Sue Grafton Will be Missed by Many

January 4, 2018

As much as I hate giving this sort of news at the end or beginning of a year, I must sadly address that Sue Grafton, the author of the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mystery Series, passed away on December 28, 2017, at the age of 77. Her works were very influential to all aspects of the mystery genre, and her loss will be felt by many.

Rest In Peace, Sue. Our sympathies go out to Sue’s family and friends.

So glad that you mention Sue. She was such a important voice in mystery books and women’s fiction. I have read all of her books and was eagerly awaiting the last one. Guess we will never know what Z is for zero was about. It’s a good time to go back and read all of her books. That is what I am planning to do.

At the advice of a local bookseller, in a SMALL store, I started reading Sue Grafton at “C”! I was back in in a couple of days to buy “A” & “B”! I always bought in hardcover after that, because I couldn’t wait! As time went on, I got a Kindle. I would pre-order, as I did with “Y” & then would read when I’d get to my daughter’s & would have time to just read and enjoy! She remained one of my favorites til the end, and I will REALLY miss her & her work! ??

I had the good fortune to meet Sue Grafton years ago at a Mystery Writers of America conference. She was just as smart, funny and charming as her heroine, Kinsey Milhone.
She shared that she used to be a TV producer, and the experience led her to vow she would never allow the Kinsey Milhone mysteries to be made into movies or TV shows.
“I would sooner sell my child into slavery,” she said – smiling, but quite serious.
God rest you, dear Sue, and thank you for the pleasure you gave to millions of devoted readers like me.

I know, how sad is that? And I cried when I read her family member’s comment, “The alphabet now ends with ‘Y’ “.

Yes, indeed. I had read them all and was looking forward to seeing how she ended it with “Z”. However, in the account I read, she never wanted a ghost writer to write for her, so, as her daughter has been quoted “the alphabet ends with Y”.

A is for Alibi is the first mystery book I read. I was hooked on mysteries after that. My prayers are with Sue’s family.

I wrote her a fan letter after I read Alibi. I received a note from her thanking me for reading it. Then every year I got a Christmas card and cute little items, promoting her new book.
I’m so very sad to hear of her passing.

I found Sue Grafton, at G is for Gumshoe. When I finished it, I went back to the store and bought A B C D E and F. I reread G in it’s proper order. I have been a devoted fan ever since, Whenever I have been asked who my favorite authors are, she was always mentioned. She has left us with her greatest gift and I will reread them all in her memory.

I also have read all of her books and some a second time since they were soo very good. I was eagerly awaiting for her ‘Z’ book to come out also, but hey that’s ok with it stopping at ‘Y’, it’ll just remind us of her more, at least it will for me. She will be greatly missed by all.

    RIP our dear friend!

It’s really sad, but I’m sort of glad the alphabet ends in Y. Now I can continue to make up possible scenarios for Kinsey, one of my favorite characters of all time. She lives on.
