Here is some very important news for all of you P. D. James fans: She has just finished a sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice! Yes, it’s true! The book, Death Comes to Pemberley, will be available in the USA in December, and a month earlier in Great Britain.
According to James, it took her two years to complete this project, and she does not plan on doing anything like this again. James has long been a fan of Jane Austen, as well as crimes. So, what better way to follow up Pride and Prejudice than with a murder at Pemberley?!?

Danna, Do you have a site for replies other than the current topics? I just read John Grisham’s “The Confession” and I wanted to comment on this book.
When I start to read a John Grisham book I have to start reading it whenever I have nothing else to do. This is because I will do nothing else until I have that book read! John Grisham is such a good storyteller! Ilove his books.
I love to read books like this. Whenever I get into a book like this i can’t even hardly sleep until I have finished the book. This ” The Confession” was such a good book! Such a good story!

The only thing I wish the two aides to the governor would have been caught with holding the confession from the true killer. They should have been exposed somehow! reminds somewhat of “Watergate.”
Do you suppose some of these things have some true basis?
Do any of you ever have a hard time getting interested in a new book after reading such a good book as this?

Perfect! Two of my favorite authors combined. I’ll definitely be buying this book.
I normally don’t like authors writing another author’s books, it is usually a huge disappointment. However, I’m hoping this is an exception.
To be fair, it does sometime work. Jill Paton Walsh has written three Lord Peter Wimsey books after the death of Dorothy L Sayers and they are excellent. Jill Paton Walsh has managed to capture the essence, the style and humor of Dorothy L Sayers books so well you could be forgiven for thinking they had been written by DLS. (In fact the first one was partially written by DLS as Jill completed her unfinished manuscript.)

Carrie, I’m afraid I share your sentiments about a second author trying to write with a previous author’s characters. Characters like Sherlock Holmes… There’s a reason Holmes is so universally known and loved… and (in my opinion!!!) Conan Doyle is that reason…

I really love what Carole Nelson Douglas did, though, in the “Holmes Universe” as we call things in fandom.
She started a series with Irene Adler [“The Woman” to Sherlock Holmes], had her married to Godfrey Norton, solving mysteries with her stalwart and very innocent companion, who was a governess before she met Irene, and they have many adventures.
Irene is the glittering, glamorous woman, smoking cigarettes non-stop, rationcinating with the best of them solving crimes in a Holmesian manner. Her companion chronicles her doings, and assists in resolving the mysteries.
Occasionally Sherlock Holmes makes an appearance, sort of a “cameo” here and there, and I find that CN Douglas does a superior job of writing him in character.

Marja, thanks for filling us in on Carole Nelson Douglas and her Irene Adler series. I think most of us are more familiar with her Midnight Louie series.

CN Douglas has another delightful series, the “Midnight Louie” mysteries, which I absolutely adore.
Midnight Louie, a 20-pound feline, “writes his entries” in a Chandleresque style, but most of the story is told from an omniscient POV with Temple Barr, publicist and crime-solver, as the main character. A regular cast of characters surrounds her.
There are through-lines from the beginning of the series concerning the whole cast of characters, so it’s best to read the books in order!

I typically avoid these types of books, prefering to read the original author’s stories. It just doesn’t seem right to use another writer’s characters, themes, etc. If you’ve got a good idea for a story, then write your own story, don’t usurp someone else’s ideas!
