Laptop Frustration…

June 14, 2010

I just got back from a rather quick trip out to Washington, DC to visit my daughter. She is interning out there for ten weeks, so my husband and I decided to go out to our old stomping grounds and visit her.

In the past, whenever I left town, I would write a few entries and they would automatically post on the designated dates I had chosen. But this time I decided that I would just use my daughter’s laptop and write a few entries while I was out there. Since it was a very short trip (we left Thursday AM and returned Monday AM), I thought I would only write two entries while out there.

Yikes! Her laptop has a very sensitive keyboard! Once I finished typing the rather short entry from June 12, I decided that I could simply not try to post another entry. That little, itty, bitty entry was quite a confusing, disorienting process for me.

I came back home knowing that I would never give up my mouse… I would absolutely never want to deal with a laptop again. I am simply the old dog-type of person who is happier when able to use out-dated technological gadgets that I am used to. Give me a clunky “normal” computer any time!

I have a travel netbook and I never leave home without my external mouse. I also have an external number pad as well, but I can leave that at home.

Dru, my daughter used to have a mouse that she would plug in when I needed it (on other trips), but this touch pad control thing-y was simply ridiculous.

(She actually prefers her control pad!)

It took me a long time to get used to a the touch pad. Now I’m pretty good at it, but I had to shut off all the special areas (that cause scrolling or page turning or any number of things I did NOT want happening.)

I do love my laptop. It just takes a while to make friends with it!

    Maria,
My daughter loves her laptop, also. But, as for making friends with her laptop… that’s not my idea of a friendship that is going to happen for me!

Not going to be happy with an ipad, then!

Just discovered your site, which I love. There isn’t anything like this in England, and I feel a little isolated as a cosy writer here. Much more of a community in the US. Keep going!

You are totally correct in saying that, Lesley! It just takes me too long to learn how to do the easiest of new technological things.

It is definitely an acquired taste, is a laptop. But when you get used to it, it is quite lovely. I thought I would never get used to mine but, like Maria, I have gotten rather good at it. Such a convenience. It is hard to move that big ole clunker of a desktop to the sunroom for a quick browse.

    Hi Anne,

That is true… there is no moving involved with a desktop computer, and it would be nice to move from room to room. If I could do that, I wouldn’t have to put up my seasonal doo-dads on my computer desk shelves to remind me what season we are supposed to be in! (Although in San Antonio, the seasons are hot, hotter, and hottest!)

What I love best about the laptop is that I can sit with it while watching TV or just use it in my easy chair. Using the PC at the desk feels a lot like work. Writing or emailing from the easy chair…well worth it!

I think that is also why people like Kindles. Portable. You can take them anywhere you can take a book.

I just found your site and I really like it! I love reading cozy mysteries. Keep up the good work!

I have used both desktop and laptop computers, and I prefer a desktop because it feels more dependable and less delicate than a laptop. Unfortunately, I’m stuck with a laptop right now. Ugh!

Thanks, Laura, for the kind words about the site.

I know what you mean… “delicate” is exactly the right word. If I so much as touched that “mouse/keyboard pad” circular thing, I would lose my place on the screen and have to go searching for it!
