Historical Theme Mysteries : R – W Authors

This is the fifth and final installment of the “PERIOD MYSTERIES” or MYSTERY SERIES THAT TAKE PLACE IN DIFFERENT PERIODS OF TIME or “HISTORICAL MYSTERIES” theme. This list is comprised of the Cozy Mystery Site’s authors whose last names begin with R-W:

Deanna Raybourn: Raybourn writes the Lady Julia Grey Mystery Series which is set in Victorian England.

Fay Risner: Risner’s Amazing Gracie Mystery Series is set in early 1900s Iowa…

Candace Robb: Robb has used her graduate work in Medieval Studies to write both the Owen Archer Mystery Series and the Margaret Kerr Mystery Series, both set in the Great Britain of many years ago.

David Roberts: The Lord Edward Corinth Mystery Series takes place in London and teams an aristocrat with a journalist who solve their way through more than one 1930’s mystery.

Caroline Roe (aka Medora Sale): Roe holds her PhD in Medieval Studies and writes the Isaac from Girona Mystery Series which features a blind doctor in mid 1300s Spain.

Elliot Roosevelt: Both of Roosevelt’s series take place in Washington, DC. The Eleanor Roosevelt Mystery Series takes place during the 1940s and the Blackjack Endicott Mystery Series takes place during the 1930s.

Kate Ross: 1820s London is the setting for the Julian Kestrel Mystery Series.

P. B. Ryan: Ryan’s Gilded Age Mystery Series has a governess from Ireland who sleuths in post-Civil War Boston.

C. J. Sansom: 16th century England is the setting for his Matthew Shardlake Mystery Series.

Walter Satterthwait: The Pinkerton Mystery Series takes place during the 1920s. The main sleuth is Detective Phil Beaumont of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency .

Sandra Scoppettone: The Faye Quick Mystery Series takes place in New York during the 1940s. Faye is a tough private investigator in a (1940s) world not quite ready for women in tough roles.

Kate Sedley: Sedley writes the Roger the Chapman Mystery Series which features a Chapman (peddler) who lives in Medieval England.

Maggie Sefton: Sefton writes the Widow and the Rogue Mystery Series. It takes place in 1890s Washington, D.C. and features a young widow who is also a clairvoyant and an English investor.

Sarah R. Shaber: Shaber writes the Louise Pearlie Mystery Series which is set during the 1940s in Washington, DC. The sleuth works for the agency which eventually led to the CIA.

Catherine Shaw: Shaw writes the Vanessa Duncan Cambridge Mystery Series which features a teacher in Cambridge during the late 1800s.

Nicola Slade: Slade writes a British, historical series: the Charlotte Richmond Investigates Mystery Series which is set during Victorian times.

Joanna Campbell Slan: Slan writes the Jane Eyre Chronicles Mystery Series, which features Charlotte Brontë’s Jane in mid 1800s England.

Rosemary Stevens (aka Rosemary Martin): The Beau Brummel Mystery Series takes place during the Regency period (1790-1820) in London, with Beau being a fashion expert, and also a sleuth.

Diane A. S. Stuckart: Leonardo da Vincy Mystery Series takes place during the late 1400s in Italy.

Shirley Tallman (aka Erin Ross): Sarah Woolson Mystery Series – Sarah Woolson is an attorney in 1880s San Francisco.

Robert Tanenbaum: His Butch Karp & Marlene Ciampi Mystery Series takes place in New York during the far-out 1970s…

Sarah Stewart Taylor: Taylor writes the Sweeney St. George Mystery Series which features a professor of history… with a special emphasis on funerary art.

Lou Jane Temple: The Spice Box Historical Mystery Series has its first book set in New York during the Civil and the second book of the series is set France during the Revolution…

Victoria Thompson: The Gaslight Mystery Series is set in the early 1900s in New York and features Sarah Brandt, a midwife.

Charles Todd: A mother & son writing duo (Caroline and Charles Todd) write the Ian Reuledge Mystery Series which features a WW I shell-shocked veteran working at Scotland Yard…

Marilyn Todd: The Roman Murder Mystery Series is set in Ancient Rome and features Claudia Seferius, a vineyard owner who happens to be a very strong woman.

