Here’s hoping!!! And, I really am hoping!!!
I have already added Harry’s Law to my television queue… This is a case of sight unseen, but, being a huge Kathy Bates fan, I doubt I am going wrong on this one! From Misery, to Fried Green Tomatoes, Dolores Claiborne, Primary Colors, to… well, the list of Kathy Bates movies goes on and on, and on some more!
This coming Monday, Kathy Bates will be adding being the star of a television show to her repertoire, and I am so anxiously waiting to see what she does with her prime time show on NBC, that I have (quite literally) already programmed our two modes of taping off of the television.
This Monday night, Kathy Bates (along with Brittany Snow, Nate Corddry, and Aml Ameen) will be starring in Harry’s Law, the newest “lawyer” show that I know about. But, there is a twist on this one: Harry isn’t a brilliant lawyer working in a gorgeous-looking building with even more gorgeous-looking attorneys. Harry (Harriet Korn) is a patent lawyer who, upon being fired from her job, sets up her own law practice on a shoestring… actually, in an old shoe store.
Harry’s Law has David E. Kelly at the helm (behind the scenes), which is quite promising. HOWEVER>>> There is one very UNpromising thing!!! NBC has deemed it their responsibility to put Harry’s Law up against an already-established, and very popular “cop show”>>> That’s right! Think about your already established Monday night television viewing… and, if you’re anything like me, there is only one show on Monday nights (now that The Closer is on hiatus!) Harry’s Law will be taking on Castle… (As if there aren’t other hour slots on Monday night NBC could have programmed this new show into!)
PS>>> Having watched the first two episodes of Harry’s Law, I have taken it off of our SageTV taping queue. I simply couldn’t not get over all of the “sermonizing” NOR the totally absurd lawyers’ arguments in front of both the judges and the juries. I realize that this is only a television show, but come on! As for a lawyer telling a jury that she only wants/needs one person to vote not guilty, so that her cocaine addict gets a chance to go to college… Is that even legal?!? And, if it isn’t, why don’t they have a consulting lawyer on the production set?!?
At least I won’t have a problem picking between Castle and Harry’s Law. As much as I enjoy Kathy Bates, this is a no-brainer!
Sunny says
Thankfully, my Tivo can record two shows at once!
karen says
I’ll definitely be watching Castle!!
Ann says
I have this noted for Monday too. I think Kathy Bates is amazing. I so hope this takes off. Castle can be watched on a variety of other places, including the internet so you don’t have to miss it.

