Sergeant Cribb (USA) (or Just “Cribb” in Great Britain) Television Mystery Series

October 11, 2017

Let me first state that if you’re looking for high-tech special effects or modern-day filming techniques, this television mystery series is not for you. However, if you’re looking for a British police procedural set in the late 1880s that features good acting, very nice Victorian sets and wardrobe, with interjections of humor, then you’ll probably enjoy Sergeant Cribb as much as my husband and I do.

Peter Lovesey wrote the Sergeant Cribb mysteries, so it is a real treat that Peter Lovesey also had his hand in the writing of the scripts for these 1979-1981 television episodes. It ensures that the shows are as close as possible to the mystery novels. Unfortunately, there are only fourteen episodes.

Sergeant Cribb (I’ll refer to the shows by the USA title rather than the British “Cribb“) was produced in the late 1970s/early 1980s, by Granada Television. The series features Alan Dobie as Cribb, with William Simons (from the Inspector Alleyn television series) as his constable. The relationship between them is phenomenal. Cribb is able to be both a friend of sorts as well as a boss to Detective Constable Thackery. A lot of their interactions are quite humorous (on the dry side).

Don’t be surprised to find some actual events interspersed throughout the shows. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of Victorian England’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. Oh, and the episode featuring Inspector Jowell’s (Cribb’s boss, played by David Waller) boy’s boarding school reunion.

Sergeant Cribb and his constable somehow solve the mysteries that others are unable to solve. Cribb, it seems, has an innate gift for the world of detection.

(PS: For those you you who are Rosemary & Thyme fans, Peter Lovesey was a “story consultant” for many of the episodes.)

Three New Cozy Holiday Releases Coming November 2017

October 6, 2017

Well, November might not be as good as this month for holiday-themed Cozy Mystery releases, (October will have 8 Holiday Cozies!) but it will still be pretty good with three holiday Cozy releases – all of them Christmas themed!

First will be Rhys Bowen‘s The Ghost of Christmas Past, the 17th in her Molly Murphy Mystery Series. Life hasn’t been particularly kind to semi-retired private detective Molly Murphy Sullivan, and she’s hoping that an invitation to a mansion on the Hudson for her holidays will be a healing interlude for both her and her husband, Daniel. But mystery will haunt them even there, as the daughter of the house disappeared ten years ago on another winter night – and a young woman will appear on the doorstep during their visit, claiming to be her! Bowen also writes the Royal Spyness Mystery Series and the Evan Evans Mystery Series.

Next up, Vicki Delany will be releasing Hark the Herald Angels Slay, the third in her Year-Round Christmas Mystery Series. This will be a “Christmas in July” style mystery, as summer is heating up in  Rudolph, New York, where the residents maintain the Christmas spirit all year round.  When Merry Folger’s ex-fiance, Max, arrives unexpectedly, he isn’t exactly welcome – especially since it’s clear that he’s there to win back her heart, and she’s decidedly lukewarm about those intentions. But she never wanted him dead – and that’s just how he turns up. Delany writes several other mystery series, including the Constable Molly Smith Mystery Series and the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery Series.

Finally, Krista Davis will be putting out Not a Creature Was Purring, the 5th in her Claws and Paws Mystery Series. Christmas is always a jolly affair in Wagtail, Virginia, but Holly Miller’s grandmother is determined to make it even more special this year by holding a Christkindl Market. Unfortunately, the holiday will have other, less “paw-sitive” activities as well, as a local pet clothing tycoon turns up dead. Krista Davis also writes the Domestic Diva Mystery Series and the Pen & Ink Mystery Series.
