Here’s a quick question from Sandy:
“I am currently reading Sarah Graves’ Crawlspace and I have a question that maybe you or one of your readers can answer: why did Jacobias’ long lost father and (dead) ex-husband have the same last name? I know it’s silly to wonder and possibly it was explained in an earlier book and I just forgot (I’ve read them all over the years) but it just bugs me…”
If you have the answer, would you please post a comment for Sandy. Thank you!

Hmm. I didn’t get that far with the books, so I don’t know the answer. Is it a typo?
Danna,
I know you’re following the birds and their migration with your feeders and water in the back yard–we have had baltimore orioles through here the last two days. They are eating out of the hummingbird feeder! (Those little yellow do-dads that make the holes really small came out long ago so the Orioles’ beaks fit in there to get treats!) I’ve heard we can put out oranges or grape jelly for them too, but they are just going at that feeder like nobody’s business. There are at least 5–3 males and two females. Gorgeous!!

Maria, my daughter thought we had an Oriole at our bird feeders last week, but they didn’t stay long.
I need to find out when to take our Hummingbird feeders down. I know we are supposed to “force” those sweet little guys to fly south for the winter…
Maria (BearMountainBooks) says
The hummers seem to go on their own. We leave the feeders up pretty long, especially when it is this warm. My mom is north (NM) and she tells me when the hummers leave there. It is another couple of weeks here (usually) before they are gone.
The moral of the story: If you’re still seeing lots of them or different colors, leave it up. We get some really different ones through during migration, but see them perhaps once (Anna’s and the blue throated one have been through before.). We haven’t seen a rufus, but mom gets tons of those. They must take a different route.
At this point we’re still seeing lots of them. I do think they’ve started going south because we are actually seeing higher numbers right now.
It’s so blooming hot. 100 to 104 again today. We keep water out there too and we keep doing a rain dance. I’ve lost my rain-fu or rain mojo…gotta find it.

So sorry I don’t have an answer to you question… but I do feel better knowing I’m not the only person who notices stuff like that (and forgets)!

I don’t have an answer either, Sandy. But, I remember reading one Cozy a few years ago where – for a few chapters – they called the main sleuth by a different name! I sometimes think I should try starting a new career as a Cozy Mystery book editor… When I am reading a book and find bad grammar or typos, I wonder who in the world edited that book! OK, I admit that I don’t grammar-check my comments or entries, but I also don’t draw a paycheck for being an editor!

Ha! I never noticed that before. Must be a continuity mistake that she has never addressed. It happens more than once across several books.

Could it be because he was underground for so long after the explosion he caused that he now uses her last name as a cover? I’ve read all her books but I can’t remember.

I am reading Unhinged now and Mrs. Graves makes a quick comment about the weird coincidence that Jacobia’s ex-husband had the same last name as her maiden name.
She does, unfortunately, have some continuity issues (Sam’s best friend in the early books is Tommy Daigle, then becomes Tommy Pockets in later books, for example) but I love her stories, so it’s easy to ignore it.

Marjie, thanks for clearing this up. Too bad her editor wasn’t able to spot these nagging little details.

Danna:
I agree. There are a couple of other story lines and names that have cropped up that contradict earlier stories. To be honest, I’m surprised the author herself didn’t catch the errors. However, as she has become an author and I’m too scared to try- more power to her!
