If you like the old black & white Sherlock Holmes movies, then make sure to set your DVRs on Wednesday (October 5). There are a few Basil Rathbone movies airing that day. I was really pleased to see them listed (since I really like Basil Rathbone) in October. Usually Turner Classic Movies features mostly Halloween-type movies during the Halloween month.
And, speaking of “Halloween-type” movies… I know I have mentioned (several times) how much I like watching the old Dracula/Frankenstein/etc movies during October. Well, on Tuesday (October 25) Turner Classic Movies will be airing several Christophen Lee Dracula movies. I usually watch them every October. October is my month for Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, & Peter Cushing movies. (Yes, I know this is a mystery site, but October just brings this love of old light “horror” movies out in me. I especially like the really campy ones. (I don’t like the more recent horror/slasher movies!)

Thank you for this treasure trove of classic, mysterious, and spooky films – I would’ve missed out on them. I have two suggestions to add. The final novel by Roger Zelazny, “A Night in the Lonesome October”, is a delightful homage to many characters, literary and otherwise, including Dracula, Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper, and Sherlock Holmes. And I’ve never forgotten the moments of eerie loveliness captured in the Japanese film Kuroneko (The Black Cat), since I saw it at the Life of Animals in Japanese Art exhibit at the National Gallery.
