Well, I wondered why CBS showed two “Jesse Stone” movies in the wrong sequence. The episode that I thought was the first episode actually aired a week after the second episode. Luckily, I was way behind in watching my recorded shows, so I was able to watch them in the sequence I thought they should be in. When I went online to investigate I found that CBS has been airing these shows since ’05… and I can only wonder how I missed them!
Jesse Stone is an ex-Los Angeles Police Department officer who is transplanting himself to Massachusetts…. after being fired for what appears to be a life of very hard drinking. This is where I started the show, and I really enjoyed it. (But, I could be totally wrong, since I haven’t seen the actual first episode…. which aired in February of ’05.)
There are four movies in the series… Tom Selleck (yes, Tom Selleck aka Magnum, P. I.) stars as Jesse Stone, and he is very convincing as a fiftyish ex-LAPD, with a penchant for Scotch. He takes on the job of chief of police, after interviewing for the job smelling “like a brewery”…. He corrects that…. It wasn’t beer, it was Scotch! The “feeling” of Jesse Stone is… Spenser for Hire. And, it is no small wonder since both Jesse and Spenser are written by Robert B. Parker.
What I liked about the show is the promise of some great characters. Jesse and Boomer (his Bloodhound) are a wonderful example of true friendship… never judgemental, always loving. Also, something I really liked is that this was the first time I have seen a movie with the leading man questioning the age difference between himself, a fiftyish man, and a prospective girlfriend, a thirtyish woman. Bravo to them for actually being aware of the “problem.” (Although I am guessing that most men don’t see that as a problem!)
On the negative side, though, is why CBS showed these movies so spaced out in time….
Stone Cold… February ’05
Night Passage… January ’06
Death in Paradise… April ’06
Sea Change… May ’07
Since I watch very little actual television (relying on mostly old movies and BBC-type series), I can understand how I could have missed these movies. But, I have programmed “Jesse Stone” on my DVR, and will watch for the movies to be shown again. If I see that they are going to be airing them, I will definitely post the times and dates in my blog!
(Please let me know if you happened to see any of the four Jesse Stone movies… Click on Comment below… I would love to know if anyone else saw them… and if so, I wonder if they like them as much as I did…)
PS>>>> Thin Ice just aired in 2009!
No Remorse will air in May of 2010.
Lonnie Cruse says
Thanks for the head’s up. My hubby is a huge Selleck fan, so we’ll have to rent this show and watch it. I’m assuming it’s on DVD? Lonnie
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Yes, Lonnie… well at least two of them are on DVD:
Jesse Stone: Night Passage
Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise
David says
Stone Cold is also on DVD, I found it at Kmart for $9.99, you should check a Kmart that’s near you. Love these movies, just wish it was a weekly thing.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks for the info, David. I had no idea that Kmart carried these!
David Swain says
I also saw the Jesse Stone “Stone Cold” at Longs Drugs in Bellflower for $9.99. They had 4 in the rack. I’m sure other Longs Drugs have it too
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks, again, David. I wish we had Kmarts and Longs Drugs out here!
Michele says
I love these movies. I’ve read the books and rumor has it that a 5th Jesse Stone is in the works. It’s called Thin Ice. I love all things Selleck. Even going as far as to watch Las Vegas on NBC to see him.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Michele, What great news for Selleck and Stone fans! I sure hope they are making the fifth Jesse Stone movie… Please let us know if you hear anything more… (I miss my old mystery shows on TV!!! I am even starting to watch Murder, She Wrote reruns… or should I say reruns of reruns of reruns…)
Dale says
Love them all, always watching for a new one. My husband and I are Selleck fans too and have gone back to watching Vegas just to see him.
By the way you have “Stranger In Paradise” listed as a Sunny Randall book, it’s a Jesse Stone book.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, Dale, for the correction. I just changed it to the right list.
Thanks, again…….
Sally says
Yes, I saw two of the Jesse Stone movies and I loved them. But then how could I not, I love Tom Selleck. I didn’t know that there were four of them. Hope to see all of them.