Peter Tremayne: The Sister Fidelma Mystery Series features a 7th century nun in Ireland.

Christine Trent: Florence Nightingale Mystery Series – Florence is a nurse in England during the 1850s.

Nicola Upson: The Josephine Tey Mystery Series is based on the “real life” author Scotland Yard’s Alan Grant Mystery Series, set in the 1930s.

Radha Vatsal: Kitty Weeks Mystery Series – Kitty is a journalist in New York during the 1910s.

S. S. Van Dine: The Philo Vance Mystery Series takes place during the early 1900s…

Robert (Hans) van Gulik: The Judge Dee Mystery Series is a series that features a judge magistrate in China during the 7th century…

Ashley Weaver: The Amory Ames Mystery Series features a wealthy, young woman in 1930s Britain.

Lauren Willig: Pink Carnation Mystery Series – Eloise Kelly is a Cambridge (Massachusetts)  Ph.D. candidate, writing her dissertation on Napoleonic era spies.

Jacqueline Winspear: The Maisie Dobbs Mystery Series features Maisie, an early 20th century psychologist/sleuth in England.

Nancy Means Wright: The Mary Wollstonecraft Mystery Series features Mary, an English governess in 18th Century Ireland. (Mary was a real person.)

Patricia Wynn: The Blue Satan Mystery Series is set in England during the 1700s. The Blue Satan is an aristocratic highwayman, and the series also features a lady-in-waiting.

Historical Theme Mysteries : M – P Authors

The fourth part of the theme: MYSTERY SERIES THAT TAKE PLACE IN DIFFERENT PERIODS OF TIME (PERIOD MYSTERIES or HISTORICAL MYSTERIES) includes mystery authors whose last names begin with M-P:

Anna Maclean (aka Jeanne MacKin): The Louisa May Alcott Mystery Series takes place in Boston, right before the Civil War.

Susan Elia MacNeal writes the Maggie Hope Mystery Series. This series takes place in London, during the 1940s.

Edward Marston (aka Keith Miles & Conrad Allen): Both his Redmayne & Bale Mystery Series and his Robert Colbeck Mystery Series take place in London. Redmayne during the 17th century and Colbeck during the 19th century. Marston’s Domesday Series takes place during the 1000s in England, and his Elizabethan Theater Mystery Series takes place in England during the late 1500s.

Rosemary Martin (aka Rosemary Stevens): The Murder-A-Go-Go Mystery Series takes place during the oh-so-very groovy 1960s and features a very mod New York kind-of-gal. (Is that too ’60s a description!?!)

Amanda Matetsky: The Paige Turner Mystery Series is set in New York during the 1950s and features Paige, a young want-to-be writer for a magazine… who needs to prove to her boss that she can do more than shuffle papers together. Remember… it’s the ’50s!

Alyssa Maxwell: Maxwell writes the Gilded Newport Mystery Series which is set in Newport, Rhode Island. The series takes place during the end of the 19th century.

Edith Maxwell (aka Maddie Day & Tace Baker): The Carriagetown Mystery Series is set in the late 1800s Massachusetts and features a sleuth who is a Quaker midwife.

Ann McMillan: McMillan writes the Civil War Mystery Series set in Virginia, and featuring an herbalist.

Catriona McPherson: The Dandy Gilver Mystery Series has, as its sleuth, Dandy (Dandelion Dahlia Leston), a Scottish aristocrat in the 1920s…

Amy Patricia Meade: Meade writes the Marjorie McClelland Mystery Series which is set during the 1930s in Connecticut and features a mystery author. Meade also writes the Rosie the Riveter Mystery Series, set in New York City during WW II.

Annette Meyers: The Olivia Brown Mystery Series is set in the 1920s and features a women’s activist in Greenwich Village.

Maan Meyers: The writing duo of Annette Meyers and her husband Martin: The Dutchman Historical Mystery Series followsdifferent generations of the same family, with each novel featuring  one of the family’s generations as they move from New Amsterdam to New York.

Keith Miles (aka Edward Marston & Conrad Allen): The Merlin Richards Mystery Series is set in the 1920s in Phoenix…

Margaret Miles: The Bracebridge Mystery Series: This series is set in a little village in Colonial Massachusetts.

