Mr. & Mrs. Murder Television Show

August 20, 2015

Mr. & Mrs. Murder: Series 1 Here is yet another Australian television mystery show that is a gem. My husband and I both enjoy Mr. & Mrs. Murder and only have one problem with it: there are only thirteen episodes!

Mr. & Mrs. Murder is an Australian television show that aired in 2013. It features a married couple with a rather “different” profession. They are a cleaning duo. Actually, rather than being just a cleaning duo, they specialize in cleaning up crime scenes >>> and some of them are pretty messy!

Charlie and Nicola Buchanan arrive to the scenes of crimes right after the police have finished collecting their clues. They not only have odd professions, I have to tell you, they are… a little odd themselves! They are a couple who are madly in love with each other. Nicola’s niece lives with them, and they often corral her into performing crazy tasks while they’re on a case.

Nicola & Charlie often get referrals for crime scene clean-ups by an inspector who values their help in solving the crimes of which he’s in charge. The inspector apparently dated Nicola before she fell madly in love with Charlie, so there are some uncomfortable moments. (If you watch the show, you’ll see what I mean!)

After watching the first episode, my husband and I weren’t quite sure if we wanted to continue watching the show. The mystery was good, but Nicola & Charlie were zany >>> with a capital “Z”! We decided to go ahead and watch the second episode, and then we were hooked!

The four principal characters are Charlie (Shawn Micallef), Nicola (Kat Stewart), Inspector Peter Vinetti (Jonny Pasvolsky), and Nicola’s niece Jess (Lucy Honigman). They are all terrific.

Each episode starts out with Nicola & Charlie going to a crime scene where they start the cleaning process. While cleaning the crime scene they invariably make friends with some of the suspects. I should mention that they make friends quickly. They are both affable, friendly, fun-loving people. The couple manages to get invited to many functions you wouldn’t typically envision a crime scene cleaning duo being invited to.

Oh, and did I mention this is a funny mystery show? My husband and I find ourselves chuckling quite often. Every once in a while I think about the old adage: There’s someone out there for everyone. Well, this quirky couple was simply meant to be together! They are the… oddest pair of sleuths you have probably ever encountered!

Charlie (Shaun Micallef) is also the creator and one of the writers of the show. As Charlie, he is one quirky guy! As for Kat Stewart (Nicola) she is absolutely model-beautiful, yet she is totally believable in the less-than-flattering hazmat outfit. Also, they are both terrific in the crazy situations in which they invariably find themselves.

Nicola’s niece, Jess, is a delight as an unwilling participant in the crazy situations Nicola and Charlie put her in. The couple’s idea of the importance of Jess’s studies (she’s working on her MBA) versus her helping solve a crime usually has my husband and me laughing. Let’s see >>> miss an exam vs.. help with the crime >>> you can always make up an exam. (I told you, Charlie & Nicola are a zany couple!)

Mr. & Mrs. Murder‘s Charlie & Nicola have the same playfulness going as the Thin Man‘s Nick & Nora Charles >>> without the martinis or Asta! I definitely recommend Mr. & Mrs. Murder. It is available on Netflix, in disc format only. Also, on Acorn.

Cozy Mysteries in San Diego

August 19, 2015

A couple of years ago, my husband and I vacationed in California. We had a great time seeing a lot of beautiful sights. If you’re lucky enough to be out in the San Diego area >>> there are so many wonderful places to visit: San Diego Zoo, Point Loma Lighthouse, and the missions, just to mention a few.

If you’re a Cozy Mystery reader in the San Diego area on Saturday – August 22 at 2:00 PM this year, you have one more terrific activity in store for you: several Cozy Mystery authors are getting together at the Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore for a book signing!

Ellen Byron, author of the new Plantation Shudders Mystery Series, kindly let me know about this terrific book signing. Her first novel, Plantation Shudders, will introduce her sleuth, Maggie (short for Magnolia) Crozat, as she returns back to her family plantation which is now a family-run bed and breakfast.

Daryl Wood Gerber (aka Avery Aames) will also be attending this joint signing. Most of you already recognize both of her Cozy Mystery author names. As Daryl Wood Gerber she writes the very popular Cookbook Nook Mystery Series. Jenna Hart is at it again, solving whodunnits in Fudging the Books. As Avery Aames, she writes the equally popular Cozy Mystery Series: the Cheese Shop Mystery Series.

As if this San Diego book signing couldn’t get any better, enter Diane Vallere! Vallere writes the ultra popular Material Girl Mystery Series. Poly (as in Polyester!) Monroe will need to find out who killed her good friend’s husband in Crushed Velvet. Diane Vallere also writes the following Cozy series: the Costume Shop Mystery Series, the Mad for Mod Mystery Series, and the Style & Error Mystery Series.

Can this book signing get any better (you may ask)? Yes! Nancy Cole Silverman will be joining the other three authors at this fun event. Silverman just released Beyond a Doubt – which follows reporter Carol Childs as she tries to uncover who is responsible for the murder of several girls in Hollywood. Yow! This mystery has been described as an exciting “nail-biter”.

