OK, OK >>> I realize that some of you are not television fans, and that you would rather be hearing about books. But, I have one more thing to add, which I found while looking around for the upcoming Jesse Stone movie.
Here’s some good news for fans of Tess Gerritsen‘s Jane Rizzoli mystery books: TNT is going to be airing Rizzoli & Isles, a new medical examiner/police procedural television show very soon >>> starting some time this summer.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this non-cozy Gerritsen mystery series, it features a detective (Jane Rizzoli) and a medical examiner (Maura Isles) who solve mysteries in Boston, Massachusetts. The Jane Rizzoli role will be played by Angie Harmon (remember her from Law & Order?) and Sasha Alexander (NCIS) in the part of Maura Isles. Lorraine Bracco will be in the show playing Harmon’s mother… which is great news for me, since I enjoy her work so much.
I don’t have a lot of details, other than they are filming the show, and TNT has ordered ten episodes.
TNT has “gone outside of the box” with several of their shows, and I LOVE that! It seems that the TNT higher-ups don’t believe that shows’ strong leading roles have to be carried by men. I watch several of the TNT shows with female leads (one of which is The Closer with Kyra Sedgwick) and am absolutely delighted that in this day, when we are telling our young women that yes, they can and should be majoring in fields like engineering, physics, and math, that TNT is willing to put their production money where society’s mouth is! (Does that make sense? Probably not, but I think you can get my drift…)

I’m really excited about this new show. I love the series. My husband has been sad ever since Sasha Alexander left NCIS (bitter about “Kate got ….”, don’t want to leave a spoiler). I’ll definitely give this a chance. I love The Closer too.

I can’t wait to see this new show. Tess has more information on her website.

I definitely know what you mean! Unfortunately, many young women are still getting the message that the fields of science and math are more for the guys, so if television can present some strong women in those kinds of roles, I’m cheering! My 29-year-old daughter (who is now getting a master’s in hydrology, after spending time in public relations jobs) says she felt discouraged in high school from pursuing science, and so took the journalism route. Only now is she feeling confident and empowered enough to follow the science she loved before high school. Our educational system definitely lags behind our verbal claims of giving girls equal access and support.

I LOVE The Closer!!!! I hope I like this.

When is this show starting??
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Rizzoli & Isles (based on Tess Gerritsen’s mystery novels) is debuting next Monday (July 12) on TNT… right after The Closer starts its new season.
I am really looking forward to a line-up of shows with strong women as their sleuths. (I guess it takes a cable network to do that!)
Suzy says
In my opinion, The Closer is the best show on television so I’m looking forward to Rizzoli & Isles. I also like “In Plain Sight” another strong woman role.

Suzy,
You’ve got great taste in shows!
I love In Plain Sight… Was very sorry to see the season end last night…

