Regina, how neat is this! Today’s Friday, so you must be enjoying your grandson’s wedding. Best wishes to the happy couple, and the very lucky grandmother!

Happy 4th to all the cozy readers. I’m reading the Ellery Adams new book Pies and Prejudice on my nook. It is quite enjoyable.

Anyone with I-Pad can download books for free with the Classically free book app. I have been reading E. Phillip Oppenheim and others- and enjoying them immensely!

I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am to find blog/ website! Thank you and all those who comment and make suggestions.
Does anyone else buy from ABE books, ER Hamilton or Daedalus? I live miles from a good bookstore- even from a library!

Because I like to read series in order and sometimes the early books in a series are out of print, I have used Abebooks to find those older books. On the whole, I have had good luck with them.

Kay & Judith, I should correct myself on this. I did buy two books from Alibris many years ago. Both books were written by Tom Holt (son of Hazel Holt) and were the sequels to E. F. Benson‘s Lucia series. (That was way before Amazon sold third-party books.)

Why don’t you have Mary Stewart listed on your cozy mystery list? She wrote some great books – Airs Above the Ground, The Gabriel Hounds, The Moonspinners, and more.

I haven’t read a Mary Stewart book for years. I am glad Marilyn mentioned this author. Sometimes I forget about some of the older writers.

How about Virginia Holt, Linda C? It’s been years since I read any of her mysteries…

I have always loved Virginia Holt, Danna, as well as Catherine Cookson. There are so many older mystery writers, very good mystery writers that I’ll bet a lot of the younger people who post in this forum don’t know about. Maybe that could be an idea for a future subject. I’ll bet a lot of these people would like to know who some of these really good older writers are.
For quite a while now a lot of us have had complaints about some of the subject matter that take up a lot of space in some of these newer type mysteries. Some people might find some of these older writers to be a bit refreshing to read.
There sure are a lot of older mystery writers who indeed wrote mysteries.

My goodness, Linda, I remember the old Victoria Holt mysteries from years and years ago. I think I actually read Holt’s books before venturing on to Agatha Christie.

I love old Victoria Holt mysteries – “The Secret Woman” was always my favorite. And don’t forget Phyllis Whitney, who wrote gothics, romantic suspense and juvenile suspense. While Victoria Holt mysteries are just starting to creep back into print and e-book format, I’m still waiting on some Phyllis Whitney revivals.

Kay, I did something a little funny this week concerning the gothic romances. In another reply that I had today I wrote about a wonderful book store that is in a town near mine. While I was there looking for a particular book I saw that this store was having a grab bag type clearance sale. I got a bag of books for a dollar, and since I am an old lady (67) I got the senior citizen rate as well!! (Sometimes being an old lady is an advantage.) Some bags were marked R for romance books while other bags were marked M for men’s books. I picked up 4 bags of the R bags. I could hardly wait to get home to open the bags, thinking that I was going to have a windfall of books to save for the winter months, I found all of the books were gothic romances!! I just don’t care for this type book. What a disappointment!!
A lot of times a lot of us, myself very well included, make no bones about what we like or what we don’t like to read. But I can remember back to when, and sometimes even in this day and age, when certain books were banned. So I say let people read what they want to. I am only going to read what I want to. I hate censorship! I want to be able to read what I want to read when I want to read it!!
There is nothing WRONG with reading the gothic romances. Evidently these books have a large number of people who do like these books. But I myself just don’t care for this type reading.
No one really lost anything by me buying these books, though. I just took all of the romances to the library so other people can read them. I am sure someone will!

At least, Linda, the “R” didn’t stand for the movie “R” rating!

Danna, I guess earlier this evening I must have had another Senior Moment big time!! The author is “Victoria ” Holt, not Virginia. There might be a Virgina Holt but the one I thought you were referring to is Victoria. Great writer, great story teller. Loved her books. One of the all time classics for me.

Hey Linda- I read almost everything- including encyclopedias, cereal boxes, comic books, Spanish, etc- except Herman Melville! One of my longtime favorites is Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters. I just read the new Victoria Thompson- Murder on 5th Avenue and Barbara Allen- Antiques Disposal. The problem is that I read faster than my favorite authors write! I bet a lot of us have this problem?

Kay, I used to read quicker than my favorite authors could write, but now they have all out-distanced me!
