If you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes, then be sure you tune in to the Turner Classic Movies channel (TCM) on Wednesday (July 3) for a marathon of mystery movies that feature Sir Conan Doyle’s great detective. I was surprised to find out that all of the movies don’t feature the famous Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce acting duo! These will be followed by two Dick Tracy mystery movies.
Something I have noticed (particularly this month!) is the amount of movies from the late 1950s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s TCM is now showing. Even though I list the “newer” mystery movies, I generally prefer movies from Hollywood’s Golden Age (earlier than the 1960s) over these. Most of the time I simply don’t watch them – unless they feature a favorite actor or actress. I sometimes wonder if lots of other people prefer the older movies. I started watching TCM years ago, when Robert Osbourne just-about WAS TCM. Back then the channel rarely showed these “newer” movies…
Either way, here’s the July 2019 Turner Classic Movies channel‘s mystery movie line-up:

This is a wonderful list. Thanks
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Fran, you’re welcome!
Lydia M says
We haven’t had TCM since we had to cut back on our cable bill last year. I, too, prefer the older films (I’m okay with 1960’s films, also). After Robert Osborn passed away, I think that created a big hole for TCM. I guess I would say 1970’s films are now okay to show, but 1980’s? Hmmm. But I still miss my TCM with their uncut films and some great movies.
Some films on the list I recommend include Laura, North by Northwest, Gilda, and 12 Angry Men. I also have a soft spot for the Rathbone-Bruce Sherlock Holmes films.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Lydia, I’ve certainly heard from more than a few people who cut down on cable bills and lose TCM, as well as people who live outside of the United States and just don’t have access to begin with.
Zarayna Pradyer says
This is a magnificent list of films – thank you.
For me, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce will always be the definitive Holmes and Watson. They may not be as true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters as some versions, but they had more warmth and heart to lift us up.
Love all of the old black and white noir detectives. By the time the film was over, although I didn’t always understand who did what to whom and why, I still enjoyed the whole atmospheric world.
Also, remember the Thin Man series. Lovely, sophisticated and funny.
So many gems here – North by Northwest! Too many to mention but excellent.
Thank you.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Zarayna, I’m personally very fond of the Jeremey Brett version of Sherlock Holmes, but the Basil Rathbone version makes for a very close competition!
Merrilee says
Those are a lot of fun movies. I’m glad to see the list this month particularly. I don’t always have time to view the lists or even DVR the shows, but I did have time to go through the list tonight. I am pleased to see a Nancy Drew movie on the schedule. Those are always fun. And some Thin Man movies, which I try to watch however many times they are on. Thanks for the list (as always). I do plan to DVR and watch many of those. If I remember correctly, “The Gazebo,” which is scheduled for Monday, July 22 at 11:15 p.m., was another movie that was fun to watch. I can’t comment on all of them, but they all look promising.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Merrilee, you’re welcome – I’m glad that people find these lists so helpful in planning their recording schedule, or even just thinking back on old favorites!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Merrilee, I just watched The Gazebo that I had taped on my Sage (a now extinct type of DVR) and you’re right, it is fun to watch.
Merrilee says
That’s great, Danna. I’m glad you watched “The Gazebo” and enjoyed it, as I thought I had. I’ll be sure to DVR it.
Donna McLean says
Danna, until I saw this post I had no idea there was an actor named Ian Fleming (Dr Watson in The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes). For a minute there I thought it co-starred the writer, Ian Fleming! That would be an interesting portrayal, LOL. Learn something new every day.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Donna, that would certainly be an interesting pairing! I don’t know if Ian Fleming the author ever appeared in any movies, even the early James Bond ones.
Marlene says
I wish they would show Miss Marple, Hercule Poiroit, and Charlie Chan movies. Loved them! I can watch The Thin Man series over and over again. My DVR is and will be filling up!!
Marlene
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Marlene, those are all great movies that I’d love to see more often! Still, there’s a lot to enjoy on TCM.
Trish says
Thank you for posting TCM movies! I love the golden age mysteries but have seen virtually all of them. Now I look for 60’s-80’s mysteries. I enjoy comparing the fashion, furniture, architecture and attitude of the characters with the golden age era. Thanks for including these decades in your list.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Trish, you’re welcome! Though you should be thanking TCM for putting them up to begin with – I list whatever mystery related shows they plan on showing, regardless of decade.
