The Teaberry Strangler – Laura Childs' New York Times Bestseller…

March 25, 2010

I just got an e-mail from Laura Childs with this very good news for all Cozy Mystery lovers. I sure hope that this is yet another sign that the Cozy Mystery Genre is getting the respect and recognition it deserves!

“PRESS RELEASE:                                        March 22, 2010

Author Laura Childs hits
New York Times Bestseller List with
cozy mystery, The Teaberry Strangler!

With hard-boiled thrillers continually dominating the New York Times Bestseller List, how did Laura Childs manage to squeak on?

“I prayed, I promoted, I burned incense and chanted,” said Childs.  “I gave up chocolate for Lent and did everything but offer up my first born.”

And why exactly is she so ecstatic?

“Because, according to my editor at Berkley Prime Crime, cozies generally do not make it to the New York Times Bestseller List,” says Childs.  “That list tends to be reserved for the ‘big dogs,’ like Dan Brown, Stephen King, James Patterson, and Danielle Steel.”

Actually, all those authors are on the list right now.  Right there along with Laura Childs.  And Childs, a former “ad guy” and CEO of Mission Critical Marketing, must be doing something right, because this is her third cozy mystery in the past year to make it.

“I just try to write ‘em fast and good,” says Childs.  “I try to create believable characters and fun dialogue, keep up a breakneck pace, and give my readers that proverbial dead body in the first chapter.”

How’s she going to celebrate her good fortune?

“Well, I’m way behind on my next book, Scones & Bones, so I have to scribble out at least another 75 pages.  But then I’m going to have my husband take me out to a very elegant dinner.”

The Teaberry Strangler, Berkley Prime Crime, $24.95, March 3, 2010 release,
ISBN 978-0-425-23245-3

Laura Childs is the New York Times Bestselling Author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbooking Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries.”

Now, I ask you, isn’t that great!

Home to Heather Creek Series & Hope Haven Series…

March 23, 2010

I know, I know! I am supposed to post mystery books… BUT, I have had more than several requests for the Home to Heather Creek Series. Here is the new page on my site:

Home to Heather Creek Book Series

And, while I was at it, since I have received a few requests from Cozy Mystery site readers for the list of the Hope Haven Book Series, I decided to give that series a page of its own:

Hope Haven Book Series

The publisher of both series is Guideposts, and their website makes it virtually impossible for non-members (which would include me) to get the chronological list of the books. However, I sent them a letter, and they were great about providing me with a chronological list of the books in both series. I have managed to figure out most of the authors, but would appreciate some help (in way of a comment) if any of you know who authored the last books on either (or both!) of the lists.

Looking for Mystery Book Authors Who Write a la Anne George, Patricia Wentworth, or Very Funny…

March 19, 2010

Here are a few request for help from  Cozy Mystery site readers. If you have any ideas for them, please post a comment.

Kayanna writes (regarding the Texas list of authors):

“I love these books from Texas, and I notice that books from the South (which may not include all of Texas, I’m not entirely clear on the concept!) seem to have a similar flavor and pride of place.
Do you already have a Southern list? I know it’s a state of mind! I’d love to find more books written from that perspective. They often write about small town values; respect, honoring parents, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. I’m thinking of Anne George and Patricia Sprinkle’s Southern series here, and some of the Texan authors exude that same charm. I’m rereading Anne George for the millionth time, but I’m looking for more like her!”

G’ann writes:

“I am reading my last Miss Silver mystery (I’ve collected them from local bookstores and Amazon and a British site). I have loved them! I need another good author. I am really interested in wholesome reading. Does not have to be a mystery, but well written. (I loved Green Dolphin Street.) I will check out your “cozy mystery” authors at the library. Any other suggestions? Thank you.”

Micky writes:

“Could you recommend some cozies that really tickle the funnybone?  I know most cozies have some humor but I really would love to read a series that gives me belly laughs.  Please provide a list for me.”

If you have any ideas for books that you think fall into one of the above categories, please post a comment. And, thank you!

Here are some recommendations by site readers:

I just posted a page for the Miss Read books which Barbara suggests in a comment below… (re: “Miss Silver”)

AND for Micky’s “tickle the funnybone”

Petie recommends Nancy Bell…

Sheila recommends Janet Evanovich

Sue T. recommends the following authors:
Jeffrey Cohen (Double Feature Mystery Series)
David Handler (Stewart Hoag & Lulu Mystery Series)
Elaine Viets (Dead End Job Mystery Series)
