Oh dear. September is going to be expensive! Eleven I want and seven on the must buy list. OUCH. I guess I could give up lunch once or twice a week….
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Susy, that’s quite a lot! A good month, then, if you discount the price involved. Hopefully some can wait.
Pat C. says
I have a question. About publishing cozies.
How can you tell if a book will come in the “usual” 6X4 type of paperback or the “new” type of HUGE book. Some of the books I have ordered recently have come as big as a child’s picture book! Not something I can carry in my purse to read at stop lights.
Is there any way to tell before ordering?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Pat, if you order from Amazon, I’m pretty sure there’s a “dimensions” entry in the product details below the description of the book. I don’t know how accurate those are, as I’ve never gotten out a ruler to check though!
Bek says
Look to see if you see a “mass market” option. That is the typical, regular-sized paperback. Most will be in the $7-$9 range. The over-sized ones are typically $12 or higher.
SusanM says
I just finished John Verdon”s newest, “White River Burning” and recommend it highly. I encourage readers to begin with his first book, “Think of a Number”, which hooked me on the Dave Gurney series.
Bek says
Three for me this month! The Fluke, the Perry AND the Kelly! Been waiting patiently for these!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Bek, that’s a pretty good list! For me, on a good month that would be enough to keep me busy, few enough that I might actually be able to get through all of them.
Bek says
So far this year, I’ve read 148 books. But then, I’m retired, disabled, and live with just my cat, so I read a LOT! That’s why this site is such a Godsend to me!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Bek, I’m glad to be able to help you find book to read! And wow, that’s quite a total!
SUsy S says
Boy am I jealous! I am still working, and we are getting our house ready to put on the market, so I have managed to read less than 100 so far.
By this time next year I should be retired, though I have been thinking of looking for a part-time position in a book store (used or new), to help offset my spending on books. I would probably never see a whole check, but that would NOT be the point of having the job.
Bek says
Now, that would be my ideal job! I could really do some damage to a paycheck in a used book store. Alas, there aren’t any in my tiny town. Or new, for that matter! I have to take a bus 20 miles to shop for new books. AND it only runs 3 days a week…pick up at 7AM, return at 3PM. Longish day, that! I order online, at VERY good prices, though. I’m waiting for an order breathlessly right now, and re-reading a favorite series in the meantime.
Susy S says
Bek, I do buy some on-line, but I HATE paying for shipping. I do buy from a number of different places and one I get e-mail from Abebooks, who regularly has free shipping on some books. I don’t know if you are familiar with them, but here is a link to the latest.

Susy S says
Bek, you are the lucky one this month! I am trying to prioritize my buying. Seven new books is hard on the book budget and I am sticking to it this year because I want to retire next year.
I HAVE to get the McKinlay, the Coco, and the Kelly (hopefully I will get at least 3 B & N 20% off coupons this month). I will TRY to wait on the Archer, the Bridge, the Flower and the Fluke. The other four I should be able to wait until I can find them used or on sale.
I will be making a trip to my favorite used book stores the first week of next month, so maybe I can convince myself to wait….
Unfortunately, my local library does not get many copies of any cozy mysteries, so you usually have to wait a month or more to get a copy, even with interlibrary loan.
Bek says
I manage to order most of my books used online. That helps considerably with my budget! Thriftbooks has been very, very good to me. I don’t drive, so going to the library means cab fare both ways! Heck, I can order 3 books for that amount of money, almost as many as I can borrow for two weeks!
Susy S says
I posted a comment earlier about AbeBooks. Another one that we like is half-price books (HPB.com). They have physical stores, which is how we found them. We are crazy enough that we have gone on road trips with the express purpose of shooing as a number of their stores.
Lucky me, when we retire, there will be three within a fairly short drive. It sounds odd to many people, but one of our criteria in determining where we will retire, is how many used book stores are in the area. The area we currently live in is a fairly large metropolitan area that claims to be a ‘City that Reads’, but there are very few used book stores, and most of the ones that are around, don’t carry things like cozy mysteries (they tend to think of themselves as too high brow for ‘that kind of thing’).
Bek says
I’ve made a note of ALL of these. After Florence, and with no news from home, I may be replacing about 550 books.
Pat D says
Can’t wait for the new Hannah Swenson and the Magical Cats! I love them both!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Pat, I’m certainly glad to see new entries in both series!
Susy S says
I tried to post a comment earlier, but it has disappeared. Since I see no other comments, I wonder if there is a problem. I did not get the usual ‘subscribe’ email after posting.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Susy, I’m not sure why you hadn’t seen a subscribe email, but I haven’t been around as much today to post comments so yours hadn’t gone up yet, not a problem with the comment system itself. (I manually approve comments to cut down on spam, trolls, and other nuisances.)
Noilin says
Oh my thank you so much for the new release posts: a Charles Parish mystery, Whiskey Mystery and a Shetland Mystery. September is going to be a great month.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Noilin, I’m glad to be able to pass along good news on favorite releases!
Pam says
J.A. Jance, Sofie Kelly, and Jenn McKinnlay….I guess 3 is not too bad. 🙂
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Pam, yes, that’s definitely still a good month!