WOW –
I just happened to find this “blog.” I have never done and/or answered/replied to anything like this…SO please, excuse this novice to using this type of interaction…
I have to say – how refreshing to find others with similar feelings, likes & opinions similar to mine!
I have LOVED THE CLOSER from day 1…in fact – have bought all of the available series & watch them late @ nite!!! Practically have them memorized! SO, I was thrilled when I saw that Rizzoli & Isles was going to follow Kyra (don’t you just LOVE her???!! – both publicly as well as privately!! And, her daughter, Sosie Bacon, what a lovely young woman she has -It certainly appears that she is as talented as her parents!!).
While, unfortunately, I had never read any of Tess Gerritsen’s novels – I have NOW become a NEW fan!! Once I saw Angie was to be on the show – I KNEW I would have to watch!! And, thanx to whomever noted that Maura Isles is played by Sasha Alexander. I KNEW I had seen her before – but could not place her – until you stated “NCIS.”…WOW – she is really a knock-out as a blonde & what a great actress!!!….She plays BOTH roles extremely convincingly!!
NOW – since you all seem to agree that we need (and seem to be finally getting) more assertive, smart, yet, beautiful in MORE ways than just “outwardly” type women playing great roles!!! And, I agree – “Plain Sight” was ALSO a powerful, entertaining, as well another great role-model-type show!! Why did they take IT off?? (I know – ratings!!! sad to say!)
It’s so refreshing to see that women CAN be strong & “outspoken” without being the “B-word” & not just by “putting men down” – like so many do in the proverbial “sit-coms.” That seems to be how the networks see THEIR women in “leading” roles. AND, trust me, I am “no-spring-chicken!” I’m into my 60’s, but enjoy great leading roles & characters when I see or read them!!)
Now – since this blog appears to be about books & mysteries….have any of you read and/or heard of J.A. Jance’s books??? I discovered Jance via her “heroine”…a sheriff in Cochise, AZ county (a border county in my state).
Sheriff Joanna Brady received her post after her deputy sheriff husband was killed & then she was voted in as “permanent” sheriff. I think THAT series would make a GREAT “made-for-TV”-movie” – much like the Jessie Stone series (don’t you just LOVE Tom Selleck in that role???).
In addition to Sherrif Brady, Jance also has 3 other mystery series (each very different). Jance, herself is a “strong” woman who pulled herself up (read HER personal story) late in life, began writing & introduced the world to her 1st character: J.P. Beaumont (a male detective out of Seattle – where Jance also lives), and then she went on to introduce the Walker family (this series also deals with a very interesting American Indian heritage and, again, Jance grew up & taught in that part of AZ, as well.) Jance utilizes a lot of her own personal experiences in her books, while expanding each of her characters (all of whom are strong, smart, yet, “soft & caring” women – except for “J.P.”)
She has NOW introduced a new character, Ali Reynolds, a “former L.A. network anchor ( who was “let go” due to “age issues!!”). Ali returns “home” to Sedona, AZ (again – familiar territory for Jance)egis writing her feelings in a blog (new to that venue, as well) & due to these blogs – becomes embroiled in several murder mysteries!!
Anyway, again- thanx for allowing me to “chime in,” & voice my opinion. “Thanx” for all of your input….Please forgive me, if I have utilized this site wrongly.

Wow, Penny… Lots of similarities! And, your comment was indeed a great one!
Here’s the good news for all of us In Plain Sight fans… This is a direct quote from the USA channel: “Anxious to find out what’s going on with Mary and Marshall? We’ve got good news, In Plain Sight is returning for a fourth season in Spring 2011!” Yippee-dee-dooo!!! (I know that sounds corny, but that’s exactly how I feel about this great show’s return!)
I follow J. A. Jance‘s Joanna Brady and J. P. Beaumont series. Although neither of them are Cozy Mystery series, but i have a lot of non-Cozy series that I follow. I have not, however, tried her Walker Family or Ali Reynolds series.

Hi Danna
I loved the show “THE CLOSER” from the first show!!! All of the actors and actresses come together to make a fantastic show…….
Also I loved the RIZZOLI & ISLES show and was very disappointed when the show didn’t come back in the fall of 2010….
Also “IN PLAIN SIGHT”
These are strong women that stand out in their parts and show us the police women of today can and do put their lives on the line as well as the men cops.
I hope they are able to come back and entertain us because these shows are my favorites. smile. Well now I do like PBS the Mystery hour when I can find the channel, the night it is on, and what day……..for goodness sakes. grin.

Shirley, I really had high hopes for Rizzolie & Isles, and thought I was really going to like it. I stayed with it for a while >>> but just couldn’t get over a few things that really bothered me. So, I have to admit, I didn’t stay with the show until the end of that season.
As for The Closer and In Plain Sight… Wonderful shows!!!
Shirley says
Just finished a good mystery and I think she has written six police stories. In real life she is an FBI trained forensic artist, and has worked in law enforcement for 20 yrs as a police officer, detective, & hostage negotiator.
It’s called…….”THE BONE CHAMBER” and the author is Robin Burcell. This one came out last year…..I love her novels.
I hope you read her first one and that will “Knock your socks off” I had to finish so read her on a weekend. haha…..Actually I love mysteries….but not thrillers…and I like them fairly clean…..smile hugs
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Shirley, The Bone Chamber (Robin Burcell) isn’t a Cozy Mystery, is it? With her background in the FBI, and that title, it sounds like a thriller. I always enjoy it when I read something outside of my comfort level and find myself enjoying it…
Shirley says
Danna…You’re right it isn’t a Cozy…..but enjoyed it anyway.
At the time she had only written three police mysteries…..I had to tell her how much I enjoyed her books……and always thanked her for her talent……I never thought about it being a thriller……because from the first few pages I clicked and liked the way the she wrote.
So I say I don’t like thriller’s?………………….oops fell over my tongue on that one, didn’t I?
grin……
