Mike Befeler, Janet Bolin, Joyce Oroz, & Dorothy St. James … Four of the Newest Mystery Authors Added to the Cozy Mystery Site…

July 26, 2011

I am (again!) trying to post a few of the many mystery authors you all have recommended as belonging on the site. The four newest mystery author additions to the site are:

Mike Befeler   Befeler, with his Stanford Bachelor’s and his UCLA Master’s, writes the Paul Jacobson Geezer-Lit Mystery Series. This series has a unique sleuth, as he is an octogenarian.

Janet Bolin   Bolin writes the Threadville Mystery Series. This series will be of special interest to those of us who enjoy needleworking of all types: embroidery, crocheting, knitting, quilting, all sorts of arts, and/or crafts. The series takes place in a village which attracts many people with these interests. The sleuth is the owner of a high-tech embroidery shop.

Joyce Oroz   Oroz is a painter/author who writes the Josephine Stuart Mystery Series. Josephine, the sleuth, is a middle aged painter who is recently widowed.

Dorothy St. James  St. James pens the White House Gardener Mystery Series which, of course, takes place in Washington D C. The sleuth is an assistant gardener who has been hand-picked by the first lady.

The Mike Befeler books are really quite unique. Paul, the main character, looses his memory every night so he has to keep a diary to refresh his memory every morning. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 in the series & pleased that there is a 3rd coming in September.

I’m reading my second “geezer-lit” book right now and as mentioned above the character has to read his journal every morning to know what’s happening in his life due to his short term memory loss. But if he has sex the night before for some strange reason he is able to remember yesterday. It is definitely a new plot line and am finding the books very enjoyable and am also looking forward to the next one.

Sandy, thanks for telling us about Mike Befeler’s Geezer-Lit Mystery Series premise. They sound pretty “adult”… with an octogenarian, no less!

I’ve never suggested authors before and didn’t really know where I should do that. But I’ve got 2 for you.

Ann Littlewood – Writes the Zoo Mysteries (2 so far) I haven’t read these yet, but they look cozy from what I’ve seen.

    and

Betty Webb – Writes the Gunn Zoo Mysteries (2 so far) These are cozy. She also writes the Lena Jones series, but it looks like Lena’s a PI so…

I posted a link to your website on my Facebook page. I believe that it is possible to write a book without profanity. Recent sales, however, indicate that not many people are reading it !! LOL.

Please add me to the list of authors who write mysteries without explicit sex, profanity, extreme violence, psychobabble, and devil worship.

    Thanks
    Don

I agree with Don, it is possible to create an exciting mystery adventure story without gobs of blood and sex. Personally, I like to imagine the romance, with just a few suggestions to point the way. Josephine (my protagonist) is a mature woman who just might go ballistic if a friend is in trouble, but you probably won’t see the blood.
Thank you, Danna, for putting me on the Cozy list!

There are several great Geezer lit. authors out there. Just a couple Rita Lakin and Deb Baker. I’d place them in the cozy very tastefully written books. Sure there’s a smidge of romance but they lean more towards friends (who you have left at their ages) and family. Very funny with lessons to be learned by both forty something readers like myself and the older readers. Please let me know what you think.
