Veteran’s Day Wishes…

I hope that this Veteran’s Day finds you all well. Although my father has been gone for more than several years, it’s on our patriotic days that I seem to remember him the most. Not one of the “red, white, and blue” days passes that I don’t have him in the back of my mind >>> all day. 

I was not aware of the changes this day underwent before it became known as Veteran’s Day (previously being known as Armistice Day, in honor of those who died during  World War I). I’m particularly glad that we have these days to honor those of our men and women who have given so much of themselves to ensure the rest of us can live the free lives that we do.

  1. My first grader grandson’s school had a Veteran’s Day program this morning to honor our past and present veterans. His sentences were about ‘our heroes’. My sentiments exactly. Am thankful schools still teach about patriotism, service, and sacrifices that so many have made for our freedom.

  2. My Dad was an Air Force Pilot. I totally agree, we should be honoring those who served. Unfortunately, it seems as if the country’s sense of pride and patriotism is greatly diminished now. Many changes in our country in a very short time and not positive ones – right up front is Americans putting the US down and laughing and cheering when celebs say demeaning things in public. We do a lot of foreign travel. So many of the things residents of foreign countries would bemoan to us are being forced into our lives here. They are not the things our fathers fought for in wars. I’d like to see us become proud of the USA again – we are the greatest country in the world,. (Hopefully, we’ll continue to be).

  3. Danna, Along with my sister and her husband, DH and I went to a Golden Corral last night for supper. That chain offered a free supper to all veterans. We frequent this place quite often so we felt that my brother-in-law and DH were both eligible for this offer. Both of these men had served in US Air Force during the Viet Nam era.
    This place was packed with the veterans. Some came with spouses and some with what seemed to me to be whole family. Some came with small groups with other veterans. Quite a few came just on their own. What a reception these veterans were given from this company.!! This chain can really pat themselves on their backs for what they did for these people yesterday.
    Although this place was very crowded the atmosphere in the place was a happy, friendly one. What a good time we had. Since the place was so full of people complete strangers shared tables. It was great!!
    Since I grew up during the Viet Nam era, I can well remember the treatment our veterans received once they started to return back home. I have several close relatives, including two brothers who served in that war. This has got to be one of the darkest times in our history. But hopefully those vets will take days like yesterday and accept our apologies for the wrong we did.
    Most of this country does indeed honor our vets.
    I have always believed that without the sacrifices these men, women as well as their families made over the last more than 200 years we wouldn’t be the country, (good and bad) that we are today.
    I don’t know how many actual vets read this blog of yours Danna, but I hope there are enough that do and that they will accept my sincere thanks.

    • Linda C, our local “what’s happening around San Antonio” show mentioned several restaurants that were going to be honoring our vets yesterday. What a wonderful thing for them to do.

  4. My son is a Viet Nam veteran – went right out of high school to serve his country. Even before that just a picture of the tomb of the ‘unknown soldier’ brought tears to my eyes thinking of everyone who loved and missed him as we did our own. God bless them and their loved ones and the ones now serving wherever they are.

  5. Danna, My father was among the first American soldiers to reach France during World War 1 as he was part of the Yankee Division. Every day I think of him and the other brave veterans who have enabled us to live in freedom. My brother left high school in 1943 to join the Navy and my husband served for 35 years in the Marine Corps Reserve. As a constant reminder of my father; however, I have his picture in his uniform from somewhere in France in 1918. It is my screen saver on my computer so I can never forget.
