I’m Back in San Antonio, but a Little Under the Weather…

December 7, 2015

ParkWe’re back in San Antonio. As I wrote about previously, my husband and I drove our daughter’s car out to Washington, D.C. over the Thanksgiving holiday. She’s happy to have her car, and we’re happy that we were able to see her >>> although too briefly!

We took our time driving out, which we find is a lot of fun now that we don’t have two young children in the back seat asking about the estimated time of arrival, or the estimated time of our next food break, or worse yet, the estimated time of our next restroom break.

Since we took our time driving out, we visited places along the way that look interesting to us. I’ll mention one of these places, for those of you who may have a chance to visit Durham, North Carolina. If you live in Durham, no doubt you already not only know of, but have visited the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The gardens are 55 acres of natural beauty. This is a place that should not be missed!

Since our daughter only got Thanksgiving day off, my husband and I were able to take it easy (which we like).

The only downside to the trip was that just after I got back I caught a pretty bad cold (probably from all the people who were coughing on the plane). Sure does make flying seem not so attractive.

Even though we just got home, I’m planning on going back out in late March for the Cherry Blossoms and am already looking forward to that trip!

Agatha Christie’s (Original) Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries – TV Shows

December 5, 2015

Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries Let me start this entry by telling you that I thought for sure I had already written about this terrific television series. This entry is about the original Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries which was made in the 1980s. It is a totally delightful series full of witty dialog, absolutely gorgeous and sumptuous wardrobe, and very good mysteries.

There are eleven episodes that follow the private detective duo comprised of Tommy and Tuppence. They are all based on Agatha Christie‘s Tommy & Tuppence mystery novels. I will admit to not being a fan of this series of Christie mystery novels but I love this television series. If I were to pick just two words to describe this mystery series. I would say “fun romp”.

The series starts out with Tommy & Tuppence reuniting after WWI. (No spoilers here->>> so I won’t divulge too much!) The series takes place during the 1920s, which means that Tuppence is able to wear flapper-type attire, including beautiful hats and dresses. Francesca Annis portrays Tuppence, and she’s terrific! Her portrayal brings a young exuberance to Tuppence. She makes us believe she is Tuppence, and we can see how Tuppence is a force to be reckoned with.

James Warwick portrays Tommy. At first I wasn’t quite sure if he would be convincing as someone Tuppence would enjoy being with, but by the end of the first episode, I knew he was perfect as Tommy.

Tommy and Tuppence take over the Blunt’s International Detective Agency after both Tommy & Tuppence were left unemployed after the Great War. The series was made during the 1980s – so don’t expect today’s production values. Although it lacks the bells and whistles of today’s television shows, it is a very superior television series.

My husband and I both enjoy the (original) Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries. I strongly recommend this Cozy Mystery television series. I especially recommend it to fans of the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. These mystery shows have the same delightful, whimsical, fun, joie de vivre as Phryne Fisher’s shows. I should mention there is a more recent series (which will be available on Netflix and is currently available on Acorn). We enjoyed the original series so much that when it’s time to revisit Tommy and Tuppence, we plan on staying with this version.

This series is available on Netflix in disc format. It is also available on Acorn.

Three New Cozy Mystery Series Coming January 2016

December 3, 2015

Can you believe it’s almost 2016! It seems like only yesterday when we were celebrating the new millennium, and that was 16 years ago!

Back to Cozy Mysteries! Three Cozy Mystery authors will be starting new series this January:

First is Bailey Cattrell‘s Enchanted Garden Mystery Series, which will be beginning with Daisies for Innocence. This novel will introduce Elliana (Ellie) Allbright and her perfume shop in Poppyville, California. When her part-time assistant (Josie) starts dating her ex and turns up mysteriously dead, Ellie will need to find the real culprit before she becomes the prime suspect herself! Bailey Cattrell also writes the Magical Bakery Mystery Series as Bailey Cates and the Home Crafting Mystery Series as Cricket McRae.

Next up will be Dani Pettrey‘s Cold Shot, the 1st in her new Chesapeake Valor Series. In this romantic suspense series, we will be introduced to Griffin McCray, a former SWAT-team sniper and current park ranger at Gettysburg. When a pair of relic hunters uncover a suspiciously fresh corpse near the Little Round Top, Griffin will need to call on current and past skills to help discover the killer. Dani Pettrey also writes the Alaskan Courage Mystery Series, a romantic suspense series starring various members of the McKenna family in Yancey, Alaska.

Finally will be Paige Shelton‘s To Helvetica and Back, the 1st in the new Dangerous Type Mystery Series. This novel will star Clare Henry, assistant typewriter repairer to her grandfather Chester. When a stranger who tried to force Clare to hand over an antique typewriter they are repairing for another customer turns up dead, Clare will need to solve the case for her own peace of mind. Paige Shelton also writes the Farmers’ Market Mystery Series and the Country Cooking School Mystery Series.

As always you can check out these books (and many more!) on the New Cozy Mystery Book Series page.
