There are none that can compete with The Thin Man series. We own all of them but every time they are aired, I have to watch “Nick, Nora, & Asta”. William Powell was in “Life with Father” on Father’s Day and few actors can do the job that he did. His expressions are priceless and never fail to put a smile on my face! And Myrna Loy was perfect as Mrs. Charles. I’m on vacation the week those are on so I know I won’t be far from the sofa thoroughly enjoying my sweet iced tea in this hot humid Houston !!! Thanks, Danna, as always for your great updates.
Marienne says
Hi Petie!
Why? Oh why did you not use Danna’s ‘new’ word, ‘humidly’, in your description of Houston’s dreadful weather?!?
“Life with Father” is one of my favorite flics! Everything you said is true for me as well! But I also find it hysterically funny in a subtle way!
I feel the same way about the “Hardy” series as you do about the “Thin man” series & and I have the same experience w. them she did!
Take care,
Marienne
Petie says
Good morning, Marienne! Yes, ‘humidly’ is spot on here. I thought there was a hurricane when I got off work yesterday and it was still raining along with thunder & lightening this morning!! Of course it will be 90-something degrees too so you know how pleasant this will be. My hair looks like ‘frizz city’!!
I wish I had seen all the “Hardy” series. I’ve only seen a couple but love Mickey Rooney. Saw him in “Boys Town” with Spencer Tracy the other night; what a great little actor then.
Will definitely now have to catch up on the “Hardy” ones for sure!
Have a great week-end!
Petie
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Petie, I recently made it a point to watch all the Hardy movies, and I think they are delightful. I am absolutely astounded at Mickey Rooney’s acting skills.
Marienne says
Hi again Petie & Dana!
The 1st Andy Hardy movie is showing on TCM July 5th at 3:30 am PDT with, in addition to Mickey Rooney, the (IMO) brilliant Lionel Barrymore! Dana, please forgive me if I duplicated one of your listings.
I hope your weather improves & that no one suffers harm as a result of it. Just so’s you know, the cost of living in the perfect Mediterranean weather of the Bay Area of Northern California is incredibly high – I’m told that land in the Silicone Valley is 5 million dollars an acre! ‘Nuff said.
Petie says
Thanks so much for the ‘heads up’. Will record it for sure and look for others since I’m on vacation for a week to spend a birthday with my twin sister here. That’s how we celebrate: watch classic movies, TV series we’ve bought, and our sweet iced tea. Since Blue Bell ice cream isn’t available at the moment it will simply be ‘cake and…..’. You’d have to know Blue Bell to know the sadness in that statement!!
Marienne says
Danna Dear,
I think I know Bluebell because my husband got Blue Moon ice cream for our baby girl every time they went for a walk. She’d come home … blue! So if they made that flavor, then I know it. When it was no longer available in our neighborhood, we had the hardest time finding it.
I’m hoping it becomes available for you soon. You know, there are a lot of recipes online for popular, branded foods – have you checked out that possible source? Good luck & enjoy your celebration as best you can!
Marienne
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Marienne, actually Petie’s talking about the Blue Bell Creamery ice cream which has done a voluntary recall. I’m not sure if they’re a national ice cream brand, or not.
Marienne says
Oops! Sorry!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Marienne, your ice cream sounds like although it was messy, it was delicious. And what a delightful memory!
Marienne says
Thanks for the sweet thought, Danna!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Petie, I hope you and your sister have a great week celebrating your birthdays. Taking the week off sounds like a great idea for making your birthdays truly special. Happy Birthday to both of you!
Petie says
Thank you so much!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Marienne, my husband and I enjoyed certainly enjoyed our visit to your state. When we talk about perhaps moving to better weather, California is never on the table >>> the prices of little, itsy-bitsy cabana-sized houses is astounding!
Marienne says
You’re telling me, Danna! It cost $699.00 to register my car the first time! I could say more, but you have the idea. I’m told land in the Silicone Valley is 5 million dollars an acre! I don’t know anyone who’s moving here – I may be moving away! Only thing, to stay is NOT good money after bad.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Petie, my husband and I watched There’s Always a Woman just by chance last night. I had taped it off of the TCM channel, and Robert Osborne’s introduction said that it was made to be like the Thin Man movies. As much as I love Melvyn Douglas movies, this falls a little short of the Thin Man series.
Petie says
Never heard of that one but will definitely give it a go. Another one you mentioned was The Kennel Club one with William Powell that I’ve never seen so I’ll record it too. He’s a ‘must see’ in everything!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Petie, since it was made in the 1930s, of course there is a drunk scene in the movie. I’m not crazy about those scenes, but there always seems to be at least one that supposedly is funny. Also, there is a “husband is the boss and can do anything attitude”, but, let’s face it, there is usually one of those scenes in these old movies, too…
Marienne says
Hi Danna!
I can only imagine that any weather in a state like Texas is horrible! I say ‘like’ Texas because I have an unsubstantiated dislike for, but, at the same time, fascination with that dreadful & huge state – I know, I know that my new home state of California is even larger, but, hey! it’s California!
Anyway, I’m from Chicago & I can relate to your misery, but must point out that until 700 people die in a heat wave, well, you really haven’t experienced the worst of humidly heat – there! Now it’s a legitimate word!
About 25 years ago I trepidatiously started using a made-up word – conversate’. Later I found out that the major dictionaries annually removed words from it and … added new words to it! I was off! To a slow & cautious start – smile. When I have felt the need for new word, I feel quite comfortable & adventurous doing just that! So, Danna, have at it! And no, I’ve never checked to see whether any of my inventions have made it into any dictionaries. By the way, I’ve found that when one thinks of a brilliant & unique idea, there are a small number of people (less than one per cent) throughout the world who have the same or similar idea at around the same time. I think this is something the world observed w. the invention of the telephone & electricity.
On to the flics! You’re on the ball (pun intended!) “Ball of Fire” & “Separate Tables” are absolutely the best movies! Top notch! “Ball of Fire” is a rollicking comedy & one might want to DVR it because you’ll want to watch it again & share it w. friends & family! “Separate Tables” is a poignant love story with suspense sans crime & all ’round great acting. I hope your readers are able to get TCM – it’s rarely included in basic cable packages & although it’s usually in the next tier of packages, the price is often too much &/or not worth it for many pensioners.
Finally & at last! “Night of the Hunter” has been a lifetime favorite as has “The Long Goodbye”! The first is a flat-out classic & what you say about Mr. Mitchum is so, so true. “The Long Goodbye” is a quirky flic w. some comedy splendidly & flawlessly combined w. some shocking, but tolerable, brutality, twists, turns & a surprise ending. Elliot Gould is great! Nina van Pallandt is a sensual ice-princess & Sterling Hayden a bear of a man consumed by his genius! I can’t recall the name of his doctor, but he is a guy cast 180° against type and, because of this, one of the scariest characters in the movie. This is a good one to DVR For the above reasons, but also because it’s a fast-moving flic & one is sure to find delightful things one missed on upon subsequent viewings – plus, it’s just so daggone good, that you’ll want to see it again for the sake of seeing it again. Enjoy!
Best,
Marienne
Susan Sundwall says
Great list, Danna! I love it that you post graphics with some of them – especially delighted with the older ones.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Susan, TCM is probably my most-used channel! I love these old movies!
Patty says
Thanks for making this list! I was recently in the mood to watch some The Thin Man movies and now I have the chance.