Great info! Thanks, Sally
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Hi Sally,
And, they just aired one more: Thin Ice is the fifth that I know of…
Sa'vant says
I am so thrilled that there are so many Tom Selleck fans coming out in droves. Everyone in my family has been Tom’s fans for years, even before Magnum P.I. I had even forgotten that he’d had a long time relationship with Mimi Rogers(formerly married to Tom Cruise)and thought she was spot on as Rita Fiore in Stone Cold. I have five of the Jesse Stone DVDs.Stone Cold,Night Passage,Death in Paradise,Sea Change, and Thin Ice. Now,imagine how ignorant I felt when I thought that Night Passage was the first, but it isn’t-it’s a prequel to Stone Cold. The part in the beginning of Night Passage where Jessie is standing, staring at the water, intoxicated, is supposed to be him reflecting on events already played out. I focused too much on the dogs and missed the tiny detail of his demeanor when the police inquired as to why he was standing out there all alone, at night,by the crashing waves. If you’d like,if you’ve not already gotten your hands on these five-I can send you the link and you can download them-as long as they are still active. Can not wait for No Remorse and everything else after,as I do hope this series continues to satisfy.

Looks like Tom Selleck has lots of fans!
I finally was able to track down all of the Jesse Stone movies.
I hope you don’t have to wait too long for No Remorse!
Dorothy says
And I am pleased to tell you there will be another one after No Remorse because they are filming it now, here in Nova Scotia. About 10 days ago they were filming at a garage a couple of blocks away. Last Thursday night they had the street next to mine blocked off for filming. And Monday afternoon they were shooting by the government wharf, but I didn’t see Tom Selleck. Too bad, I really enjoy his work and would love to have seen him in action, so to speak…
Danna - cozy mystery list says
How neat is that! It does sound like it is causing a little bit of a hassle, though. Thanks for telling us about the new movie…
Mary W. says
Watched all but Thin Ice. Has not aired here yet.
I have found DVD’s in Safeway, and other grocery stores, along with those other mentioned.
Hooked on the series. T. Selleck is great.
Mary W. says
Tom Selleck is great. Great series….
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Hi Mary,
You are amongst many of us who enjoy Tom Selleck in these Jesse Stone movies. I sure hope that they continue to produce them!
Petie says
Saw “Thin Ice” last night, and always enjoy Tom Selleck. As I’ve said before, if there was ever a movie made for TV or just a movie based on the ‘CAT WHO ….’ books, Tom Selleck would be a perfect Jim Qwilleran!
Anne says
OOOOHHH, great idea…hope Hollywood is listening…I would never have thought that but now that the idea is in my head I will picture Tom Selleck as Jim Qwilleran from here on out…
Cathy says
My husband picked up ‘Stone Cold’ for $5.00 and added it to my Christmas gifts this year (09). We fell in love with the movie and the characters. The good guys were terrific and the bad guys were easy to hate. I went to Amazon the next day and ordered four more in the series. Watched Night Passage last night (1-4-10) and wish we’d seen this one first. The only one I haven’t seen for sale is ‘No Remorse’ so we’re looking forward to the release. Usually I don’t trust the comments on the DVD cover but the one on ‘Stone Cold’ was spot-on when it said “Tom Selleck is perfect!”. I wish I could tell him myself. We’re glad to have them on DVD because these are definitely ones we’ll watch again and again. I hope someone knows if there will be more to come.
Joseph says
Tom Selleck”s efforts should not be left languishing. Let’s start a campaign to get No Remorse aired as soon as possible with “Split Image’ to follow soon thereafter. Is anyone with me? Where do we send our emails?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joseph,
I’m guessing that a lot of people are behind you on this one! I do hope that they continue to air the Jesse Stone movies…
Trish says
I have seen all 5 of the Jesse Stone movies, and they are all great. I think they were so well done, that when I read the books not yet in movie format, it’s easy to “see” Tom Selleck playing the role in my mind.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
My husband and I just re-watched one of the Jesse Stone movies, and are really looking forward to the release of the next one: No Remorse.
randy says
I have all six movies. They are great. I really hope the rumor of a seventh movie is correct. I can’t wait for it to come out.
Selleck only gets better.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I hope you’re right, Randy. I didn’t know there was a rumor about a new Jesse Stone movie coming out. I’ll be watching for it…

I have just been at Robert B Parker’s website and blog. I am so sorry to say that on his website, his family announced Robert Parker has passed away.
In checking further, it appears he had a heart attack in January 2010 while working at his desk. It saddens me to lose such a wonderful writer. I am glad he published so many books, and there is still one more moving through the publisher for release in October 2010.
Anyway, he was negotiating upcoming Spencer for Hire remake and he does talk about the Jesse Stone/Tom Selleck experiences. Read about it here at his blog: http://robertbparker.typepad.com/
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks, Mary. I sure hope that Tom Selleck continues to produce new Jesse Stone movies…
