The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.

March 16, 2008

The Adventures Of Brisco County, Jr.: The Complete Series Does anybody remember the 1990s series called “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.“? Well I did, and I’m glad!

This past week my husband and I were very lucky to have both of our children with us, and there were a few times that we had a limited amount of time to watch a television show together. We have actually started to watch some old shows that we have… some from the 1990s (X-Files, Brisco County) and some from as far back as the 1950s (Alfred Hitchcock and Leave It to Beaver)… Yep, we enjoy all of those (very different) shows…

Getting back to The Adventures of Brisco County, Junior…  Bruce Alexander is terrific as the Harvard-educated bounty hunter who, each week, rights the wrongs of the west while trying to avenge the murder of his father (the great Brisco County… without the “junior”).  Along for the fun are a rival bounty hunter, Lord Bowler (Julius Carry) and a very city-fied attorney who is his liaison with the company that employs him. There, of course, are several other very memorable characters who show up from week to week…. John Astin plays an inventor (of sorts) and Kelly Rutherford plays a delightful saloon singer. Of course, Comet… Brisco’s horse is one of the best characters who I am always eager to see and who ends up saving Brisco (and the day) more than once!

I think that what has truly amazed me is how well the show has held up for us. We watched the show with our children when it first aired in the early 1990s when they were both preteens, and here we are now… watching it again… and enjoying it! Unfortunately this Fox Network show only aired for one season, so there are only 27 episodes. But, the good news is that the show doesn’t feature laugh tracks to let you know when the dialog is funny… you won’t need the canned laughter, even though you will probably find yourself smiling several times during each episode.

I LOVED watching Brisco County Jr. Bruce Campbell is a honey and I really like watching his appearances in Brisco, Xena Warrior Princess, etc and all of his movies.
I have Brisco County Jr on DVD, so I can watch anytime I want.

    Vickie…

Isn’t this show fun?! My husband suggested that I write a blog about the show, but I wasn’t quite sure if it "fit in" to the site…. But, then I thought>>> if we enjoy this show so much, there must be others out there who haven’t seen it yet and who would definitely enjoy it also.

I’m glad you confirmed that view!

Did you ever see the Campion mysteries with Peter Davidson? Its been a long time since I have but I remember them as reasonably cozy. Some of the Jeeves and Wooster stories had a touch of mystery too. Hard to say if something that silly should count, but in any case you should enjoy it. Yes, its too bad A&E has changed so much. Loved the old mysteries. Loved the Jane Austin adaptations too.

    Hi Nunnya,

I had already written my Campion blog, so went ahead and posted it today. I’m glad you reminded me to get that done.

As for the Jeeves and Wooster shows… we loved them. The two actors were absolutely ideal for the parts, weren’t they? Thanks for reminding me about them also.

I loved Brisco County, Jr and Hercules which Bruce Campbell would show up on. I think they were produced by the same guy, who was a friend of Bruce Campbell, and would have his brother on the Hercules show. He is producing shows now. I asked our library to get a copy of Brisco County, Junior.

    Elizabeth,

It looks like there are a few of us who enjoy the Brisco shows. We were disappointed when they went off of the air. But, isn’t it great that we can enjoy them all over again!?!

I have to agree with you on this one – I adored this show when it was on the air and ran right out to buy the DVDs as soon as they were for sale. They are the perfect viewing fare for a lazy Saturday morning while you enjoy that second cup of coffee – it’s just like the old Saturday afternoon matinees.

The Brisco series was such fun. Although it’s intended to be an old-time western, I love the sly little references to modern-day things–like the episode with the inventor (played by John Astin), who’s building a zeppelin, which Brisco refers to as his “stairway to heaven”! Very cute. It’s good to see that Bruce Campbell is still going strong as Sam Axe in Burn Notice.

Not only did I love this show because of Bruce Campbell, but I also loved another one of his shows, Jack of All Trades.