Mary Miley writes the Roaring Twenties Mystery Series which features an ex-Vaudeville/silent films actress in Hollywood during the 1920s.

Miriam Grace Monfredo: The Seneca Falls Historical Mystery Series is set in New York during the 19th century and Monfredo’s Cain Trilogy is a continuation of her Seneca Falls series, taking place during the Civil War, and featuring the two nieces of the Seneca Falls sleuth.

Gilbert Morris: The Lady Trent Mystery Series takes place during the 19th Century, and is set in London.

Marcia Muller & Bill Pronzini: The Carpenter & Quincannon,Professional Detective Services Mystery Series features an ex-Pinkerton operative & an ex-Secret Service agent in 1890s San Francisco.

J. J. Murphy: The Algonquin Round Table Mystery Series takes place in New York during the 1920s.

Amy Myers: The Auguste Didier Mystery Series takes place in Victorian England (1830s to the 1900s) and features a master chef in London.

Amy Myers: The Nell Drury Mystery Series is set during the 1920s in England and features a chef at country houses.

Beverle Graves Myers: The Baroque Mystery Series features a “Castrati” sleuth in 18th century Italy.

Beverle Graves Myers & Joanne Dobson: Helluva War Mystery Series is set in New York City, right after the Pearl Harbor Attack.

Sharan Newman: The Catherine LeVendeur Mystery Series features a 12th century novice at a convent in France.

Robin Paige (aka Susan Wittig Albert & husband Bill Albert): The Kate Ardleigh Sheridan & Sir Charles Sheridan Mystery Series takes place in Victorian (1890s) England.

Bernadette Pajer writes the Professor Bradshaw Mystery Series which takes place in the state of Washington during the early 1900s.

Kate Parker: Milliner Mystery Series (early 1900s), Victorian Bookshop Mystery Series, & Deadly Mystery Series (1930s)

Paula Paul (aka Paula Carter): The Alexandra Gladestone Mystery Series is set in Victorian England.

Cynthia Peale: The Beacon Hill Mystery Series: This series features a brother and sister in Victorian Boston.

Sharon Kay Penman: Penman writes several historical series. The Medieval Mystery Series takes place in late twelfth century England.

Andrea Penrose: Lady Arianna Regency Mystery Series is set in London during early 1800s.

Andrea Penrose: Wrexford & Sloan Mystery Series is set in  Regency London.

Anne Perry: Both her Thomas & Charlotte Pitt Mystery Series and her William Monk Mystery Series take place in Victorian England.

Elizabeth Peters (aka Barbara Mertz & Barbara Michaels): The Amelia Peabody Mystery Series features an Egyptologist/feminist in Victorian England. The Vicky Bliss Mystery Series isn’t really a historical mystery, but it does feature a historian.

Ellis Peters: The Brother Cadfael Mystery Series features a monk who happens to know his herbs in England during the 12th century. Peter’s Inspector George Felse Mystery Series takes place in England right after WW II.

Historical Theme Mysteries : G – L Authors

This is the third installment of the Period Mysteries theme, or better said: MYSTERY SERIES THAT TAKE PLACE IN DIFFERENT PERIODS OF TIME. The authors who are included in this particular segment are mystery authors whose last names begin with the letters G-L:

Kaye George (aka Janet Cantrell): People of the Wind Mystery Series – Enga Dancing Flower is a Neanderthal sleuth.

Alan Gordon: The Fools’ Guild Mystery Series is set in the early 1300s and features medieval court jesters who double as secret agents.

Ashley Gardner: The Regency England Mystery Series (1811-1820) features an ex-cavalry captain as the sleuth.

Roberta Gellis: Magdâline la Batarde Mystery Series, 12th century London

Debra H. Goldstein: The Denney Silber Mystery Series (1970s) has, as its sleuth, a student at the University of Michigan.

Ron Goulart: The Groucho Marx Mystery Series takes place in 1930s Hollywood.

Celina Grace: Asharton Manor Mystery Series takes place during different periods of time throughout history.

Celina Grace: Miss Hart and Miss Hunter Investigate Mystery Series takes place in the 1930s.

