Historical Theme Mysteries : A & B Authors

April 5, 2008

This Cozy Mystery Theme will be presented in five separate entries, since there are so many authors on the site who write (in some cases I should say “wrote”…. but I will do the entries in the present tense) MYSTERY SERIES THAT TAKE PLACE IN DIFFERENT PERIODS OF TIME… The mystery authors whose last names begin with A and B, and who write “PERIOD MYSTERIES” are:

Suzanne Adair: Adair is a new author and she is writing the American Revolution Mystery Series.

Susan Wittig Albert: The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter take place in England during the early 1900s, with Beatrix Potter and her menagerie of animals. The Darling Dahlias Mystery Series takes place in Depression era Alabama.

Bruce Alexander (aka Bruce Cook): The Sir John Fielding Mystery Series takes place in England during the 18th century and revolves around a blind judge.

Tasha Alexander: Writes the Lady Emily Mystery Series which is set in Victorian England.

Conrad Allen (aka Edward Marston & Keith Miles): The Dillman Mystery Series takes place on the high seas during the early 1900s and has, as its sleuths, a husband and wife team who keep their marriage a secret to better enable them to blend in with the other passengers of the ship.

Tess Arlen: The Lady Montfort Mystery Series takes place in Edwardian England.

Maureen Ash: The Templar Knight Mystery Series with Bascot de Marin returning to England after being wounded and enslaved in the Crusades.

S. H. Baker: the Dassas Cormier Mystery Series takes place in Louisiana during the 1920s…

Mignon F. Ballard: Miss Dimple Mystery Series features an elementary grade school teacher in Georgia, during WW II.

Aileen G. Baron: The Lily Sampson Mystery Series features an archaeology graduate student in the early to mid 1900s.

Stephanie Barron (aka Francine Mathews): The Jane Austen Mystery Series is set in England during the early 1800s, and of course, it features Jane Austen as the sleuth.

Bernard Bastable (aka Robert Barnard): The Amadeus Mozart Mystery Series is set in England during the 1820s, and not in the second part of the 1700s as one might expect!

George Baxt: The Celebrity Murder Series: With such celebrities as Alfred Hitchcock, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Bette Davis… when else could this series take place but during Hollywood’s heyday… 1920s until the mid 20th century.

Simon Beaufort: This is the husband and wife writing duo comprised of Beau Riffengburgh and Susanna Gregory. They write the Geoffrey Mappestone Mystery Series which is set during the 1100s in Great Britain.

Carrie Bebris: The Mr. & Mrs. Darcy Mystery Series, which features Elizabeth Bennet and her husband Mr. Darcy, is set in England during the early 1800s. The series starts right where Pride and Prejudice finishes… as Elizabeth marries the dashing Mr. Darcy.

K. K. Beck: The Iris Cooper & Jack Clancy Mystery Series is set during the late 1920s, so of course, it features a flapper.

Rhys Bowen: The Molly Murphy Mystery Series features an Irish immigrant in America during the very early 1900s. Bowen just began the Lady Georgiana Mystery Series which is set during the early 1930s in England, and features Lady Georgiana, the 34th in line for the throne.

Emily Brightwell: The Mrs. Jeffries Mystery Series is set in London during the mid to late 1800s and features a housekeeper (Mrs. Jeffries) who helps Inspector Witherspoon solve mysteries.

Frances Brody: Kate Shackleton Mystery Series – Kate is a WWI widow in a British small milling village in the 1920s.

Kate Bryan: The Maggie Maguire Mystery Series takes place during the 1870s and features both Maggie and her pick-pocket cousin Grady as the sleuths.

Fiona Buckley: The Ursula Blanchard Mystery Series features a Lady-in-Waiting in Queen Elizabeth I’s court.

I’m looking for the author and name of a book about a dancer who accidentally causes the death of her fiance in a car accident. Before he dies he says a women’s name. She accompanies his body to Europe and learns more about his life and the woman whose name he muttered. She bears a striking resemblance to the woman whose picture she sees in a painting on his family’s property. She meets his American cousin Paul and his brother William. Does this book sound familiar to anyone? I’m trying not to give away all the details of the book, it was a wonderful read, but I have forgotten the title of the book and the author.

Great site! Thanks so much! I love this genre and this information is wonderful. I will ask my husband to link you to his Real Estate site. He has a PR3+ website. Would you link his website to yours in return? This should be helpful to both of you. Thanks again, Christen

Danna, I was just reading this older posting and I remember saying in another posting that while I am reading some of the series books by authors such as Victoria Thompson, Rhys Bowen and Carola Dunn I can get so caught up with the stories that I wish I could somehow let those characters in those stories know what is going to happen to their countries in just a few more years. I feel this way especially with the stories that are set in England in between the Great Depression and WW2. How I wish I could warn them some how of what is to come.
I feel the same way with some of the historical based, or themed books from here in the USA. Some history is so sad and we can’t change any of it.

Linda C, wouldn’t that be wonderful if we could go back in time and warn generations before us?

This is an amazing site – all these years I have been devouring cosy-mysteries and didn’t even know there was a name for them. Already picked up some (what look like) good reads. I have a kindle, a Sony, a kobo – any plans for including information of available sources for the latter.
Once again – an amazing site, you must be an amazing person 🙂 thanks so much.

(I tried finding the Nook links, but I have to admit that it takes a whole lot of time to find them.)

There is a fairly new mystery series that is set in depression era by Susan Wittig Albert. The Darling Dahlias…I Highly recommend it, wish she decided to write more of them, so far there are only 7 I believe.
