The Jury’s In… or Should I Say Out?

June 20, 2013

I’m not sure how I feel about this, but I wasn’t selected to sit on a jury yesterday. It is the second time that I actually got named as a possible, but it’s also the second time that the parties were able to determine a deal before the voir dire process began. On the one hand I’m glad that I won’t have to drive to and from downtown every day during the two rush hours, but I’m sort of sorry I won’t be part of the judicial process.

(Not at all related to being on a jury >>> It was nice coming home and finding that my husband had missed me!)

Danna, you and I are two peas in a pod…we sure think alike! lol

I learned a valuable lesson today. Hubby had cataract surgery so I had lots of ‘waiting’ time. I didn’t take my book because I wanted to finish up a crochet project instead. Yep, you guessed it, I forgot my crochet hook…..sure wished I’d brought my book!

Am heading to SA next weekend….is it hot there, yet? LOLOL

Cathy, I don’t know how long cataract surgery takes, but that must have been terrible. I guess at that point I would actually welcome a television set blaring!

Have a great time in San Antonio next weekend. Cathy, you won’t be “LOLOL”-ing about our humid heat – after spending a day walking on the Riverwalk, that’s for sure!

Cathy, Do this RIGHT NOW, while you are thinking about it—go drop a few crochet hooks into the bottom ( I Know, I know!! a lost item zone) of your purse. I did that and now I am not without at least crochet hook.
I used to keep at least one or two paperback books in my purse for those long wait times. Now I have those paperback books as well as a few crochet hooks. I appsolutely Hate having to sit without anything to do. Maybe this is because all of those years that I worked in factories.
I don’t always keep my Kindle in my purse because I am afraid that I will leave it somewhere. Plus, most times my Kindle needs charging at the most time I want to read something.
Oh, by the way, there is a national store in my area that sells small skeins of yarn for only a dollar that I can drop into the bottom of my purse also. This is real handy. A hook isn’t any good to me at all if I don’t have any yarn!!

Linda C, I wondered about how much entertainment it was going to be without the yarn! (Until I read your last paragraph.)

Some years ago, one of my work friends decided to get a divorce. Her husband subpoenaed me, her best friend and her parents to testify for him. It was an interesting day and half in court.

Billie, let me get this straight >>> You were friends with the woman and her husband wanted you to testify for him? That would have been an interesting day and a half!

I’ve served on two juries – one civil and one criminal – and it is a fascinating process. I think I learned the most from the civil, which was a malpractice case that went all the way to jury deliberation instructions before the parties settled (the judge took great care to explain at all times why he was doing things like sending the jury out or allowing testimony or not allowing evidence). The criminal was actually a little unnerving since it was an assault case where the prosecution witnesses “mysteriously” suffered memory lapses upon being sworn in – a little too much like my favorite mysteries for my taste! It was really interesting to see the differences between reality and television (though this was when ‘Law and Order’ was in its infancy, so my reference point was Perry Mason).

The only thing that bothered me was that I felt reading murder mysteries while waiting to be called for jury selection might be off-putting to the attorneys (and I really wanted to serve at least once, just to see what it was like), so I had to read some pretty boring stuff in the name of civic responsibility

Julia, I wonder if attorneys would be turned-off by someone reading a murder mystery. Nowadays, attorneys have it rough >>> since so many potential jurors expect the high-tech, preposterous science of CSI type shows.