Pip Granger: Granger’s Rosie Featherby Mystery Series is set in a cafe during post WW II London.

Susanna Gregory (aka 1/2 of Simon Beaufort): The Chronicles of Matthew Bartholomew Mystery Series takes place in the 1300s and the Thomas Chaloner Mystery Series takes place in the 1600s… both are set in Great Britain.

Kerry Greenwood: The Phryne Fisher Mystery Series takes place in the 1920s in Australia. Phryne Fisher is a very “modern woman” who enjoys solving a mystery (or two!)

Carolyn Haines: Pluto’s Snitch Mystery Series stars a young widow just after WWI

Kathryn Miller Haines: The Rosie Winter Mystery Series takes place in New York, during WW II

Victoria Hamilton (aka Amanda Cooper & Donna Lea Simpson): A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder Mystery Series – Emmeline St. Germaine is a spinster in England during the Regency period.

Karen Harper: With titles that contain the words “poyson, poole, and twylight”… how could Harper’s historical mystery series be anything but an Elizabeth I Mystery Series?

C.S. Harris: Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery Series

Tessa Harris: Dr. Thomas Silkstone Mystery Series – 18th century London

Tessa Harris: Constance Piper Mystery Series – late 1880s London

L.B. Hathaway: Posie Parker Mystery Series – 18th century London

Nancy Herriman: Mystery of Old San Francisco Mystery Series – 1860s San Francisco

Teri Holbrook: The Gale Grayson Mystery Series is actually not historical, but the main character happens to be an historian.

Victoria Holt: Here are some historical Stand Alone mysteries with a little romance tossed in.

Anna Lee Huber: The Lady Darby Mystery Series is set in 1830’s Scotland.

Anna Lee Huber: Verity Kent Mystery Series – Verity worked for the Secret Service during WW I, and was widowed during the war.

D.E. Ireland: The Eliza Doolittle & Henry Higgins Mystery Series is based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion characters, set during Edwardian times.

Maureen Jennings: The Murdoch Mystery Series takes place in Canada, during the 1880s. Her Detective Inspector Tom Tyler Mystery Series features one of the only detective inspectors in England during WW II.

Cathie John: This writing duo is comprised of Cathie & John Celestri (a mother/son duo). Their Little Mexico Mystery Series takes place in Kentucky during the 1940s.

Abigail Keam: 1930s Mona Moon Mystery Series – Mona receives a huge inheritance from her uncle during the Depression.

Laurie R. King: The Mary Russel Mystery Series takes place in England in the early 1900s, and features Mary as the sleuth, and she happens to be a protege of Sherlock Holmes.

Peter King: The Jack London Mystery Series takes place in the late 1800s, in California. (Do you remember the classic novel The Call of the Wild… by Jack London?)

Kate Kingsbury: The Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery Series takes place in England during the very early 1900s and features Cecily Sinclair as the owner of the hotel, and the sleuth of the series. Kingsbury’s World War II Manor House Mystery Series is also set in England… during WW II.

Mary Kruger: The Gilded Age Mystery Series takes place in Rhode Island during the 1890s and features an author of mysteries.

Deryn Lake writes the John Rawlings Mystery Series which features Sir John Fielding (the blind British magistrate who started the Bow Street Runners – the first British police force) along with John Rawlings, a young apothecary, set during the 1700s.

Clare Langley-Hawthorne: Ursula Marlowe Mystery Series takes place in early 1900’s London.

Janet Laurence: The Canaletto Mystery Series is set in London and features an Italian painter/sleuth during the 1700s.

Margaret Lawrence: The Hannah Trevor Mystery Series is set during the Revolutionary War in New England and the main character is a midwife.

Gillian Linscott: The Nell Bray Mystery Series features a suffragette in England.

Catherine Lloyd: The Kurland St. Mary Mystery Series stars the daughter of a vicar in a small English town in the 1810s.

Anna Loan-Wilsey: The Hattie Davish “Have Typewriter Will Travel” Mystery Series features a traveling secretary/typist in the late 19th century. Hattie travels to different locales in the USA.

M. Louisa Locke: The Victorian San Francisco Mystery Series has an owner of a boardinghouse as its sleuth. She also works as a clairvoyant.
