Mystery Identity of Mystery Authors, Books &/or Series

July 23, 2016

I have accumulated a few more questions about the following mysterious authors/books/series. If you think you know who the Cozy Mystery reader is looking for, please post a comment below. Thank you!

Robin:

knitQuestion I am looking for the author and series of a yarn shop set in the French quarter in New Orleans that she does mysteries and owns the shop also. She does a knitting circle also once a week with a class and there is talk of different types of yarn, one being Alpaca yarn a lot in it. There is always talk about the walks during Halloween and such of the houses and historical things on the streets just like the books with Laura Childs ones with her Tea mysteries in Charleston.

Lyn:

recorder`1I’m looking for a mystery series, probably written in the 80’s- ’90’s, about a musician in an early music group who keeps solving crimes. There’s wonderful writing about the performances of this group as well as well constructed plots. Maybe about 5 books in the series. The protagonist is, I think, a recorder player. There are also a viol de gamda player, a harpsichordist, and a violinist in this New York City group. Help

Chai:

petuniaI’m looking for a mystery novel I read in high school years ago, and all I can remember is that the protagonist was a fuller figured lady who called her growling tummy Petunia! It was probably published some time between the 60s and 80s, and in one book I read, her main love interest was, if I recall correctly, a Japanese-American. Does this ring any bells?

Carolyn:

TVstudioA while back, I found a cozy that opened with a murder in a TV studio. I should have written it down by author or title, but I didn’t. Now, I’m looking for it again, but I’ve searched online for cozies that take place in TV studios and on your web site by theme and even through the A and B authors (because I remember that’s as far as I got in my original visit to your site.

As I mentioned above, if you think you may possibly know the answers to these questions, please post a comment.

Thank you!

I’d also be interested in the NOLA yarn shop mystery. I love Laura Child’s Scrapbooking Series set in NOLA, as well as her Tea Shop Series.

MG, ever since our daughter had a one-year job in NOLA, I’ve enjoyed reading about it. I hope someone comes up with this specific series, since I also enjoy the yarn shop theme.

Robin. Laura Childs has a scrapbook series set in New Orleans and always describes the most wonderful scenes there.

Motion for Madness by Kelly Rey takes place in a TV studio, but the deed is done in the Cable star’s office. Does that qualify?

I content-edited this book for Gemma Halliday Publishing, and it is available through Amazon and Smashwords.

I think the early music batteries are by James Gollin, which may be a pseudonym.

Instead of recorder, it’s a flute player, and no harpsichordist but there’s a lute player.

There’s a mystery series by James Gollin, set in Manhattan, that features Alan French, who is in the Antiqua Players.

The names of the books (not sure about the order) are:
    The Philomel Foundation
    The Verona Passamezzo
    Eliza’s Galiardo
    Broken Consort

Could the ‘tv studio’ mystery be “Caught Dead Handed” by Carol J. Perry? The story involves the murder of a local late night tv show host in Salem, MA.

Hilary- I guess this is off topic but I just read Caught Dead Handed this year and I could not put it down. I consider it one of my best cozy reads for 2016. I have the 2nd one in my TBR stack.

Carolyn- Killer Mousse by Melinda Wells might be the book and series you are looking for. A person dies on a tv cooking show after tasting some food.

The TV studio mystery could also be Until Death by Polly Whitney. The amateur detectives are a divorced couple who both work at the studio in NYC.

Last Writes by Laura Levine centers on a murder on the set of a sitcom the lead character is writing for. Great series anyway, really funny!

I agree with Katariina about Laura Levine books…so funny. Several years ago as I was watching “the Big Bang Theory”, Shelton went to a book store to hear a guest speaker. On the book shelves behind him were all these books displayed and most of them were Laura Levine. So, I went to the library and checked out all of them. Her characters are interesting and humorous. She was a writer on several T.V. programs. Just wish, there were more of her stories to read! I still check out books that I see on T.V. programs.

Molly MacRae and Jamie Marsman write cozies with a yarn shop them. However, I don’t know if they take place in NOLA. I love NOLA. I think it is Jamie whose theme is a haunted yarn shop. Both books excellent reads. Hope we find out who it is.

Does anyone recall an older, less-cozy series of 2 or 3 books with a former homeless young woman opening a private detective office in an old downtown building? Have been puzzling over this for several years and it is driving me crazy! Would like to reread the series.

She was a tough, independent loner-type. I believe she rode a bike when she wasn’t borrowing her friend’s car for stakeouts and visited Goodwill for clothing disguises. I remember one particular book she was pursued along beach and boardwalk and through an abandoned hotel.

I’d also be curious to know the yarn shop series referred to. The only one I know that seems remotely familiar is Monica Ferris’ Needlecraft series, but they’re not located in NOLA (otherwise they totally fit the description! Weekly classes & crafting circle, lots of alpaca & other yarns too.)

Margaret StashEmpress, you’re right, the description does sound remotely familiar to the Monica Ferris series, other than the location…
