you say that fewer of the Cozies can be found on audio. I sure wish that would change! We belong to audible.com and I find that is very true. A lot of the Cozy series I follow aren’t represented >>> The authors’ names aren’t even in the system.

I visited your site, and was reminded of when I was my daughter’s Daisy troop leader. That was one fun year of arts and craft-ing!

Also, I see that your Sprite was born exactly fifteen years after ours… to the day!

Lynn, I am coming up empty on this one. The only two Black Labs I can remember are the two listed above… J. F. Englert’s and Spencer Quinn’s AND those certainly don’t sound like the one you are thinking about. Hopefully someone else will know the answer.

I read a funny book years ago about a French crime-solver who travels with his dog and an inflatable dog cage.
I would love to be reminded of the title and author. It may have been a short series. Thanks.

Would that be Monsieur Pamplemousse? He’s a food critic/detective.

I see there are a few with the theme of pet rescues but there are not many. Is there a list of authors who writes animal rescues and the cozy mysteries that go with them?

Linda O Johnston writes the barkery and biscuits mystery series. the series is set in Maycomb Heights CA. and features Carrie, who runs a dog and human bakery combined with her dog Biscuit, and she is also a part-time vet tech. There are 5 books in the series. Recently listened to the 1st one on Audible, and highly enjoyed it! The narration was wonderful, as well as the story! The series is called Barkery and Biscuits mystery series.
