If You’re Having a Not-So-Good Day, This Will Surely Make You Smile…

November 23, 2013

You know how the internet is… You look for one specific thing, and that leads you to a second somewhat related thing, which in turn takes you to a third subject, which really isn’t at all related to the first item. You always seem to go from point 1 to destination Z. No rhyme or reason to it, which would be why it’s called “surfing” >>> although it may be called something else these days.

This leads me to a YouTube clip that I just watched from an old television show called “I’ve Got a Secret”. Anyway, before I post the clip, I will point out that it was a different time. The host had his perfunctory Winston cigarette hanging from his mouth while he greeted and played with the toddler. (So the next time you hear the “those were the days” you can remind yourself that not everything was better back then.)

Here is the I’ve Got a Secret clip off the YouTube site:

    Danna.
I know what you mean about searching for one specific item and the search engine gives you more than you ask for. Sometimes you get so confused from the listings provided that you forget what you were looking for. But this time you found a winner. Loved watching that segment. Thank you for sharing it.

Sheila, this search actually began as a search for the mystery book author Stuart Palmer. From there I was side-tracked to Betsy Palmer, which then took me to I’ve Got a Secret, which took me to this little boy and his brother. Absolutely nothing to do with Hildegarde Withers’ author!

I watched “I’ve Got a Secret” and “What’s My line” with my parents. If it wasn’t for computers we wouldn’t be able to view these shows and on the negative we’re all wired up! (Hope they don’t allow cell phone usage on planes or I’ll go nuts!) Thanks for the clip.

Cyn, my husband told me that the Flight Attendants’ association is trying to stop the FCC from OK-ing the cell phones in the skies. They say the phones will cause the Friendly Skies to not be so friendly, with people getting into fights.

Oh, this has me tied up in goo-goo knots, for sure. Such nice children and such a good, sweet baby. He wasn’t scared a bit. I hear you about the smoking. They just didn’t know any better. My father always smoked around us and, as a young child, I found it comforting and fascinating. I remember carefully unwrapping his old cigarette butts. On the rare occasions when my mother wasn’t home at bedtime, he would come up to kiss us good night after the light was off and I would know where he was by the glow of his cigarette. Thanks for the memories, I will have to look up more such youtube clips. By the way, how is your mother getting along?

Marion, I’m glad you were reminded of your happy times of childhood. I have a picture of me (at around age five) making a puzzle with my dad, who had a cigarette dangling from his mouth.

As for my mother, I hear from the agency that is taking care of her about once a week. She is now getting on the phone and ordering things that she absolutely does not need. Also, even though I have put her phone number on both the national and the Colorado DO NOT CALL lists, unscrupulous marketers are calling the house and selling her things. One of the things she has ordered that stands out is fast-speed internet connection. (She doesn’t own a computer!)

Good memories for you too. They just didn’t think about the hazards of second’hand smoke. I suspect a lot of people still don’t who would never dream of hurting their children on purpose. I’m sure our fathers didn’t . One nasty memory with smoking. My father was working in the yard and I came running down the yard. You guessed it. My bare foot found a hot discarded cigarette. Lord, I still remember the pain. The butt was in the grass. I don’t know if he dropped it or put it down or what. Lord, your mother on the phone. Twas ever thus. There seems to be ways of getting around the ‘don’t call’ lists. Any chance of getting a Power of Attorney for her where you or your sister or an attorney would control her finances? It wouldn’t keep her off the phone but maybe she wouldn’t lose money. My heart goes out to you.

Marion, my sister suggested that we do that. I am a little hesitant because my mother is not going to take that well. She is “with it” enough that I know she would definitely fight this decision in court. (Just not “with it” enough that you need a computer to use a high-speed internet connection and also to not pay $200. a month for fish oil capsules!)

I really loved it. Thanks for posting it. I laughed long and hard, all alone, laughing like crazy in my study. I almost went and got my husband to come and listen to it but I was just too lazy. Really funny. I’d never before heard the theatrical expression “catching flies.” Good to know.

Susan, I had my husband watch it when he showed me how to put the clip on the page. When I saw him laugh, I knew it would make others laugh as well.

Gee, when I watched the clip everyone looked so much younger than how they looked to me as a child watching the show. As a child, I thought Bill Cullen was really old and now I realize that he was fairly young when he did the show. It is the same for the rest of the panel.

I’ve watched several more of these on youtube this week. They’re pretty funny. On one, Betsy Palmer pops a zipper in her dress and rest of the panel has to stop and do needed repairs!

Marion, I haven’t seen that I’ve Got a Secret yet, but I did see the one where Jane Meadows was pregnant and they sent her into the isolation booth so that they could do a segment (without her) about a 15 year old boy who had 10 snakes hidden on his body. Apparently back then, pregnancy couldn’t withstand “shocks” like that!

We’ve come a long way, Baby!

Just about the last straw for me is when he gives him the lollipop and the stick breaks, lol! And then the baby offers it to the panel. Wiping the desk dry is just great! I wonder how damp it actually was or if he was going for one more laugh. I wish I could wink like Betsy could. I wonder what those boys are doing now. I have a feeling that Timothy is still a charm boy.

Marion, as entertaining as Gary Moore was, I’m guessing he was hamming it up for the camera.

I am going to have to agree with you about that little Timothy. He was indeed a “charm boy.”
