Well, you would think the weather is getting nicer… and it might be where you live… but here in San Antonio, aka the Land Seasons Forgot, it is still at least 90 degrees every day lately. So I hope the rest of you are enjoying the beginning of Fall, but out here it looks like we’ll be indoors and enjoying tv mystery movies for a while longer!
I’m posting the Turner Classic Movies channel mysteries that I think are definitely worth looking at (plus some others from my favorite actors and actresses…) The biggest marathon this month for mystery fans is the Torchy Blaine series on the 21st. There will also be a lot of Christopher Lee films this month, including marathons of both the Fu Manchu series and the Dracula series. I’m also a fan of the Dr. Kildare series, which will be showing on the 7th – while not a mystery series, I do enjoy this series very much.
I’ve been having even more trouble than usual lately trying to keep up with the Hallmark Channel’s mystery schedule. So I’ve decided to at least highlight their upcoming big movie premiers going foward (though in this case I’ve already discussed these in greater detail in another post). I hate to do this, as I know some people really enjoy looking at the Hallmark material, but it is just so much work considering how Hallmark doesn’t really schedule an entire month at a time.

Merrilee says
Oh, WOW!! What a wonderful lineup!! Thrilled to see it. Halloween Day is chock-full of fun movies, and the whole month is full of great ones, too. My attention was IMMEDIATELY attracted by the inclusion of the original “The Haunting,” starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom (at least two showings that I saw). That has been a special favorite of many of my family members. Several years ago I read that it was in the top 5 of the scariest movies of all time, and there is no blood shed, nor ghosts seen on screen. TCM and HMM!! How delightful. I will have a terrific October movie watching experience. I can’t wait to tell my family. I’ve been seeing ad’s for the upcoming HMM NEW movies on that channel for a couple of weeks now. Grateful to see their lineup here, and the TCM ones CAN’T be BEAT!! I’m excited at how much fun there is to come. I love the older movies. Never the slasher ones. Never the horror ones. Just these GREAT older ones. THANK YOU many times over for this information.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Merrilee, I think I know what mean about horror movies – sometimes “less is more” is certainly more appropriate when it comes to scary movies, and the older movies are generally better about that sort of thing! I hope you have a fun Halloween holiday season to look forward to!
KG says
Thank you for this extensive list. I look forward to the October Hallmark movies.
Last week it was in the low to mid 70’s here, when Fall arrived the temps climbed. We were in the high 90’s yesterday and about the same today. Wednesday we will be in the high 80’s and then down to the low 70’s. I don’t have a/c, so the 90’s are brutal. Hope you can keep cool!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
KG, you’re welcome!
It is finally getting a bit nicer here in San Antonio >>> except that it is coming at the end of a lot of rain. Here’s hoping the coolish weather stays when the storm moves on.
Lydia says
So much to watch on TV this October! I’m thrilled to see a new Gourmet Detective mystery on HMM! They’re my top fav new TV movie mystery; with the Murder, She Baked coming in a close second! I enjoy them all, though, so new ones are a treat! TCM always has lots of my favorite “seasonal” movies with “The Haunting” and the Christopher Lee films.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Lydia, it’s certainly a good month to be a seasonal horror movie fan in general, even more for fans of Christopher Lee specifically! I hope the new Gourmet Detective mystery is good – I’ve heard good things about the first two by the same people but haven’t seen either yet.
NikkiL says
Some of my favorite old and new. Love Time after Time, Gaslight is amazing, the Thin Man movies were my favorites as a child, and for new I love Kellie Martin in anything and the Aurora Teagarden mysteries. Good month all around. And a favorite book is Wilkie Collins The Woman in White. Haven’t seen the movie but I love Alexis Smith.

NikkiL, it certainly does look like a good month’s worth of movies – I’m definitely going to be keeping my recording device busy. No idea when I’ll actually find time to watch all those movies though!

Thank you for listing the Hallmark Mysteries – I love them.

LK, you’re very welcome!

I love Halloween, and the line-up looks so neat!
And of course two of my THIN MAN movies are included, as well as Basil Rathbone’s HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES. Boy, they just don’t make them like that anymore.
Thank you for all your hard work in giving us the ‘head’s up’ on so many great movies & books!
Hugs from a much cooler Houston!

Petie, I’m definitely looking forward to Hound of the Baskervilles as well. That’s one movie I’m almost always sure to watch every time it comes around.

There’s one coming on Saturday the 1st called the irresistible blueberry farm. it is based on a book. I saw a Facebook post about it. Have not read the book and do not know the author’s name.

Ginger, thank you for telling us about this movie. I’m so glad you mentioned The Irresistible Blueberry Farm. I just looked it up, and see that it will be on the regular Hallmark channel. It looks like it will be a fun movie to watch. I have been a fan of Shirley Jones since seeing her in the movie Oklahoma!, and can’t wait to see her in this.
Thanks, again!

As long as we have this list, I am curious about Caroline Graham mysteries. On this website, you list only seven books, yet the Midsomer Murders series has been going for many years now.
They both have the same characters but I wonder whether the TV programs are based on her real stories or just on the characters.

Hanna, it was a long time ago that I watched the first episodes of Midsomer Murders. I wrote an entry about the show back in 2008. Back then I said the episodes were “inspired by” the Caroline Graham mysteries. Maybe somebody who has read the books recently (or who still remembers) can tell us if the plots in the books are used in any of the shows.
