Sewing Theme in Cozy Mystery Books

Sewing Theme in Cozy Mysteries

You know, I have themes for quilting, and knitting, crocheting, needlework, & needlecrafts, but it never occurred to me to have a sewing theme >>> until I was asked if there were any sewing themed Cozies. Hmmm, let me think…

Sewing Theme in Cozy Mystery Series:

Janet Bolin: Threadville Mystery Series

Melissa Bourbon (aka Misa Ramirez): Magical Dressmaking Mystery Series

Elizabeth Lynn Casey (aka Laura Bradford): Southern Sewing Circle Mystery Series

Amanda Lee (aka Gayle Trent & Gayle Leeson): Embroidery Mystery Series

Cate Price: Deadly Notions Mystery Series

Liz Trenow: The Forgotten Seamstress (not technically a mystery, but does include a mystery of sorts)

My theme page has lots of different Cozy Mystery themes. You might find a few themes that pique your interest. Here’s the Cozy Mysteries by Theme page on my site. Just click on the link and it will take you to it.

If you know of any other Cozy Mystery series that have a Sewing Theme, please post a comment so I can include it/them on the list. Thank you!

Lea Waits writes the Mainely Needlepoint mysteries. I enjoyed her
first book, Twisted Threads, and am looking forward to the next release in this series. She also writes The Antique Print Mystery series. Set on the East coast, both series have a terrific sense of place and are good reads.

The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow isn’t a series, and I don’t know if it was technically intended to be a mystery, but it is basically about unearthing the secrets surrounding an antique quilt which includes fabrics available *only* by the royal family, and an inmate in a mental asylum. I found it to be a fascinating mystery that goes back to a girl who worked as a seamstress to Queen Mary.

This sounds like a pretty good mystery. Wish I had the book. When do you come up with fabrics for royal families n an inmate in a mental asylum!

I just want to add that I went over my entire list of books read in the past year (when I started keeping records 😉 ) & I can’t find any other sewing cozies!!!

Being a sewaholic myself (hence the name Stash Empress, came from my stash of sewing fabrics, books, patterns, notions, etc.) I would love to see more sewing themed books, its a seriously unserviced niche for a cozy author!

We’ve got so MANY pet themed, vintage themed, organic themed, food themed, etc… even quilt & knitting & needlework themed — but why no garment sewing themed???

Ok — here’s a suggestion — anyone want to write a series about a sleuth who sews pet clothing from organic fabrics?????
    😉

I’d be happy with a dressmaker series, actually!!!

Oh….I’d fall in love with a series about a sleuth who sews pet clothing from organic fabrics for dogs and cats!
      *sigh*
I’d be happy with a dressmaker series, too, and I don’t sew, needlepoint, etc. as I love reading cozies with these crafty themes!

Mainely Needlepoint Mysteries by Lea Wait, the first is TWISTED THREADS. I read this just about a month ago and I loved it. The sleuth, Angie Curtis, returns to Maine after her missing mother is found dead. She reunites with her Grandmother and gets involved in her needlepoint business. During this time another murder occurs. So now we have the “cold case” involving her mom and this new murder. There are many twists and turns with both mysteries. Angie is tough, smart and independent; and the other characters are diverse and likeable. Lea Wait is a Mainer, so she gets the location right.
And since this is a very new series, I was thrilled to get in right at the beginning.

Margaret M, thank you. I mistakenly thought I had added Lea Wait’s Mainely Needlepoint Mystery Series to the needlework/needlecraft theme. I was surprised just now to see that I forgot to add her to that page. Thank you for mentioning her series! (I just added her to the needlework/needlecraft theme.)

If you stretched a point you could include Monica Ferris here, too. The series ‘is’ technically called the ‘Needlecraft Mysteries’, and each book does tend to include some sort of sewing / stitching pattern in the back…

Susan*, I have Monica Ferris on the needlework theme. I know they are close, though.

I am not accustomed to writing fan letters, but I must commend you on this wonderfully useful website. Thank you for all your work and time. Although I am 68, as I work 4 days a week at a job I love, I don’t have the time to search for books. I am pleased I can leave the hard part up to you.