Not ANOTHER show at that time on Monday?! My DVR is full already. Hawaii-Five-0 (book me Danno), Castle, Men of a Certain Age, … The Closer and now this show. Seriously people. Thank you for moving Chase to Wednesday, but I can only do so much on Mondays. Give this show a chance!
Laura says
Danna: DVR is the best thing ever! We can record two shows at the same time. It was a no-brainer to dump the new “Hawaii Five O”. We gave it a good chance, but grew tired of the violence and absurd plots. Love “Castle” and I’m really hoping “Harry’s Law” is a winner. Does anyone know how networks figure out ratings for shows these days?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I hear you! I remember when shows were given more that two weeks to “prove themselves” and also, when certain nights of the week “belonged” to one of the channels. Now it seems like networks actually program things up against other shows thinking that people will leave the strong-holds of certain nights.
Wednesday night was difficult for me to keep track of at the beginning of this fall’s season. Law & Order L.A., The Defenders, and The Whole Truth were all up against each other. Of course, The Whole Truth (which was my favorite of the three) was cancelled very early in the game. I wish the Nielsen raters would hook up my television set! I can tell you that “The Housewives of Anytown” wouldn’t have aired as long as The Whole Truth did!
Angela says
I loved “The Whole Truth” too! I was really sad to see it cancelled. 🙁
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Angela, I simply don’t know how a show like this can be cancelled, at the same time that more “Real Wives” of different locations are being aired!
Stephanie says
I’m really looking forward to this, too – love Kathy Bates. Although it sounds like maybe she isn’t the star…? Given that she isn’t Harry. I was hoping she was (as in Harriet – although I guess even a tom-boy-ey Harriet would still probably spell it Harri…).
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I’m sorry… I must not have made it clear… “Harry” stands for Harriet Korn>>> who is Kathy Bates.
Annette says
Well did anyone watch it, I DVR’d it and will watch tonight. Since Castle was a repeat. I am almost hoping it is not good, so I do not have to choose between 3, cause I cannot stay up till 11 to watch!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I watched Harry’s Law this morning, Annette. I wanted to ask others what they thought of the show, also.
While I truly enjoyed seeing Kathy Bates, I am hoping the “sermonizing” will be ommited from future shows. Enough already with writers/producers feeling they have to soap-box their opinions on legalizing drugs and/or politics! If I want that, I know exactly which shows to watch…
Janis says
Amen to that!
Janice says
Yes, I liked Kathy Bates’s new show, but why did she have to add the degrading comments about Republicans? She just alienated half of the U.S. She will lose a lot of viewers.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
The legalization of drugs, and how it would help us solve the war on drugs>>> a little too “typical Hollywood” for me! (I did notice that they tried to “make nice” by having the character quickly say that she wasn’t sure about legalizing drugs… after the rather long sermon about why they should be legal…)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
As much as I like Kathy Bates, watching Harry’s Law brought back memories of another David E. Kelley show: Picket Fences. As much as I absolutely loved seeing the judge (Ray Walston) and the defense lawyer (Fyvush Finkel) matching wits, the constant preaching/sermonizing that Kelley ran through each of the shows was simply too much for me. I can form my own opinions about issues… without Kelley lacing his views into every one of his shows… And, when I want to watch his political views, I’ll seek them out! (They are easy enough to find… just watch any one of his shows! I had hoped that he had “tempered” with age…)
PAT says
WHAT A GREAT SHOW, WONDERFUL ACTING.
CAN’T WAIT TILL NEXT WEEK.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Just three more days, Pat!
Frieda says
I loved it. Like two of the other characters in the show – I believe things happen for a reason. Just that fact that she ended up in the emergency room twice in one day cracked me up.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Frieda, I also enjoyed it… even with all of the “teaching moments” for all of us in the audience who need to be enlightened. Kathy Bates is absolutely wonderful in everything she is in. Yes, that was truly serendipitous!
Anne says
I liked Harry’s Law, too. I’m not so sure about the shoe store part, though. Needed a bit of tweeking and hopefully the next shows will be even better.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Anne, I agree about the tweeking…
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Wow! I’ve just received my “David E. Kelley wake up call.”!!!
(Second verse, same as the first!)

So I had heard the buzz about Harry’s Law and decided to give it a try. After all there is some silly good talent there. Overall, the acting was top notch – I think a credit to the actors, but there was a lot that just didn’t do it for me. I know it is only a form of entertainment and that in the world of television there are more than a few liberties taken, but my goodness at the legal fantasy that was dished out. I won’t go into all of it, but I’m not sure there was anything in the episode that I found the least bit plausible. I will say that I am not a resident of the state of Ohio – though I did live there a while – nor am I licensed to practice law there, but my goodness – the liberties ruined it for me. That and there was a lot of preaching.
I’ve just had a novel published, nice little mystery, with a legal component. I took some liberties, but liberties that were plausible. In my humble opinion, that is ok. Not because I did or do it, but because it could happen.

I actually turned on Harry’s Law………….it was different and for a change…………different……….and the idea starting in a SHOE STORE….I thought that interesting….and grabbed me to the point I didn’t move to another station. I do love Kathy Bates……..we all know you can’t talk to the judge like she did, but goodness sakes it is a television show and to me a delight……………………hope Kathy Bates stays around for a while. I like it……….grin.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Then, Shirley, I hope Harry’s Law stays on “for a while”>>> As much as I enjoy Kathy Bates, I won’t be amongst the show’s fans.