So – for those of you lucky enough to be in the San Diego area at 2:00 PM on August 22 – head on over to the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore (at 5943 Balboa Ave – Suite 100, San Diego, California) to meet a wonderful line-up of mystery authors!

Four (Five?) New-to-the-Site Cozy Mystery Authors: Ellen Byron: Cajun Country, Susannah Hardy: Greek to Me, Sadie Hartwell: Tangled Web, A.L. Herbert: Mahalia Watkins Soul Food, & Carlene O’Neil: Cypress Cove

August 17, 2015

I just added four new Cozy Mystery authors, or should I say five? As you will see when you read this entry, one of the Cozy Mystery authors writes under two names. (Would that be four people, five authors?!?) These are all authors who Cozy Mystery readers have recommended as belonging on the Cozy Mystery site. Thank you!

Ellen Byron   Though a relative newcomer to writing Cozy Mysteries, Ellen Byron is a long-time television writer finally trying her hand at longer fiction. With writing credits on shows like Wings, Just Shoot Me!, and Still Standing, she brings veteran talent to her Cozy Mystery series, the Cajun Country Mystery Series.

Susannah Hardy (aka Sadie Hartwell)   A graduate of St. Lawrence University in New York, Susannah Hardy has spent significant time in the New York/New England area, including growing up in upstate New York and currently living in Connecticut. She writes the Greek to Me Mystery Series, starring restaurant manager Georgie Nikolopatos, and (under the pseudonym Sadie Hartwell) the Tangled Web Mystery Series, starring yarn store manager Josie Blair.

A.L. Herbert   Growing up in scenic Maryland, it’s no surprise that A.L. Herbert chose to set a mystery series in beautiful Prince George’s County, Maryland – the Mahalia Watkins Soul Food Mystery Series. Halia owns the Mahalia Sweet Tea Restaurant, which keeps her busy >>> especially since she has a taste for sleuthing!

Carlene O’Neil   A native of the Northern California Wine Country, Carlene O’Neil writes about the land she loves and knows best >>> so it’s natural that her series, the Cypress Cove Mystery Series, is set in Cypress Cove in the heart of California wine country. The series stars Penny Lively, former photojournalist now running her family winery after inheriting it from her aunt. Before becoming a Cozy Mystery author, O’Neil was a television writer.

Three New Mystery Series Coming September 2015 – K. K. Beck: Workplace, Deanna Raybourn: Veronica Speedwell, Wendy Corsi Staub: Mundy’s Landing

August 14, 2015

Last month I told you about the new Cozy Mystery Series that would be coming out this month, August (Three New Cozy Series Starting in August 2015), so this month I’ll be discussing some of the new series getting started by established site authors coming out next month, September.

First up is K.K. Beck‘s new series, the Workplace Mystery Series, starting with her the first novel in the series, Tipping the Valet. This new series will star unlucky young Tyler Benson, currently a valet, who becomes involved in a series of auto thefts and a murder at his workplace restaurant. When a body turns up in a parked car and someone takes shots at a famous local tech magnate, Tyler will start to seem more and more like the logical suspect >>> which will force him to take up a second job as an amateur detective to avoid landing in jail! Beck writes several other series on the site, including the Iris Cooper & Jack Clancy Mystery Series, set in the 1920’s, and the Jane Da Silva Mysteries, starring a lounge singer and detective in Seattle, as well as a number of stand alone mysteries.

Next will be Deanna Raybourn‘s A Curious Beginning, which will be the first in the Veronica Speedwell Mystery Series. An orphan in Victorian England, Veronica intends to travel abroad and pursue her scientific studies after the death of her spinster aunt, but will instead be plunged into intrigue and a bit of romance when a mysterious German baron helps her thwart her own kidnapping. Unfortunately the baron soon turns up murdered – forcing Veronica and the baron’s friend, a foul-tempered librarian named Stoker, to both discover the killer and help piece together the mystery of what the baron knew about why Veronica was targeted for kidnapping. Raybourn also writes another Victorian-themed mystery series listed on the site, the Lady Julia Grey Mystery Series, starring a young widow living in Victorian London.

Finally will be Wendy Corsi Staub‘s Blood Red, the 1st in her Mundy’s Landing Mystery Series. (Staub’s books are more thriller than Cozy, but she is on the site and I know many of the site viewers are fans, so I thought it should be mentioned…) Mundy’s Landing is a scenic town in New York’s Hudson Valley, known for its beautiful vistas… and a past including a hundred-year-old serial killer case. Elements of this dangerous past appear to be repeating around Rowan Mundy, a grade school teacher and mother of three. Staub also writes the Lily Dale Mystery Series, the Nightwatch Trilogy, and the Thriller Trilogy – none really are Cozy, but thrillers that have been recommended by friends of the site.

Good Grief! I should have written this entry about the four new mystery series that will start in September! (Where is my head?)

Joyce and Jim Lavene (aka J.J. Cook & Ellie Grant) will be starting their Purple Door Detective Agency Mystery Series. Sunshine Merryweather is the sleuth in this series, and she happens to be a witch! She is also the owner of the Purple Door Detective Agency in Norfolk, Virginia. Sunshine will be spending a lot of time with Aine, a spirit, while she does her sleuthing. The first book in this series is Be My Banshee.
